The Nintendo Switch ( Switch or NSW for short , code name : NX ) is the first hybrid game console from the Japanese manufacturer Nintendo . It was published on March 3, 2017 in Europe , Australia , North America and Asia and on August 15, 2017 in Argentina . As a hybrid, the successor to the Wii U can be used as a stationary console connected to an external screen and as a handheld console . Removable control elements called " Joy-Con " allow games in a third variant, the so-called table mode. The Nintendo switch belongs to the eighth generation of consoles and is in direct competition with Sony 's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft 's Xbox One .

On September 20, 2019, the Nintendo Switch Lite was a second, more compact model of the console that only supports handheld mode.

On September 19, 2018, Nintendo Switch Online was an online service for the Switch.

On March 17, 2015, the Nintendo Switch (then still under the code name "NX") was announced for the first time. A year and a half later, on October 20, 2016, the Nintendo Switch was officially shown to the public for the first time in a preview trailer that was uncommented by Nintendo. A detailed presentation took place on January 13, 2017, in which hardware, games, price and publication were discussed in more detail. On 3 March 2017, the Nintendo switch appeared in Europe, Australia, North America and Asia to coincide with the AAA - launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild .

hardware

The console is similar to a tablet or smartphone , but with removable controls called "Joy-Con", which can be connected to the left and right side of the housing using a metal rail. The Joy-Con can also be used separately, for example to play with two people, with each player using one Joy-Con mostly horizontally but sometimes also vertically. To play on a screen, the handheld component is plugged into a base station called “Nintendo Switch Station” (officially called “Dock” in English and colloquially in this country), which is connected to a screen using an HDMI cable. The two removed Joy-Con parts can be attached to the Joy-Con holder for playing. Also available separately is the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller , which looks like a classic gamepad and is intended to provide a more pleasant experience for longer gaming times. To charge the console or to connect it to the dock, a connection according to the USB-Type-C standard is available.

As a data carrier for games, the Nintendo Switch supports game modules (so-called game cards ). The Nintendo Switch also has 32 GB of internal flash memory , as well as a slot for microSD XC memory cards and a 3.5 mm jack for headsets and headphones. The memory can be expanded with microSD cards with a maximum size of 2 TB . In the future, it should also be possible to use USB storage devices on the dock.

The handheld component has a touch-sensitive 6.2-inch liquid crystal screen with a refresh rate of 60 Hz and a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels , which corresponds to a pixel density of 237 pixels per inch. In operation via the dock, the resolution can be increased and output via the HDMI output with a maximum of 1920 × 1080 pixels at a maximum of 60 images per second, depending on the application. A one-chip system based on the ARM architecture from Nvidia , which is based on the Tegra series, is used as the processor . The integrated main processor (CPU) runs at 1020 MHz in both handheld and TV mode. With the release of firmware 8.0 in April 2019, it became known that Nintendo would temporarily increase the CPU clock frequency to up to 1.75 GHz for faster loading of games. The clock rate of the graphics processor (GPU) is either 307.2 MHz or 384 MHz in handheld mode. In TV mode, the clock can also be increased to 768 MHz thanks to the dock's permanent power supply. The memory controller of the chip is always 1331.2 MHz in handheld mode and can run up to 1600 MHz in TV mode.

The Nintendo Switch has 4 GB of RAM of the type LPDDR 4 available as main memory . According to Nintendo, a 16 Wh battery with 4310  mAh should allow between two and six hours of running time in handheld mode, depending on the application. With the Joy-Con connected, the console weighs 398 g (297 g without Joy-Con) and measures 239 × 102 × 13.9 mm (W × D × H) with the Joy-Con connected. In addition to an HDMI output and USB-C connection for the power supply, the dock has a USB 3.0 and two further USB 2.0 connections.

As a communication interface, the Nintendo Switch supports 2.4 and 5 GHz WLAN and Bluetooth 4.1 for transferring controller inputs in table and TV mode. In addition, an NFC chip is built into the right Joy-Con controller so that Nintendo's Amiibo collectible figures and cards can be read. The right Joy-Con also has an infrared camera, which is used in 1-2-Switch and Nintendo Labo , among other things .

Using a direct ad-hoc network, it is possible to connect up to eight switch consoles for local multiplayer games. The download game functionality of Nintendo DS and 3DS is not available, however, so that every player needs a copy of the game in addition to a Switch console.

Although the console has a bluetooth module to communicate with the controllers, it cannot be used with bluetooth devices such as wireless keyboards , headphones or headsets . For Bluetooth headsets, adapters for the USB-C port of the Nintendo Switch have been developed and sold by third-party suppliers that allow the headphones to be used via Bluetooth. The microphones of Bluetooth headsets, on the other hand, are still not addressable and a microphone that is plugged into the 3.5 mm jack connector must be used. Firmware higher than version 4.0.0 is required for the Bluetooth adapter on the console's USB port .

