Sarrant is a French commune in the Gers department in the Occitanie region with 368 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). It is assigned to the canton of Mauvezin (until 2015 canton of Mauvezin ) and the Arrondissement Condom .

The village has been classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France ( Most Beautiful Villages in France ) since 1999 .

geography

The municipality is located in the historic province of Aquitaine - more precisely in Gascon - even more precisely in Lomagne , around 47 kilometers west-northwest of Toulouse and is crossed by the Gimone River and its tributary Sarrampion . The medieval town designed as a bastide is also located on the left bank of the Sarrampion .

history

Ancient and Middle Ages

Sarrant followed an ancient settlement that was on the Roman road from Toulouse to Lectoure and stretched along the right bank of the Sarrampion. In the Tabula Peutingeriana it is registered as Sarrali . The ancient roots of the place were confirmed in 2004 by the discovery of a Roman sarcophagus , which was covered with Tegula bricks and must have been made before the 4th century.

In the Middle Ages , Sarrant grew in a circle around the church dedicated to St. Vincent von Agen († around 290) was consecrated. A Charter of 1265, which in 1307 by French King Philip the Fair was confirmed, notes that it is in the Bastide Sarrant a "royal castle", which from a so-called consulate is managed and no local government devotes his may. In the 15th century there were three castles and palaces in the municipality. Savailhan Castle belonged to the Mauléon family. Their representative Denis de Mauléon was a close follower of Henri de Navarre , who later became King Henry IV. Today, nothing can be seen of the medieval Reychac Castle. It consisted of a rectangular, one-story hall flanked by a round tower. From this point of view Baron Jean-Jacques de Reychac could see the two valleys belonging to him. Finally, the Cédailh Castle, located near the village, was inhabited by Jean de Cédailh , a citizen and trader from Beaumont-de-Lomagne .

Modern times

In the 16th century, Sarrant was a prosperous parish with around 2,000 inhabitants, 400 of whom lived within the city walls. The population lived mainly from growing grain, viticulture and sheep breeding. The craft was dominated by weavers who worked wool and flax. During the Huguenot Wars , Sarrant was attacked and looted several times. In 1590 the city was occupied and the tower was damaged. Sarrant then had to buy himself out dearly; It was only thanks to the pledging of the church treasury that further pillage could be prevented. In the years 1628 and 1631 the bubonic plague claimed several hundred deaths in the community.

Noteworthy and probably unique in Gascony was the existence of a large brotherhood of musicians in the city. More than a hundred musicians, including violinists , hurdy-gurdy , psaltery and flute players , have been recorded for the years 1580 to 1640 . Many of them were blind. At that time, Sarrant's violin teachers trained many students from near and far, including young musicians from the province of Béarn , the Basque Country and the Spanish county of Rosselló .

During the turmoil of the revolution , Sarrant was also ravaged by looters and pillagers and was only able to protect itself from greater damage thanks to a spontaneously formed vigilante group. In 1813 the drawbridge was replaced by a stone bridge. A large opening had to be torn on the east side of the city wall to connect it to the modern road network. Between 1853 and 1863 the trenches were filled in and planted with plane trees.
