The 2020 Game Awards logo
The Game Awards are an annual awards show that recognizes achievements in the computer game industry. During the celebrations, presentations of new titles and detailed views of games that have already been announced can also be seen. The shows are produced and hosted by Geoff Keighley , who worked on its predecessor, the Spike Video Game Awards , for over ten years .
story
From 2003 to 2013 , towards the end of each calendar year, the American television station Spike TV broadcast the Spike Video Game Awards (VGA) to honor computer games released that year. Geoff Keighley was the producer and presenter of these programs. In 2013, Spike decided to rename the awards from VGA to VGX to show that they wanted to focus more on the next generation of games introduced with the start of the eighth generation of consoles and also placed the comedian and actor Joel McHale as co-host alongside Keighley. The 2013 event was seen as a disappointment, with a focus on commercial performance rather than a celebration of computer games.
Keighley decided to withdraw from another engagement with the VGX and allowed Spike to keep ownership of the VGX; In November 2014, Spike TV announced that they had decided to end the awards show entirely. Instead, Keighley worked with several companies in the industry, including the console manufacturers Sony , Microsoft and Nintendo, as well as several major publishers , to provide financial support for a new award show, the Game Awards, and to realize it with Spike's permission. Keighley was able to secure a venue for the live event. Without a television broadcaster, Keighley and the partners agreed to stream the live show on the console networks and Valve's Steam platform in order to reach a larger audience than Spike TV.
The procedure
The Game Awards have an advisory committee made up of representatives from hardware manufacturers Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and AMD, as well as software manufacturers Electronic Arts , Activision , Rockstar Games , Ubisoft , Valve and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment . This committee selects around thirty influential representatives of the press from the computer game industry, who are able to nominate computer games in several categories and then vote. Otherwise, the advisory board does not participate in the nomination or voting process. During the nomination round, each of the newsrooms presents a list of games in several categories; Games for e-sports -Categories be selected this editorial by a specialized group. The committee adheres to the nominations and selects the most frequently nominated titles for voting on the same representatives. Before 2017, the winners were selected by 28 industry experts and representatives, compared to 52 for the 2017 awards.