Models

Nintendo Switch

The first model of the Nintendo Switch family called Nintendo Switch was released in Europe on March 3, 2017 at a price of 329 euros . At the beginning of September 2019, a revision of the Nintendo Switch appeared, which has a longer battery life and comes in a slightly different packaging (red instead of white background) and model number (MOD. HAC-001-01 instead of MOD. HAC-001). While the original Nintendo Switch has so far lasted 2.5 to 6.5 hours, depending on the game and brightness setting, according to the product information, the revision of the model reached 4.5 to 9 hours. Like the first version, the revision of the Nintendo Switch has 4 GB of RAM, which, however, now works much faster thanks to the LPDDR4X type. The luminance of the display is also higher in the new switch version, which means that the image can be better recognized in direct sunlight. In addition, the Joy-Con included with the switch revision have been slightly revised.

Nintendo Switch Lite

On July 10, 2019, Nintendo announced a second model in the Nintendo Switch product line under the name Nintendo Switch Lite (mostly known as Switch Lite for short ). The new console is only suitable as a handheld and is compatible with all Nintendo Switch games that support this mode. It cannot be connected to an external screen and is significantly smaller, lighter and cheaper than the TV console. The system weighs 275 g, is 91.1 × 208 × 13.9 mm in size (H × W × D), has 32 GB of internal flash memory like the Nintendo Switch and was first released in the United States on September 20, 2019 at a suggested retail price of 199 US dollars or 220 euros. The liquid crystal screen of the Nintendo Switch Lite measures only 5.5 inches, the resolution and refresh rate of 1280 × 720 pixels or 60 Hz corresponds to that of the Nintendo Switch, which means that the Switch Lite now has a pixel density of 267 ppi instead of 237 ppi. The HD rumble function and the infrared camera have also been removed. The Nintendo Switch Lite does not have a detachable Joy-Con, rather the control units are permanently connected to the console. The four buttons on the left Joy-Con of the Nintendo Switch have now been replaced by a full-fledged control pad . The battery life of the Nintendo Switch Lite should be a little longer compared to that of the Nintendo Switch. For example, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild should run at full screen brightness on the Nintendo Switch Lite for about 4 hours and on the first generation of the Nintendo Switch for only about 3 hours. The other technical data have remained largely the same compared to the Nintendo Switch. The console is available in yellow, gray and turquoise. Although the console only officially supports games that support handheld mode, separately sold Joy-Con can wirelessly connect to the Nintendo Switch Lite to play games that do not support handheld mode. Like the Nintendo Switch, the Switch Lite is compatible with microSD cards with a capacity of up to 2 TB.

Virtual Console

When the Nintendo Switch was released, Nintendo did not announce anything regarding the Virtual Console service. Instead, the Japanese company Hamster offers Neo-Geo games with the prefix "ACA NEO GEO" for download. Since September 2017 Nintendo has published its arcade games from the 1980s with the prefix "Arcade Archives"; Hamster is responsible for the technical implementation. Nintendo offers NES and SNES games as part of Nintendo Switch Online .

Nintendo Labo

Nintendo Labo is a kit that consists of cardboard shapes and can be used as an interactive toy with the sensors and output options of the Nintendo Switch . The finished constructions are called Toy-Con by Nintendo . The sets can be built completely without scissors or glue and can therefore be easily taken apart and reassembled. Different games can be played with the Toy-Con using the software included in the scope of delivery.

Development of sales figures

The first estimated sales figures have been announced from the UK . There, the console sold around 80,000 times in the first two days. Reggie Fils-Aimé , Nintendo of America's Chief Operating Officer until the beginning of 2019 , announced in an interview with the New York Times reporter Nick Wingfield that the Switch had the best sales start of all Nintendo consoles in the first two days in America would have. In France , around 105,000 consoles were sold on the launch weekend. According to figures published by Media Create, 329,159 units of the Switch had been sold in Japan by March 5, and an additional 61,998 units by March 12. After four weeks, sales in Japan were already 519,504 copies. After 16 weeks around 1 million devices have already been sold in Japan. The Switch also sold comparatively well in Spain with around 45,000 units on the opening weekend. In the first month, the Nintendo Switch was able to sell approximately 2.74 million times worldwide. In addition, around 5.46 million Switch games were sold in March 2017 - around 2.76 million copies were The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild .

