astragon Entertainment is a German publisher for computer games that specializes primarily in the production and distribution of casual games , simulations and edutainment titles. The company is a subsidiary of Rondomedia . In July 2015, Rondomedia took over the name of the subsidiary and operates as astragon Sales & Services GmbH, so that the companies now appear as the astragon group.

history

The company was founded in 2000 as astragon Software GmbH in Hagen . The software company has been based in Mönchengladbach since the end of 2004 . In 2009 and 2010 the company was named one of the market leaders in the genre of so-called everyday simulations. One of the best-known product lines is the farming simulator developed by Giants Software, which was the most successful game in the budget games market segment in Germany in 2010. The various versions of the game had sold over a million times by May 2011.

In addition to the farming simulator , the company offers numerous other simulation games, for example for crane or excavator drivers, as employees in garbage disposal and for controlling road sweepers or cable cars. They are mostly niche products that are not served by larger international game providers such as Electronic Arts . The games are often criticized by specialist magazines for computer games, but still sell successfully.

According to the company, when developing its games, it pays attention to realism and works with experts in the respective fields, both in the implementation of realistic physical conditions and in the detailed design of machines and vehicles. The development time of the games is between six and 24 months.

criticism

The economic success of the "everyday simulations" of Astragon GmbH cannot really be understood by many classic game magazines and players, as the games are mostly characterized by a simple game principle, mediocre graphics and rather average ratings. Nevertheless, they are often bestsellers that can regularly take top positions in the software charts for budget games.
