Castelnau-d'Auzan is a village and a former French commune with the last 1047 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013) in the Gers department in the Occitania region (until 2015: Midi-Pyrénées ). It belonged to the Arrondissement of Condom and the Canton of Montréal . The inhabitants call themselves Auzanais.

With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of Castelnau-d'Auzan and Labarrère were merged into a Commune nouvelle with the name Castelnau d'Auzan Labarrère . Only Labarrère was granted the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Castelnau-d'Auzan.

geography

The village is located on the Gélise river, 26 kilometers east of the town of Condom (sometimes called Condom-en-Armagnac) in Gascony . It is on the edge of vast forests. The village lies on the watershed between the Gélise and Izaute rivers on the site of an old castle ( castrum ). Castelnau-d'Auzan is surrounded by vineyards from the Côtes de Gascogne , and there are small settlements on the sloping hills around it. The nearest train stations are: Mont-de-Marsan (55 kilometers), Agen (65 kilometers) and Auch (70 kilometers). The closest airports can be considered Toulouse (140 kilometers), Bordeaux (150 kilometers) and Pau (100 kilometers). Due to its geographical location, the Atlantic coast on the one hand and the ski areas of southern France on the other are only 145 km away.

history

The name Castelnau-d'Auzan basically means new castle in the land of Éauzan . From the castle itself there are still remains of walls here and there in the village. The oldest street in Castelnau, the “Rue du Canon”, is located near the '' Place de la Mairie '' with the town hall. It dates from the 15th century.

Traditional festivals

Attractions

The landscape is ideal for excursions on foot or by bike. Golf can be played at the de Guinlet golf course a few minutes from the village. Because of its charming landscape, the Gers is sometimes also called the Tuscany of France . Summers are long and warm while winters are short and mild. This climate has been a strong attraction for visitors for centuries. In the area you can find several castles, medieval walled places and places of religious importance on the Way of St. James and the Via Podiensis .

Personalities

  • Joseph-Nicolas Barbeau Barran was a member of the National Assembly and the Chambre des Cent-Jours , born in Castelnau-d'Auzan in 1761 and died in Switzerland in 1816. At the trial of Louis XVI. he voted for the king's guilt and for the death penalty. He became president of the Jacobin Club and opponent of Robespierre . During the second restoration in 1816 he was sentenced to exile for the murder of the king and withdrew to Switzerland.
  • General Henri de Mibielle, born in Castelnau-d'Auzan in 1814, died in 1910, his tomb is in the Béziey cemetery.