According to a financial report published by Nintendo on July 26, 2017, around 4.70 million Nintendo Switch units and around 13.60 million games for the console had been sold worldwide by the end of June 2017. According to Nintendo, the console had been sold over 7.63 million times by the end of September 2017. In December 2017, Nintendo announced that the Switch had sold over 10 million times worldwide after 9 months. In addition, three titles for the console were sold over 5 million copies each, these are The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey .

According to a financial report published by Nintendo on March 31, 2018, around 17.79 million Nintendo Switch units and a total of around 68.97 million games for the console had been sold worldwide by the end of March 2018.

Nintendo published updated sales figures for all consoles of the company as of December 31, 2018 at the end of January 2019. There, around 32.27 million units and around 163.61 million games were sold for the Switch. For the console, this has exceeded the total sales of the Nintendo GameCube after almost two years .

At the end of April, Nintendo published again updated sales figures as of March 31, 2019. Around 34.74 million consoles and 187.52 million games were sold. This makes the Nintendo Switch more successful than the Nintendo 64 in the second year of its release .

At the end of July, Nintendo published a new annual report as of July 30, 2019: 36.87 million Nintendo Switch consoles were sold.

As of December 31, 2019, the Nintendo Switch had sold 52.48 million times. This exceeds the sales figures for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System .

Bundles

At the time of release, the Nintendo Switch was available in a bundle with two gray Joy-Con and alternatively with neon-red / neon-blue-colored Joy-Con. In the months that followed, additional bundles were released that differ in the colors of the Joy-Con, the design of the console and / or the accessories. The hardware itself has remained identical from a technical point of view (apart from a stronger WLAN module and a warmer screen in the consoles from 2018 and later).

Problems

Since the beginning of March 2017, users and testers have noticed technical problems with individual devices. This includes:

  • Scratches caused by sliding it into the docking station
  • Pixel errors
  • Connection problems, especially with the left Joy-Con controller (free repairs possible via customer service)
  • bent consoles
  • flickering screen
  • very weak WiFi connection for some users
  • Analog sticks of the Joy-Con that react without input (Joy-Con-Drift) ( contact spray , which also works with electronics, can help here)

reception

In general, the Nintendo Switch, especially in contrast to the failure of the Wii U, is extremely popular and continues to achieve new sales records.

Chris Plante from The Verge magazine sees parallels between the Nintendo Switch and the Sega Nomad , although the Sega Nomad has no docking station and only has a single connection for an additional controller. In addition, the Nomad must be held permanently in hand to play.

Andreas Stegmüller from Hardwareluxx complains that the prices for accessories on the Nintendo Switch are relatively high compared to the Xbox One. For example, he considers the price of around 80 euros for a pair of Joy-Con (the RRP is 90 euros) or 25 euros for the Joy-Con holder with built-in charging station to be “anything but a bargain”.

Viktor Eippert from PC Games judges that the console lags behind the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in stationary operation, but that nobody fools it in portable operation.

Homebrew

A homebrew launcher was released back in February 2018, among other things due to an exploit in the Nvidia Tegra processor. Other homebrew applications include: E.g. for editing saved games, creating backups , using cheats , pirating , playing games from other platforms via emulators or running unsigned software that does not come from Nintendo. However, homebrew can also render the console unusable or faulty. Nintendo uses console or account bans on hacked systems. This prevents the console or the linked account from accessing Nintendo's online services. The exploit cannot be plugged by software because it is a boot ROM bug in the hardware. As a result, Nintendo quietly launched a new, revised version of the console that prevents hacks from the exploit.

In July 2019, developers managed to port the Android- based custom ROM LineageOS to the Nintendo Switch. However, the camera and microphone were missing. The project is called Switchroot. Developers had previously managed to port Android Q and Linux can now also be booted on the console. A developer also succeeded in streaming PC games to the console screen without a capture card or vice versa.

MonoNX for Android appeared as one of the first switch emulators, but it only outputs lines of text. The open source emulator Yuzu has been available for Microsoft Windows and Linux since 2019 . However, there are severe performance problems, not all games are supported, and downloading unlicensed ROM files is illegal.

Trivia

  • Due to a change of manufacturer, the switch consoles from 2018 have a screen with a warmer color temperature and a revised WLAN module, which should enable improved reception.
  • The home button on the right Joy-Con and on the Pro Controller hides an LED light that can light up the transparent ring around the button in blue. According to Nintendo, the home button should flash when a message is received. So far (status: firmware version 9.1.0) this function has only been used for alarm messages (previously only available in the games Ring Fit Adventure and Dr. Kawashima's brain jogging ).
  • The maximum playing time of a game that can be displayed on a user side is (as of: firmware version 9.1.0) 9,999 hours of play.
