Homps ( Occitan : Oms ) is a French commune with 104 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region (until 2015 Midi-Pyrénées ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Condom and the municipal association Bastides de Lomagne, founded in 2012 .

The municipality of Homps is located in the area of ​​the former county of Fézensac , 32 kilometers northeast of Auch and about 50 kilometers northwest of Toulouse . The Arrats flows in a south-north direction through the 9.24 km² forest poor community area , into which the Orbe flows here. The eponymous village of Homps is located on a hill above a side valley of the Arrats at about 150 m above sea level. Town hall ( Mairie ) and church are located in the hamlet of Saint-Amand in the Arratstal at approx. 110 m above sea level. The community includes many small individual farms and hamlets. The largest are Tillac, Les Fagets, En Générau, Les Cardayres, La Bordeneuve, Le Bartas, Le Segnurau, Le Pébé, Marsan, Laouéret, Les Berdots, En Conté, Puissentut, Mounouat, Naumont, Guiraud, Muras and a Tuilerie . Near the hamlet of Tillac there is a chain of three small reservoirs that are used for fish farming and for irrigation of the arable land. Homps is bounded by the neighboring communities Estramiac in the north, Solomiac in the east, Monfort in the south and south-west and Bivès in the north-west.

Place name

Homps ( Oms in Occitan ) is derived from the Latin ulmus for elm .

In 1831 the highest number of inhabitants in the municipality of Homps was registered with 426 residents.

  • From the former castle ( Château de Homps ), built on a mountain spur at the end of the 13th century, abandoned as a residence in the 16th century and used as a quarry after the French Revolution, only the castle tower, which last served as a dovecote, is preserved. Economy and Infrastructure

In the south of the community there are two quarries in operation that use the limestone to produce aggregates for the construction industry. The approximately six hectares of vineyards in Homps are part of the Côtes de Gascogne wine-growing region . There are also 18 farms in the municipality of Homps (grain and feed cultivation).

Homps is located away from the major transport axes. The D 928 trunk road runs from Montauban to the RN 124 near Auch to the east of the municipality . The train station in the commune of Gimont, 23 kilometers south, is on the railway line from Saint-Agne to Auch.
