Deck13 is a German game developer from Frankfurt am Main , who is best known for his adventures Ankh and Jack Keane as well as the action role-playing game Venetica .

history

When they founded Triggerlab in 2001, the company's managing directors had already been active in the computer games market for Artex Software, which had specialized in developing the first games for the Acorn RiscPC platform, for four years . The first title that the developer released in 2002 was the tactical shooter Stealth Combat . In the same year the name was changed to Deck13 Interactive based on the DM-Deck16 card from Unreal Tournament . The Artex Software label continues to be used for the publication of low-budget productions.

In 2005 the humorous adventure game Ankh was released , which is a remake of the game Ankh: The Tales of Mystery , published by Artex Software in 1998 . Since this title, which is set in ancient Egypt, sold very well and received numerous awards, the production of the sequel Ankh: Heart of Osiris , which appeared almost exactly a year later and reused elements of the previous game, soon began . In early August 2007, the adventure title Jack Keane was published, which is graphically and playfully similar to the Ankh series, but whose plot is set in England and India during the colonial days. Ankh: Battle of the Gods was also released in 2007. Five years after the first part was published, Jack Keane and the Eye of Fate came out . The role-playing game Venetica for the German publisher dtp entertainment was released in 2009. Haunted was released in 2011; after the bankruptcy of the publisher HMH , dtp entertainment took over the publication of the adventure.

In 2012 Deck13 took over some employees of the insolvent dtp entertainment who had previously worked for its development subsidiary Cranberry Production, and with them founded the new Deck13 Hamburg branch; under the new management, the Hanseatic city is now responsible for the TransOcean games. At the end of 2015, Deck13 established a third team in Berlin, which will initially support the main studio in Frankfurt with the development of the role-playing game The Surge .

In September 2016, Florian Stadlbauer retired from the company's management and left Jan Klose and Mathias Reichert to manage ongoing operations.

At the end of June 2020 it was announced that all shares in Deck 13 and the publishing arm Deck 13 Production had been purchased by Focus Home Interactive , a French publisher of computer games. Focus was already the publisher for the two parts of The Surge series. been. The purchase price was 7.1 million euros. Both Klose and Reichert want to continue managing the company after the takeover.

technology

Deck13 develops its own game and graphics engine FLEDGE for several platforms (PC, Mac, XBox 360, XBox One, PS3, PS4, iOS). In previous titles (from Ankh to Venetica / Haunted) the in-house game engine PINA was used, which uses a modified version of the free OGRE engine for 3D rendering .
