The Farming Simulator is a simulation game series by the independent developer Giants Software from Schlieren near Zurich . The first part of the series was the Farming Simulator 2008. Other versions appeared in 2009 (Gold Edition), 2011 (Platinum Edition), 2012 (Mobile), 2013 (Titanium Edition), 2014 (Mobile), 2015 (Gold Edition), 2016 (Mobile), 2017 (Platinum Edition), 2018 (Mobile) and 2019 (Platinum Edition) as well as 2020 (Mobile).
The game is the most successful Swiss computer game. It became one of the best-selling computer games in Germany and Switzerland. It also enjoyed some popularity in France and England. The Farming Simulator 2013 sold more than two million times, according to the publisher.
Gameplay
The game has two different game modes: missions and the unlimited career mode. The missions take on the role of tutorials , in which the player can familiarize himself with the game principle, the equipment and the activities and gain first impressions. Typical mission goals are, for example, the cultivation of a given area with an agricultural implement, or the driving of a predetermined distance for a time.
The aim of the career mode is to become a modern and successful farmer by cultivating fields. At the beginning, the player starts on a farm with a few very small machines, which can be exchanged for larger machines during the course of the game with the profit generated. An economic system influences the prices achieved for the harvest. A simple weather simulation and a day-night cycle also require a little planning as to when which activities can be carried out. The machines must be filled with fuel and the devices with contents such as B. seeds are filled. However, as is common in some simulations, the character does not need to be supplied.
As of the 2011 version, animals such as cows are also included; in the 2013 version, sheep and chickens were added to the cows , which serve as a further source of income in addition to the harvest. In the 17 there are also pigs , in the 19 horses and dogs were added. In addition, additional income can be generated by generating electricity. For this purpose, the player can freely place solar power plants and wind power plants. It is also possible to operate a biogas plant as well as greenhouses and apiaries. With the release of Farming Simulator 15, forestry is also integrated into the game.
Up to Farming Simulator 17, you could also find 100 items on the first map in each game in order to receive additional rewards. In the Farming Simulator 2009 and 2011 there were glass bottles (reward: none) in the 2013 horseshoe (reward: one million euros for a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow), in the 15 (false) gold coins (reward: 250,000 liters of each type of fruit by one Wishing well), as well as gold nuggets in the 17 (reward: one million euros)
Multiplayer mode
From the 2011 version a multiplayer mode is included, but there is no central server. The connections are therefore established using a peer-to-peer method. In order to use the mode, the players involved must have the same game expansions. At the beginning of 2013, the implementation of dedicated Windows servers was implemented through a crowdfunding campaign. However, this does not apply to the Nintendo Switch version.
Modifications
Only original agricultural machinery and equipment are included as standard. Some manufacturers are for example Deutz-Fahr , Case IH and Krone . The fictitious brand Lizard is used to represent models that cannot be named with brand names for licensing reasons. With the help of “ Mods ”, the farming simulator can be expanded to include new maps, functions (e.g. departure helpers), machines, devices and objects. These so-called "LS Mods" can be added to the game using drag and drop or the in-game "Modhub". The modding scene is partially supported by Giants Software, taking into account the conditions established by Giants, with a developer's own download portal and a special portal for the developers. Here it is necessary to be able to speak the English language. Extensive help on the subject of modding is not granted by Giants.
