Mouchan ( Gaskognisch Moishan ) is a French commune with 406 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region (until 2015 Midi-Pyrénées ); it belongs to the Arrondissement Condom and the commune association La Ténarèze . The residents call themselves Mouchanais / Mouchanais .

geography

Mouchan is located around 37 kilometers northwest of Auch in the north of the Gers department. The community consists of numerous scattered settlements and individual farmsteads. There are numerous vineyards.

Neighboring municipalities are Beaumont and Larressingle in the north, Cassaigne in the northeast, Valence-sur-Baïse in the east, Mansencôme in the southeast, Gondrin in the southwest and west and Lauraët in the northwest.

history

The area was already settled in Gallo-Roman times. The monastery, which was built in the Middle Ages, was abandoned in 1572 after being pillaged by Huguenots. In the Middle Ages, Mouchan was in the county of Vic-Fezensac within the Armagnac region in the historic Gascony region and shared its fate. Mouchan was part of the District Condom from 1793 to 1801. Mouchan has been assigned to the Condom arrondissement since 1801 and belonged to the Condom canton from 1793 to 2015 .
