Maignaut-Tauzia ( Gascon : Manhaut e Tausiar) is a French municipality with 260 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Gers in the region Occitania (2015 Midi-Pyrénées ); it belongs to the Arrondissement Condom and the commune association La Ténarèze . The residents call themselves Maignautois / Maignautoises .
geography
Maignaut-Tauzia is about 8 kilometers southeast of Condom and 30 northwest of Auch in the Ténarèze landscape in the north of the Gers department. The community consists of the town of Maignaut, numerous scattered settlements and individual farmsteads. There are numerous vineyards that belong to the Ténarèze viticole region .
Neighboring municipalities are Condom and Béraut in the north, Saint-Orens-Pouy-Petit in the northeast, Saint-Puy in the east and southeast, Mont-d'Astarac in the south, Valence-sur-Baïse in the southwest and west, and Cassaigne in the northwest.
history
Excavations have uncovered the remains of an 11th century fortress. In the Middle Ages Maignaut-Tauzia was within the county Condomois (also called Ténarèze) which is a part of the historic landscape Gascogne was and shared their fate. Maignaut-Tauzia belonged to the District Condom from 1793 to 1801. Since 1801, the municipality has been assigned to the Condom arrondissement and belonged to the canton of Valence-sur-Baïse from 1793 to 2015 . The municipality was created in 1837 through the union of Maignaut (1831: 315 inhabitants) and Tauzia-Grand (1831: 133 inhabitants) to form today's municipality of Maignaut-Tauzia.
Population development
The development of the number of inhabitants is typical for a French rural community. After growth between 1793 and 1821, several waves of emigration followed since 1866. Between 1841 and the low point, the number of residents decreased by 68.7 percent. Since 1982 the population has increased significantly (also) due to the influx of British, German and Dutch people (1982–2016: + 66.9 percent).
