The following list of all Pokémon - video games from Nintendo on the platform will provide an overview of the development of the series. The games in the traditional main series are named first.

In total, over 340 million units of the brand were sold worldwide.

Pokémon RPG

The main games of the Pokémon universe are role-playing games that appear in a certain scheme. First two related editions are published, which differ mainly in some of the Pokémon to be caught. This is intended to promote the interplay between the game as intended by the inventor, so that you can not only fight fights via the relevant link interface, but also have to swap Pokémon in order to own them all. An economic intention can also be assumed, as with the next step. The two editions are processed together in a new, not much different role-playing game, which appears some time later. (Exceptions are the main games of the fifth, sixth and seventh generation of games.)

Game setup

Game world

In Pokémon role-playing games, the game world lies on a connected world map. This includes cities and numbered routes that connect these cities with each other. There are also special places that are not directly integrated into the world map; you have to enter and exit them through one or more entrances. These locations are often caves or specific buildings (such as the power station or the Pokémon Mansion on Vermilion Island ). Special locations are marked on the game's world map and often have to be traversed to get from one city to the next, such as the rock tunnel that connects Azuria City with Lavandia . But there are also places that can only be entered during events.

Collecting Pokémon

The player completes his Pokémon collection primarily by catching wild Pokémon. These attack when the player moves on the routes in the tall grass; they also occur on the water, in caves and special buildings. Some Pokémon can only be found on certain routes and / or in certain places. From the gold and silver versions , which have a programmed day-and-night change, it also depends on the time of day which Pokémon the player can find.

In addition to catching Pokémon, there are some people in every game that Pokémon can be traded with. For a certain Pokémon you get a different, often rare Pokémon in exchange. Since you only need to own each Pokémon once to be registered by the Pokédex , you can give away a Pokémon without having to catch it again to complete the game.

The majority of all Pokémon are evolving. Most of the time this happens when you train them to a certain level. Pokémon of higher development levels are found less often or not at all, which is why they are usually easier to get by training your own Pokémon. Some Pokémon require special items to develop. Others only develop when they are swapped between two versions of Pokémon using the Link Cable or wireless connection . This can vary which items the Pokémon carry.

After all, the so-called baby Pokémon have been around since the gold and silver versions . They are precursors to other Pokémon (not all Pokémon have this level), and they can be obtained by giving two Pokémon of different sexes to a Pokémon Boarding house. Since it is often difficult to capture two compatible Pokémon, you can alternatively hand in any Pokémon with a Ditto , which is able to replace the corresponding partner due to its neutral gender. After a certain time, the protagonist receives an egg from which a Pokémon hatches.

Battle mode

The game switches to battle mode as soon as the player is attacked by a wild Pokémon or challenged by a trainer. In battles against trainers, the player must try to use his Pokémon to defeat all of the opposing Pokémon, whereby the player and the opponent can carry a maximum of six Pokémon with them. With wild Pokémon you also have the option of catching the Pokémon with one of the various Poké Balls, or of fleeing from it. When fighting in the safari zone , on the other hand, you only have the option of throwing mud at the Pokémon or using bait and catching it with the ready-made safari balls.

The combat mode is turn-based. Usually only one Pokémon is fought, but newer games also offer the option of fighting with two or - since the Black and White editions - three Pokémon at the same time. The Pokémon take turns making an attack; alternatively, an item can be used or the active Pokémon can be exchanged. You win a fight when you have defeated all of the opposing Pokémon and have at least one Pokémon ready to fight. At the end of the fight you return to normal game mode.

Playing

Characteristic of the Pokémon role-playing games is that the end credits including the insertion of "The End" or the like are shown several times, although the game continues if you defeat all opponents of the Pokémon League (in gold / silver / crystal, as well as their new versions Golden Edition HeartGold and Silver Edition SoulSilver a second time if you defeat the trainer red ). Nevertheless, the game can be continued because you can train the Pokémon and compete against friends via a link cable, a wireless adapter or the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection .

  • “Pokémon Mystery Dungeon” was released with “Team Blue” for the Nintendo DS as well as with “Team Red” for the slightly older Game Boy Advance. While the assumption is that the "Team Red" is technically weaker, the only disadvantage is that the second screen of the Nintendo DS cannot be used due to the hardware of the Gameboy Advance. A connection of the two games (via the two interfaces for Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS games on the Nintendo DS) enables extras to be activated. However, both editions are almost identical, which is why, according to Nintendo, you should prefer the version that you can play (Team Blue if you own a DS, Team Red if you own a Game Boy Advance or Game Boy Advance SP).
  • The two games are based on the "Mystery Dungeon Series" (不 思議 の ダ ン ジ ョ ン, Fushigi no Danjon ) by the manufacturer Chunsoft , in which many other series have already appeared, including Dragon Quest from Enix , Square Enix or Final Fantasy (the games refer to the figure "Chocobo", a bird-like creature that is a kind of mascot in the series).

The player starts the game without a job, but you are soon appointed a ranger and from now on you have the task of taming wild Pokémon and then releasing them again. There are four big cities in Fiore: Ringstadt, Herbstenau, Sommerlingen and Frostberg. A further, mostly larger part is linked to each of these cities: the forest at Ringstadt, the cave at Herbstenau, the jungle at Sommerlingen and the mountain (or temple) of Fiore at Frostberg. All four cities are connected to each other; be it through underground tunnels or swimming stretches. A total of ten missions have to be completed to complete the main story, followed by three extra missions, but there is no reward for completing them. After these three extra missions you can do another four special missions in which you have to catch Deoxys, Celebi and Mew. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2

  • The sequel Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: "Explorers of Time" & "Explorers of Darkness" is based on the first part of the game, but this time the player can also see and catch the Pokémon from the Diamond and Pearl Edition games. As in the first part, the player is not a trainer, but a Pokémon, and has the task of saving other Pokémon or catching crooks, but this time not in a rescue team, but in an "exploration team". The main plot consists of preventing the reptain, initially mistaken for a crook, from stealing the gears of time, the loss of which means that time stops in their surroundings. Ultimately, with the help of the gears of time, the collapse of the time tower is prevented, which would have paralyzed the whole planet.
