The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild ( Japanese title: ゼルダの伝説ブレスオブザワイルド, Zeruda no Densetsu: buresu obu za Wairudo, literally "The Legend of Zelda: The breath of wilderness") is an open-world - video game from the The Legend of Zelda series. The game was developed by Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development for the Nintendo Wii U and Switch consoles and released on March 3, 2017. After the new editions The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, this is the third series title for the Wii U and the first series title for the Nintendo Switch. A sequel for the Nintendo Switch is currently in the works.

action

After the devastation of Ganon repeatedly attacks the land of Hyrule in its reincarnations, 10,000 years before the beginning of the plot of Breath of the Wild, the cycle can be interrupted by the construction of four machines, the so-called titans, and numerous smaller machines, the guardians. 100 years before the events of the game, the kingdom of Hyrule is gearing up for a new defense based on a prophecy that heralds the return of Ganon, and undertakes extensive archaeological expeditions in which the titans and guardians are rediscovered and gradually made usable. The titans are - based on the events 10,000 years ago - controlled by warriors from different races. A fifth warrior, the young man Link, wields the master sword, a legendary blade that has the power to seal evil. The princess Hyrules, Zelda, is said to have magical sealing power as the heiress of the princess from the legend, but initially she does not manage to access it.

Eventually Ganon returns and the warriors try to repel him, but he manages to bring guards and titans under his control and turn them against the armies of Hyrule. With her help, he ravages the country and wounds the protagonist Link, who is fleeing with the princess in the village of Hateno, so that Zelda has him brought to the so-called shrine of life , where he regenerates in a hundred-year sleep. At the same time, Ganon is sealed under Princess Zelda's control in Hyrule Castle; her magical powers were awakened when she defended the wounded Link on the run from the guards.

The game begins in the Shrine of Life with Link's awakening from his hundred-year sleep. Although he has fully recovered, he can no longer remember the previous events. He explores the area around the shrine and meets an old man on the Forgotten Plateau who tells Link about the devastation of Ganon. After a while, the old man reveals himself to be the ghost of Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule, the last king of Hyrule, who died in the Great Devastation 100 years ago. Hyrule asks Link to save his people and his daughter Zelda and leaves him with a parasail.

In the village of Kakariko Link meets the aged Impa, Zelda's personal servant, who informs him about the four titans. If Link wants to free the Titans from Ganon, he must go to the four peoples of Hyrules, from whose midst the warriors had been put as pilots of the Titans. The four pilots came from the peoples of the Gorons, the Gerudos, the Orni and the Zora. She also advises Link to visit the Institute for Ancient Research in Hateno . There he receives a photo module that contains some old photographs of places where key scenes in Link's relationship with Zelda took place. When Link visits these places, he gets parts of his memories back.

Little by little Link travels to the people of Hyrules and frees the Titans. In doing so, he frees the souls of the warriors who were slain in the devastation and improves the lives of the people of Hyrule. As a result of each liberation, Link receives new fighting skills as a thank you. At the same time, he visits shrines that were built by priests of the goddess Hylia and are supposed to prepare the hero for the fight against Ganon. During his adventure, Link regains the master sword that he wore before he went to sleep and that Zelda brought to safe custody in the secluded Krog forest, over which the ancient decubal tree watches over. Finally he makes his way to Ganon and defeats him with the help of the freed titans. This frees Princess Zelda.

In the credits, Link and Zelda find themselves on a mountain. Zelda explains to Link that she may have lost her powers. However, she adds that she no longer needs them. Then she decides to rebuild Hyrule together with Link and return it to its former glory.

Gameplay

Game world

The focus of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the game is on the completely open-plan world , even the Nintendo Open Air calls. According to the producer of the game, Eiji Aonuma , it should have the maximum size that can be implemented on the Wii U and be comparable in size to the Japanese city of Kyoto . This makes the game world in Breath of the Wild the largest that has ever existed in a game in the The Legend of Zelda series.

