The path continues through the hilly landscape of Gascony , through agricultural areas via Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon to Condom . The route D41 –D931 leads to Condom as a road connection .

history

In a document from 1088, the Viscount de Lomagne signed an area in the Firmacon forest to the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille after a pilgrim had settled there. It is often concluded that it must have been a pilgrim to St. James, but the document says nothing about this. Already at this time a place seems to have settled around the hermitage. The construction of a priory church began around 1090. In 1317 the Curia Cardinal Arnauld d'Aux, who came from this area, acquired the Benedictine priory in order to convert it into a secular collegiate monastery; 14 canons should reside in it.

During the Huguenot Wars , the monastery was attacked and damaged by Protestants. It was dissolved at the time of the French Revolution . The archives and the rood screen were burned, the residents of the village took over the church as a parish church.

Attractions

  • By 1320, in just three years, the Saint-Pierre collegiate church was built and work on a cloister began. The cardinal, who died a year later and who had provided a wealth of treasures and relics , was buried in his monastery. The single-nave Gothic church interior has quite unusual dimensions: with a width of only 9 meters, it is 36 meters long and the pointed arches reach a height of 15 meters. The high windows on the south side and in the polygonal choir show rich glass paintings. Originally the church was completely painted, but these paintings were removed during a restoration in the 19th century. On the north side there is a large cloister with eight arcade arches on each side. The canons could enter the church directly from there through a richly decorated portal. To the west of this is the cloister with the 33-meter-high square bell tower.
  • The so-called “Kardinalsturm” northeast of the choir is even higher. The octagonal tower consists of three halls arranged one above the other. The lower one served as a sacristy , at the time it was built, possibly also as a personal office for Cardinal Arnaud. The two floors above housed the chapter house and the archive. At the top there is a viewing level with large open windows on seven of the eight sides. The connection is made by an external spiral staircase. The rich wall paintings from the 14th century can be found in the lower floor in particular. They show coats of arms, representations of the twelve apostles, prophets, Christ, Mary and various martyrs. The vault is painted with angel figures. The style of the paintings shows Romanesque and Italian influences.
  • The old Hôpital St-Jacques was later transformed into a Poor Clare Convention; today it is privately owned.
Château de Madirac
  • The Jardins de Coursiana , located opposite the monastery, are gardens. The arboretum contains around 700 rare trees and shrubs; Medicinal plants are shown in a garden.
  • A spring with a wash house is just outside the village.
  • Also just outside the village is the Château de Madirac with preserved parts (archway and corner tower) from the 16th century. It is in a sorry state.
  • There are several grottos and caves in the area.
