Lords of the Fallen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lords of the Fallen is an action role-playing game from the German development studio Deck13 . The game was released on October 28, 2014 by the Polish publisher CI Games for PC , Xbox One and PlayStation 4 . On February 9, 2017, versions for iOS and Android followed , some of which differ significantly from the other versions.

action

Long before the action of the game, the game world was ruled by the god Adyr, who was overthrown by three warriors, the so-called judges. The judges became demigods and have been punishing every sin ever since.

In Lords of the Fallen you play the convicted criminal Harkyn, who goes to a remote monastery in the mountains at the beginning of the game. The Rhogar invasion has already begun there. These are demonic warriors who serve a dark god. The player goes on a search for the human ruler Antanas. If you have found this, he gives you the order to finish off the remaining leaders of the Rhogar .

Gameplay

The game consists largely of fights in which skill and timing play an important role. There are various melee weapons and magic spells available to the player. Magic consumes mana , which slowly regenerates. For defeated opponents you get experience points, through which you can increase attributes and spells. This is done at save points, to which you will also be reset if the character dies. Experience gained but not spent remains on the spot in the event of death and can be collected again within a certain period of time. If you take too long, the lost experience points disappear.

Development history

Lords of the Fallen was first announced in 2013. Executive producer Tomasz Gop previously led the development of The Witcher 2 .

According to Tomasz Gop, Lords of the Fallen's development budget was 42 million Polish zloty , which is the equivalent of almost 10 million euros.

According to official information, the development of many games such as Tekken , Street Fighter and the Souls series ( Demon's Souls and Dark Souls ) was inspired.

The soundtrack of the game comes from the composer and musician Knut Avenstroup Haugen, who was also responsible for the background music for the MMORPG Age of Conan .

Reviews

The game, which received average to positive reviews, was often compared with Dark Souls and its successor Dark Souls II , which appeared in the same year as Lords of the Fallen .

According to the online test of the game magazine Computer Bild Spiele , Lords of the Fallen did not quite reach the level of Dark Souls II . The game is not programmed cleanly enough and there is a lack of variety of options; nevertheless it is demanding and captivating.

According to the GameStar , the game has a good atmosphere, but a poor story.

"Lords of the Fallen is a diamond in the rough that looks good, but could actually shine even more if it had been worked a few more months."

- Dimitry Halley : GameStar

The online portal 4Players describes Lords of the Fallen as a "rock-hard adventure in the tradition of Dark Souls". The author notes that some things like battle and “soul systems” are brazenly copied from Dark Souls , even if some things have been modified in a meaningful way.

Both GameStar and 4Players criticize the fact that a large part of the story is only transported via audiologs.

Sales figures

By the beginning of November 2014, more than 700,000 units of the game are said to have been delivered to dealers and 200,000 copies have been sold. The German trade magazine PC Games is rather critical of these numbers and describes the game as slow-moving. Conversely, half a million copies of the game were not sold.

According to a 2015 report by the website DSO-Gaming, the game sold 218,000 times on Steam , while 146,000 copies of the Xbox One version were sold.

By May 2015, the game should have sold more than 900,000 times worldwide.

successor

In late 2014, Lords of the Fallen 2 was announced. In March 2015, however, it was announced that Deck13 is no longer involved in the development. The Polish publisher CI Games accused the developer of improper performance of the contract. CI Games announced in 2018 that the New York- based studio Defiant, founded in 2015, would take over further development. However, the project was also withdrawn from this developer a year later. The game is now to be developed internally at CI Games. The studio has already ruled out a release in 2020.

In 2015, the development studio Deck13 announced a collaboration with the publisher Focus Home Interactive , with whom they published the science fiction setting action role-playing game The Surge in 2017 .
