Cadeilhan is a French commune with 139 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Condom arrondissement and the canton of Fleurance-Lomagne (until 2015: canton of Saint-Clar ).

The inhabitants are called Cadeilhanais and Cadeilhanaises .

geography

Cadeilhan is located about 35 kilometers southeast of Condom in the historic province of Armagnac in Lomagne on the northeastern edge of the department.

Cadeilhan lies in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Rivière de l'Auroue, a tributary of the Garonne, forms the natural border with the western neighboring municipality of Brugnens. In addition, the Ruisseau du Gélon, a tributary of the Arrats , irrigates the territory of the municipality along with its tributary, the Ruisseau de Saudroue.

history

The area was inhabited at least in Gallo-Roman times , as evidenced by the remains of Villa La Tasque from the first to third and fifth centuries. The current name of the community comes from the Latin proper name Catilius , who owned an estate. Near the village there is a round tower from the 16th century, a remnant of the castle of the lords de Preyssac family.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of around 380 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to its lowest level of 100 inhabitants by the 1990s, with intermittent recovery phases, before a phase of growth began. which continues to this day.
