Waters

L'Isle-Bouzon is located in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Arrats , one of its left tributaries, forms the natural border with the neighboring municipality of Gramont to the east. The Auroue , another left tributary of the Garonne, crosses the territory of the municipality from south to north.

history

Several traces of settlement in Gallo-Roman times have come to light over the centuries.

Around the middle of the 11th century, a settlement was founded on a bend in one of the Auroue in what is now the hamlet of Corné in what is now the municipality. It was probably abandoned due to a flood between 1250 and 1260. The population moved to a higher place on the edge of the limestone plateau above the Auroue valley. The Castelnau was founded and quickly divided into plots. A Castelnau ( German  Neuburg , Occitan castèl nòu , in Vulgar Latin castellum novum ) is a village or town that was founded near a castle in the Middle Ages . The village also had a city wall. It belongs to the Vicomté of Lomagne. From the 16th century, the Castelnau seems to have gradually depopulated in favor of the formation of hamlets in the area.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 1,005 at the beginning of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to its lowest level of 230 inhabitants, with temporary recovery phases, before it stabilized at a level of around 245 inhabitants.

The church, which was built in the 16th century, saw the construction of the west facade with a stair tower, an elevation of the side walls and the erection of the barrel vault in the nave in the 19th century . The nave is closed off by a polygonal apse .

Chapel in the hamlet of Landiran

A chapel was built around 1884 in the hamlet of Landiran on the border with the neighboring municipality of Lectoure to the west . Its floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross and consists of a nave. The outer walls of works and quarry stone from limestone are partially plastered. The roof is covered with hollow tiles.

Castle ruins

As the last remnant of the castle of the Galard de Magnas family, a tower has three dismantled wall sides with a likewise dismantled watch tower on the southwest corner. This belonged to a protruding part of the defense system. The castle, built in the 12th and 13th centuries, was otherwise completely destroyed. The remains of the tower have been inscribed as a Monument historique since January 11, 1951 .

Remains of the city fortifications

The Charte de coutumes of 1266, which regulated the relationship between the seigneur and his subjects, documents the existence of a city fortification at that time, several sections of which have been preserved today. The charter specifically mentioned a gatekeeper. At the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century, the fortifications were revised, as can be seen from the crowd watchtower of the earlier castle on the northeastern edge of the village, which was an integral part of the defensive system. The moat on the east side of the village was filled in on an unknown date.

Castle ruins

Its origins go back to the 13th century. The house, which is flanked by three towers and the forecourt surrounded by a wall, was completely rebuilt in the 18th century. The rudiments of the castle and the terrace laid out in the 18th century have been inscribed as Monument historique since September 22, 1995 .
