Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire ( Jap. ポケットモンスターオメガルビー&アルファサファイア, Poketto Monsutā Omega Rubi & Arufa Safaia ) are for the two Nintendo 3DS published video games from the genre of role-playing games . They are new editions of the Game Boy Advance games Pokémon Ruby and Saphir , published in 2002 (Japan) / 2003 (worldwide), and just like these are set in the Hoenn region. Even in advance, especially after possible hints in the most recently published editions X and Y , there were repeated rumors about a new edition of the editions Rubin and Saphir.

World and action

Like Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire , the game takes place in the Hoenn region , which is based on the Japanese region of Kyūshū and consists of an island and a large sea compared to other Pokémon games.

As usual in Pokémon games, the aim of this offshoot is to stop a criminal organization and become the champ of the Pokémon League. However, this time the criminal organization depends on the edition, as in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. In Omega Rubin, this is Team Magma, which aims to enlarge the land, while in Alpha Saphir, Team Aqua is the criminal organization trying to enlarge the seas.

The plot of the game, which is very much based on Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire , begins with the protagonist moving to Wurzelheim in the Hoenn region. The protagonist's father, Norman, runs a Pokémon arena in the city of Bluebell City . When choosing the protagonist, you can choose between the male protagonist Brix and the female protagonist Maike, but the name is freely selectable. Then the player gets to know his rival, who is the son or daughter of Professor Birk, the Pokémon professor of the region, and who already has experience as a trainer. When choosing Brix as the protagonist, Maike takes on the position of rival, when choosing Maike it's the other way around. The player then receives his first Pokémon from the professor who is currently being attacked by a wild Pokémon in order to save the professor. The player can choose between the three Pokémon Geckarbor, Flemmli and Hydropi, all of which can carry out a mega-development in their last stage of development. After rescuing the professor, the protagonist goes in search of his rival and then carries out his first Pokémon fight against him.

The player then begins his journey through the Hoenn region. In Blossomburg City you meet Norman, the protagonist's father, for the first time, who runs a Pokémon arena there, which the player has not yet challenged. Here you also meet Heiko for the first time, who is another rival and whom the player supports in catching his first Pokémon. The protagonist then continues his journey. Shortly before Metarost City , where the first arena is located, the player meets a member of Team Aqua for the first time in the blossom castle forest , whose intentions the player can however thwart at this point. Some time after the 2nd Pokémon Arena, the protagonist will meet Team Aqua or Team Magma again in the city of Graphitport City and this time even Adrian, the chairman of Team Aqua, or Marc, the chairman of Team Magma. There, the regional star Xenia also gives you the opportunity to take part in a Pokémon competition for the first time. The player then comes to the largest city in the region, Malvenfroh City , where he also competes against his rival Heiko after his third arena fight. Some time later, during the meteor falls , the player meets Team Aqua or Team Magma, who can steal a meteorite from Professor Kosmo. Here you also meet the other of the two teams, which is not evil, but is enemies with the evil team. Shortly thereafter, at an active volcano, the Schlotberg , there is another conflict between the player and the good team, i.e. Team Aqua in Omega Ruby and Team Magma in Alpha Saphir, against the other, bad team. After a fight against the chairman of the evil team, Marc or Adrian, the protagonist receives the meteorite back. Shortly before the sixth Pokémon Arena, the protagonist in the Climate Institute will meet Team Magma in Omega Ruby or Team Aqua in Alpha Sapphire. The player can thwart their plans again this time.

Between the sixth and seventh arena, the player meets Team Aqua or Team Magma on the Pyroberg , but cannot prevent them from taking a mysterious blue (in alpha sapphire) or red (in omega ruby) gemstone to Kyogre (in Alpha Sapphire) or Groudon (in Omega Ruby). The player then receives the remaining gem.

In Pokémon Alpha Saphir, Adrian then sets out for Graphitport City, where he and Team Aqua steal a research submarine in order to convert it for his own purposes, which the protagonist cannot prevent. However, the player is told that Team Aqua's hiding place is in a city called Seegrasulb City, which is where he is heading . When he gets there, Team Aqua has already rebuilt the submarine in order to awaken the legendary Pokémon Kyogre with this and the blue gem to help expand the seas. The protagonist cannot prevent Adrian from escaping to the deep-sea cave by submarine together with Kordula, another high-ranking member of Team Aqua. After the player has won the seventh arena order on the way to the deep-sea cave, a bright pillar of light suddenly rises from there, as the seal of the primeval cave has been broken. Once there, the player and Marc, the chairman of Team Magma, have to watch as Adrian wakes Kyogre with the help of the blue gem after a fight with the protagonist in which he uses a mega tohaido, despite warnings from Kordula. His awakening triggers a very heavy rain, of which even Adrian is horrified because he has underestimated Kyogres power and cannot control it. Thereupon Kyogre swims to the prehistoric cave in Xeneroville in order to collect the necessary energy for a protomorphosis , which would increase his power even further and lead to the end of the world . Therefore, the player sets off into the prehistoric cave, in which the deepest point of the Hoenn region is dominated by water currents, in order to defeat Kyogre with the help of the red gem, which turns into Proto-Kyogre shortly before the start of the fight. However, the player can defeat or catch Kyogre and thus end the storm and save the world, whereupon Adrian realizes his mistakes. At this point the player also receives the Aeon Flute from Troy, with which he can use the new high-flyer feature.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby, on the other hand, the player has to defeat Team Magma, which awakens the Legendary Pokémon Groudon, and defeat or catch it in a similar way.

