The commune of Eauze is located in the French region of Occitania in the Gers department . The small town with 3918 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is considered the capital of Armagnac . The municipality belongs to the canton of Armagnac-Ténarèze . Eauze was the capital of the canton of Eauze until 2015 .

The long-distance hiking trail GR 65 leads through the village , which largely follows the historical course of the French Way of St. James, Via Podiensis .

history

Eauze can look back on more than 2000 years of history. The name Eauze developed from Elusa, the main seat of the Elusati tribe, who resisted Julius Caesar's troops for the longest while advancing into Gaul . After the successful Roman conquest , Eauze becomes the capital of Novempopulana , one of the three Roman provinces into which the Gallic Aquitania was divided. In the 5th century, Eauze becomes one of the first bishoprics but is then destroyed in the troubled times of the early Middle Ages . In 950 a monastery was founded by the Cluny Abbey in Eauze. In 1352 Eauze lost its rank as archdiocese to the city of Auch . During the wars of religion , Eauze is owned by the Protestant and the Catholic side.

Saint-Luperc Cathedral

• The cathedral of Saint Luperc . It was built in 1521 by John Marre , Bishop of Condom . Bricks from the Gallo-Roman ruins were used for its construction.
