Nintendo Labo is a series of construction kits made from cardboard shapes that can be used as an interactive toy with the sensors and output options of the Nintendo Switch . It was developed and published by the Japanese video game company Nintendo .

The finished constructions are called Toy-Con by Nintendo . The sets are built without scissors and glue and can therefore be easily taken apart and reassembled again. Different games can be played with the Toy-Con using the associated Nintendo Switch software card.

Gameplay

Nintendo Labo consists of various Labo sets, each of which contains cardboard sheets and a few other materials that are needed to build the models known as "Toy-Con" . The Labo-Sets also contain a game card , which contains the interactive instructions for assembling the Toy-Con and software with which the Toy-Con can interact.

After a Toy-Con has been assembled, the Joy-Con of the Nintendo Switch, and the screen of the Angel and the house , are plugged into it. The Joy-Con recognize user inputs with their sensors or otherwise interact with the Toy-Con . For example, the piano uses the infrared sensor on the right Joy-Con to detect the keys the player has pressed , while the RC car uses the Joy-Con's HD vibration to get around.

Toy-Con workshop

The Toy-Con workshop is a function included in Nintendo Labo , with which you can set your own commands for the Joy-Con in a simplified development environment . An input is always linked to a specific output .

The Nintendo Labo: Multi Set is a cardboard kit that can be used with the Nintendo Switch as an interactive toy . It is part of the Nintendo Labo range and contains five different Toy-Con models. It was first released on April 20, 2018 at the same time as the Robo Set .

Included Toy-Con

Rc car

The RC car can be moved using the HD vibration of the Joy-Con controller while you control it using the touchscreen of the Nintendo Switch console. In automatic driving mode, the RC car drives by itself by recognizing certain markings through the infrared motion camera. The IR motion camera makes it possible to control the RC car even in the dark. You can see a small night picture on the screen of the Nintendo Switch console and can thus continue to avoid obstacles. If you have two pairs of Joy-Con controllers, you can compete against each other in sumo wrestling matches using the two RC cars included in the multi-set.

fishing rod

The fishing rod can be used to catch fish on the Nintendo Switch console. You can fish in shallow and deep waters and discover different types of fish. If a fish bites, the rod vibrates due to the HD vibration of the Joy-Con controller. The crank, in which the other Joy-Con controller is located, is now used to pull the catch ashore. The caught fish can be placed in an aquarium and viewed while swimming. With the Toy-Con piano, special cards can be read in to create your own fish. These cards are made of paper, so you can cut out your own fish shape. Scanned fish can be customized with colors and patterns on the Nintendo Switch console. Specially created fish can then be fished like other fish.

House

The house that is inhabited by a small creature to interact with can be modified with various cardboard pens. If you put several pens in the house at the same time, the scene changes and you can play different games with the little creature. With the cable block it is possible to create portals, even between two houses, i.e. two Nintendo Switch consoles.

motorcycle

The motorcycle, like a real motorcycle, has a throttle. If you turn the throttle, in which one of the Joy-Con controllers is located, the motorcycle accelerates. If you lean into the curves, the motorcycle steers in the corresponding direction. There are three different Grand Prix in which you have to prove your skills on several routes: Beginner Grand Prix, Intermediate Grand Prix and Advanced Grand Prix. If you want to do a wheelie, you pull up the handlebar. In order to drift in a curve, you have to brake and accelerate at the same time. The Toy-Con mini motorcycle can be moved back and forth in the air to draw your own track in the game. In the game, boost items can still be placed on the course, the time of day and the course width can be set and water can be added. The Toy-Con scanner, which works with the IR motion camera, can scan objects that appear in the stadium of the game.

An update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe released in June 2018 added the ability to use the motorcycle toy-con as a control.

piano

The piano produces tones that can be set an octave higher or lower using a lever on the side. The interior of the piano is hollow. The IR motion camera on the right Joy-Con controller detects which key is being played. Different tones can be played with different buttons, e.g. B. men's voices or cat meowing. The pitch of the piano can be changed with the help of a wave map, which is also scanned by the IR motion camera. In the recording mode you can record and save your own songs. The tempo of the recorded song can be set with the Toy-Con baton.

The Nintendo Labo: Robo Set is a cardboard kit that can be used with the Nintendo Switch as an interactive toy. It contains a robot suit that the player can put on and use it to control a virtual robot on the Nintendo Switch.

The Robo Set is part of the Nintendo Labo series and appeared, at the same time as the Multi Set , for the first time on April 20, 2018. It was developed and published by Nintendo .

Gameplay

The Nintendo Labo: Robo Set contains kits that are needed to build a “robot suit” that the player can put on. The set contains kits for a visor and a backpack. The player's arms and legs are connected to the backpack with cords. The right Joy-Con is in the backpack, which recognizes how the player is moving by means of weights that the player moves up and down by moving his arms. The left Joy-Con is inserted into the visor.

Through the movements that the player makes, he controls a robot on the Nintendo Switch. The game contains different game modes. In the normal "robot" mode, the robot is in a city where it has to destroy as much as possible within a time limit in order to get as many points as possible. In exam mode, the player has to pass 15 levels in which he has to eliminate various opponents. In the “garage” the player can change the appearance of the digital robot on the television screen by inserting and turning cardboard screws. In the "Robo-Studio" mode, the player places the screen of the Nintendo Switch console in the backpack and receives different noises depending on their movement.

Nintendo Labo: VR

On April 12, 2019 Nintendo will release the fourth set, with which it is possible to use the Nintendo Switch as a virtual reality headset . The set was inspired by Google Cardboard , with which it is possible to use smartphones as a VR headset by inserting them into a cardboard frame with two special lenses.

The set is said to cost 80 US dollars and, in addition to the kit for VR glasses, also includes one for an elephant's trunk, a camera, a bird, a wind pedal and a blaster. There will be a total of six constructions. A lower-cost $ 40 base package only includes the standard glasses and blaster. Two expansion packages for the standard versions (one with a camera and elephant and one with a bird and wind pedal) should cost US $ 20. A price for Germany is not yet known.

Compared to other VR headsets, however, the resolution of the switch is significantly lower, which greatly affects the immersion in virtual reality and the well-being of use. New games for VR and optimizations for well-known titles are to follow.

A VR update for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey games was released on April 26th .

Development and publication

Nintendo Labo was first introduced on January 17, 2018. April 27, 2018 was given as the release date for Europe. On July 26, 2018, Nintendo announced a third Labo model, the Vehicle Set. This was published worldwide on September 14, 2018.

Although Nintendo Labo was made to be assembled simply by plugging it together, Nintendo released a design package worldwide on April 20, 2018, which contains two rolls of adhesive tape with different designs, two sticker sheets and two templates . At the same time, five more design packs were released exclusively in Japan, which only contained adhesive tape with Nintendo Labo or Super Mario motifs.