After the protagonist has defeated the eighth gym leader, he sets off for the Pokémon League. Shortly before that, the player fights again against Heiko, who can now use a Mega Galagladi. In the Pokémon League, in addition to the top four, the player meets the Champ Troy Trumm, which the player has met several times during the course of the game and has a mega-metagross. The player now has to defeat this to become a champ himself.

Delta episode

What is new compared to the original games is the so-called delta episode , which is an extension of the plot. Here the player has to stop a comet that is racing towards the Hoenn region, receiving support from ex-champ Troy Trumm. The delta episode begins with the fact that a huge asteroid is registered in the space center of the Hoenn region, which is moving towards the earth and will hit the center of the Hoenn region and destroy it. This is to be prevented by teleporting the comet to another location in the universe. To carry out this teleportation, however, the life energy of Pokémon, so-called endless energy , which the Devon Corporation also used for its inventions, is required. The ultimate weapon in Kalos is operated with this endless energy . To do this, the player must collect two pieces of meteorite, whereby, as in the main story, depending on the edition, Team Aqua with Wolfgang or Team Magma with Jördis tries to stop the player. In between, the mysterious character Amalia appears again and again. Her goals remain in the dark, however, but she steals keystones from all kinds of people. After the player has gathered everything for the teleportation, however, the device required for this is destroyed by her. The player then follows her to learn more about her and learns from her that she is leaving for the Sky Tower. Then the entrance to the sky tower is opened by Vasily, since only Meteorans and Xenians like Vasili are able to do so. When Amalia is persecuted, one learns that she belongs to the former. On the way to the top of the Sky Tower, Amalia tells about the story of Hoenn and how the first mega-development happened at Rayquaza. Then she wants to call Rayquaza at the top of the sky tower, which is the only Pokémon that can carry out a mega-development without a mega-stone and has a connection to the secret of mega-development. This then also appears, but does not transform into its mega form. It then takes the protagonist's meteorite, whereupon a fight against Rayquaza begins. After the player has captured Rayquaza, Amalia teaches him his special attack Zenitstürmer . To test whether the protagonist is worthy of Rayquaza's possession, Amalia then wages a Pokémon battle against the player. After the player has won this, he flies into space on Mega Rayquaza and destroys the meteorite. From this Deoxys then appears, against which the player begins a fight. After the player captures or defeats Deoxys, the Delta episode ends.

Gameplay and innovations

The gameplay is similar to that of the other Pokémon games. Many elements from Pokémon X and Y are taken over, so the 3D effects in combat, the new 3D perspective and the ability to care for your Pokémon are taken over (PokéMonAmi). The ability to customize the appearance of his character, however, was not adopted. However, like in the predecessor Pokémon X and Y, the 3D effect only works in places.

The battle house was also taken over from Pokémon X and Y and is now in the newly created battle resort. The Duel Tower still existed in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire at this position. The combat zone known from Pokémon Emerald, which included seven different combat facilities, was not taken over, it is only mentioned as a future project in the combat resort.

The competitions are also finding their way back into Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire , which last appeared in Pokémon Platinum , in which you should use different attacks with your Pokémon in front of an audience as beautifully, cute, cool, strong or clever as possible. In addition, the possibility of setting up a super-secret base returns , in which you can place decorative items and furniture, but also traps. This was last possible in Pokémon Platinum , but here the feature was called Secret Base . Human players can break into these bases and steal flags there in order to expand their own bases. In addition, trainers who are friends can be posted as guard posts. A new form of development called protomorphosis was also added, which so far only Kyogre and Groudon can carry out. Here the Pokémon regain their primeval power. Another new feature is that with the attack flyer can explore by flights Mega Latias and mega Latios the region from the air for the first time. During these flights, the player should be able to move freely. Furthermore, it is possible to sneak for the first time in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire . By sneaking you can get close to Pokémon hidden in the tall grass that otherwise flee. Such Pokémon have special attacks, which are displayed next to level and ability as soon as you approach the Pokémon. For the first time, Mega Rayquaza also allows a Pokémon to Mega Evolve without carrying a Mega Stone.

In addition, more Legendary Pokémon can be caught in the games than ever before, so you can catch 32 Legendary Pokémon in both games, including all Legendary Pokémon that were regularly catchable in generations 2 to 5. In addition, in connection with the Delta episode, there is the legendary Pokémon Deoxys , which can be caught regularly in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire for the first time.

Development and publication

The two games were announced on May 7, 2014 in a teaser published by Nintendo . Additional game content was shown at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2014.

As a result, a total of 20 new mega-shapes were announced over time. These included Sumpex, Gewaldro, Metagross, Camerupt, Tohaido, Galagladi, Firnontor, Stahlos, Brutalanda and the legendary Pokémon Rayquaza, Latias, Latios and Diancie. In addition, it became known that a special cosplay Pikachu could be costumed individually, which would then learn new attacks.

A special demo version with exclusive content was available from October 15, 2014. Mega Firnontor was available in the European versions, and Mega Steelless in the Asian versions. Both are new to Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and transferable to the main game. On November 13th, the Delta episode was also introduced, which is an expansion of the plot of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

publication
