Fourcès is a municipality with 260 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in southwest France near Castelnau-d'Auzan . It belongs to the Département Gers and the Canton of Montréal and is located in the Occitanie region . The municipality belongs to the canton of Armagnac-Ténarèze (until 2015 canton of Montréal ).

Fourcès has been named one of the most beautiful villages in France by the association Les plus beaux villages de France .

geography

Fourcès is located in the Auzoue Valley , at an altitude between 64 and 180 meters above sea level. The municipality covers 23.72 km².

The Foundation Association des plus beaux villages points out that Fourcès is the only bastide in the Gers department that is not laid out like a chessboard, but rather concentrically.

history

Fourcès is already mentioned in a charter from 1068 as a fortified place and as one of the most important fiefs of Gascony . The medieval city was fiercely contested between France and England until the 15th century . Originally laid out as Castelnau ( castellum novum ) (equipped with a castle and surrounded by a circular wall), Fourcès was converted into a bastide in the 13th century.