Similar to the original The Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System , the player is not given a fixed path that he must follow in order for the game to proceed. Instead, the player can theoretically travel to any other place at any time and perform tasks there. For example, after a relatively short game time, it is possible to visit Hyrule Castle and defeat The Devastation Ganon , the final boss of the game. However, as the game progresses, Link learns new skills that make it easier to defeat the final boss. This motivates the player to explore the game world and perform additional tasks. The game also has a dynamic time course and dynamic weather changes.

Traveling the world can be done on foot or on horseback. The horse automatically avoids obstacles, which should, for example, facilitate simultaneous riding and shooting at opponents with arrows. Link can also jump off the horse so that he can better hit his targets in a bullet time . Link also has a glider that allows him to slide down from high places.

Another new feature of the game is climbing. In Breath of the Wild , Link can climb almost any surface as long as he has enough stamina. However, when it rains it very often loses its grip and slips.

Shrines

In addition to the open world, dungeons in the form of shrines also exist in the game . In them there are mostly puzzles or smaller boss fights . A total of 120 shrines can be found in the game. The rewards received from closed shrines, the so-called signs of probation, can be exchanged for additional heart containers (life energy) or additional stamina. Shrines that have already been visited also serve as a fast travel destination . In addition to the more compact shrines, Breath of the Wild also has four slightly larger dungeons in the form of so-called titans .

Control and combat system

Although Link is usually left-handed, as in many other Zelda titles, he appears as right-handed in this game. The producer Eiji Aonuma explained that this harmonizes better with the Joy-Con control. For example, the sword is controlled with the right Joy-Con, which is why it is also wielded with the left right hand. According to Aonuma, the game's graphic style is inspired by gouache and outdoor painting to bring out the vast, open world.

The combat system in Breath of the Wild is largely identical to the system known from its predecessors. Opponents are targeted with the help of Z-targeting, which is already known from Ocarina of Time, and can thus be fought better. One innovation, however, is the larger selection of weapons: In addition to the classic sword, Link u. a. also use clubs, lances or great swords in combat. There is also a large selection of shields and bows.

If a certain weapon, a certain shield or a certain bow is used often in combat, it can break. You can get new weapons from treasure chests or you can steal the weapons of your opponents. Weapons and shields made of wood can also burn if they come into contact with fire, for example.

Compared to its immediate predecessors, Breath of the Wild is also characterized by a higher degree of difficulty, not only in terms of the combat system, in which precisely timed parades, resource management due to limited durability weapons and a dynamic and creative approach are rewarded, but also because of the fact that they are not linearly told story, which requires a largely independent exploration of the game world. In addition, numerous main and side quests cannot - as in numerous other representatives of the open world genre - be solved by simply reaching a point on the overview map, but require close observation of the game world and the independent combination of hints.

development

On January 23, 2013, Aonuma announced while streaming from Nintendo that a new title in the computer game series The Legend of Zelda for the Wii U home console was in development. Aonuma said that The Legend of Zelda game took up ideas from the older Zelda games, such as mastering dungeons in any order, with which the team wanted to focus on returning to the origins. Aonuma presented the first game scenes at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2014. The year of publication of the The Legend of Zelda title, announced as an open world game, was given as 2015. However, on March 27, 2015, Aonuma announced that it was no longer targeting the 2015 release date and that the game would not be featured at the 2015 Electronic Entertainment Expo. As a justification, he cited on Facebook and YouTube that Nintendo needed more time so that all ideas can come to life in the way you intended. According to Aonuma, “the team has experienced unprecedented room for maneuver in the Zelda game world”, which brings “countless new possibilities for the game”. This should have triggered an additional creative boost with many new ideas. The game should be as good as the console can get.

Initially, the game was postponed indefinitely. In June 2015, was chief operating officer of Nintendo of America , Reggie Fils-Aime , but in an interview announced that the game in 2016 will come on the market. During the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015, Nintendo developer Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that the computer game would be produced for the Wii U, although a successor console with Switch has already been announced. On April 27, 2016, the publication was postponed to 2017. Nintendo also announced that the game will be released for both the Wii U and the new Switch console at the same time. At E3 2016, Nintendo announced the game's official title: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild . Finally, the release date for the Nintendo Switch presentation was set for March 3, 2017; thus the game is one of the launch titles for the Switch.

