Saint-Puy ( Gaskognisch Sempoi ) is a French commune with 600 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the Arrondissement Condom and the municipality of Ténarèze . Its inhabitants call themselves Saint Pouyards / Saint Pouyardes .
geography
Saint-Puy is located on a hill about 39 kilometers northwest of the city Auch in the north of the Gers department. The community consists of the village of Saint-Puy, several hamlets and numerous individual farms. In terms of traffic, the municipality is located at the intersection of the D42 and the D654 a few kilometers east of the RD930 and a few kilometers west of the N21 .
history
Settlement remains from the Gallo-Roman period are evidence of early settlement. There was a castle in Saint-Puy as early as the 10th century. A village church is first mentioned in 1245. The place itself arose between 1270 and 1272 as a bastide and was founded by the Counts of Armagnac. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the county of Pays de Gaure, which was part of the province of Gascony. The community belonged to the District Condom from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Saint-Puy was the capital of the canton of Saint-Puy from 1793 to 1801 and part of the canton of Valence-sur-Baïse from 1801 to 2015 . The parish has been assigned to the Condom arrondissement since 1801. In 1851 part of the parish split off and became the parish of Larroque-Saint-Sernin.
