There are vineyards near Aurens that belong to the Ténarèze viticole cultivation area . The river Auvignon crosses the municipality in a northerly direction and in parts forms the western municipal boundary.

history
In the Middle Ages, Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon was located within the county of Condomois (also called Ténarèze), which was part of the historic Gascony landscape and shared its fate. From 1793 to 1801, both communities at that time belonged to the canton Laroumieu and the Condom district. Since 1801, the community has been assigned to the Condom arrondissement. Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon belonged to the canton of Condom from 1801 to 2015 , Abrin to the canton of Valence-sur-Baïse from 1801 to 1836 . The municipality was created in 1836 through the merging of the municipalities of Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon (1831: 340 inhabitants) and Abrin (1831: 46 inhabitants) to form today's municipality of Castelnau-sur-l'Auvignon. Because of partisan actions, the community was completely destroyed by the Wehrmacht on June 21, 1944. Several members of the Resistance and Spanish republicans fighting with them in French exile were killed by the Wehrmacht. Because of this, the Memorial to the Fallen is a memorial to the French and Spanish.
Population development
The development of the population is typical for a French rural community. After growth between 1793 and 1806, several waves of emigration followed since 1851. Between 1806 and the low point in 1990, the number of residents decreased by 69.4 percent.