At E3 2019, it was announced that development had started on a direct sequel and a short preview trailer with no game scenes was shown.

Technical

The delivered versions of the game differ technically in some details. Both the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch calculate the game in a dynamic resolution. The Wii-U version between 720p and 648p without anti-aliasing. The switch in docked mode between 900p and 810p, with anti-aliasing. In handheld mode, the Switch calculates the game in the same resolution as the Wii U.

The game runs on both consoles at 30 frames per second and double-buffered V-Sync . However, frame rate drops occasionally occur on both platforms (Wii U and Switch in docked mode). In handheld mode, Breath of the Wild runs much more smoothly on the Nintendo Switch . There are also differences in sound. The Switch offers better ambient sound quality than the Wii U.

The digital version of the Switch is about 13.4 GB, the digital Wii-U version about 13 GB. The disc version of the game for Wii U requires approximately 3 GB of free space on the console or on compatible external storage.

Music and scoring

music

The music for the game was written by Yasuaki Iwata and Manaka Kataoka. Hajime Wakai acted as sound director. According to Wakai, the music shouldn't cover up the ambient noise and should rather stay in the background. Because of this, you will hear mostly calm piano sounds in the game as you move around in the wilderness of Hyrule . Wakai also refers to the piano as the main instrument on the soundtrack. Only in cities, dungeons or during boss fights does the music come to the fore.

Speech output

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the first Zelda game, which partly also includes spoken dialogue. This also has the consequence that the player cannot rename the main character Link at will, as in the predecessors, since Link is addressed by his name by some characters. The majority of the dialogs, however, are displayed in the classic way using dialog boxes .

“It's really difficult to leave an impression on players with just text. It's not that I made everything voiced. But I have these moments where I want to leave impressions on users. I add voice there. "

“It's really difficult to make a lasting impression on the player with just text. It's not that I had everything set to music. But I have these moments when I want to make an impression on the player. Here I insert voices. "

- Eiji Aonuma : polygon

The German voices of the characters come from Sven Plate , Christian Zeiger , Helmut Krauss , Nic Romm , René Dawn-Claude , Cornelia Waibel, Julia Casper, Nora Jokhosha , Silke Matthias , Dirk Petrick , Magdalena Turba , Reinhard Scheunemann and Thomas Schmuckert .

Publication and Marketing

When the Wii U was launched in 2012, Nintendo showed a technical demo from the world of The Legend of Zelda with a realistic graphic style at the Electronic Entertainment Expo . In 2014 Nintendo presented a first game trailer and a demo of the game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, showing the new cel-shading graphic style for the first time . At the end of the same year, Eiji Aonuma and Shigeru Miyamoto played an excerpt from the game at The Game Awards , whereby the size of the game world should also be conveyed. At the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016, Nintendo presented almost exclusively The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at its booth. The game was also highlighted in the first preview video on the Nintendo Switch.

Additional content

On February 14, 2017, Aonuma announced via video message that Nintendo would provide additional content via download ( DLC ) after the game had started . On June 30, 2017, the first DLC was released under the title "The legendary trials". This contained, among other things, additional clothing for Link, new challenges and a teleport medallion with which any point on the map can be set as a fast travel destination. The second DLC with the title "The Ballad of the Recken" was released on December 8th, 2017. In addition to other items of clothing, the DLC contained, among other things, an additional Titan and further story elements. After finishing "The Warrior's Ballad" the player receives a motorcycle which can be used next to horses for fast movement.

reception

Before publication

Already the announcement was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild positive feedback. Before the game was postponed to 2016, it was the most anticipated game for 2015 on GameTrailers . In a customer survey on this website, it was the second most anticipated game for that year after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt .

On the IGN Entertainment website , the first demo at the Electronic Entertainment Expo was praised for the abundance of details and the opinion was expressed that the game looked like a greatly improved Zelda game. The author said that the art style with the movement of the blades of grass, the mountains and the buildings was based on the previous game Skyward Sword . On the page metro.co.uk the similarity to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was also recognized. However, it was written there that the Wii U game looked more realistic.
