Puységur is a French commune with 75 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement Condom and the canton of Fleurance-Lomagne (until 2015: canton of Fleurance ).

The inhabitants are called Puységurois and Puységuroises .

geography

Puységur is about 14 kilometers north of Auch and about 28 kilometers southeast of Condom in the historic province of Armagnac .

Puységur is located in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Gers , one of its left tributaries, forms the natural border with the neighboring municipalities of Montestruc-sur-Gers and Sainte-Christie to the east. The Merdan crosses the northern area of ​​the municipality and flows into the Gers on the border with Montestruc-sur-Gers.

history

The name of the community is derived from the Latin podium securum ( German  safe hill ). The fortified village in earlier times was not far from the Roman road between today's municipality of Auch and Lectoure . An archaeologically important site from Roman and Merovingian times is located in the hamlet of la Ribère.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of around 285 in the mid-19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell with intermittent recovery phases until the 1960s to its lowest level of around 50 inhabitants before a brief period of growth which it raised to a level of around 75 inhabitants since the beginning of the 21st century.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Côme et Saint-Damien

It contains numerous items of equipment that are inscribed or classified as a monument historique of the objects:

  • an altarpiece and two statues of the altar from the 18th century. They were made for the de Montmorency family, who also owned the Puységur castle. The retable consists of pilasters of the Corinthian order and an arched cornice . The two statues represent martyrs and stand on the altar in front of the pilasters. The central painting is covered by a curtain.
  • an altarpiece in the south side chapel from the 17th century.
  • a gilded wood bas-relief from the 17th century depicting Christ crucified .
  • a bas-relief made of polychrome painted wood from the 17th or 18th century with the representation of Mary in the form of a medallion .
  • a stone choir screen from the 17th century.
  • Remains of the stately castle
