Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are video games from the Pokémon series that are assigned to the role-playing genre. The games were released worldwide for the Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019 . They were developed by Game Freak , published by The Pokémon Company , and distributed by Nintendo . The games are assigned to the eighth generation of the main Pokémon series and contain both a new region and new Pokémon.

Gameplay

In Pokémon Sword and Shield , the player steers the protagonist through the fictional region "Galar", which is based on the island of Great Britain . The player catches and trains the beings native to the world, called Pokémon, and uses them in the fight against other Pokémon. As usual with the Pokémon franchise, there are two main goals to be achieved: defeating the Champ of the Galar region and completing the Pokédex by catching all Pokémon.

New to Pokémon Sword and Shield is "Dynamaximization," an ability that Pokémon can use to grow in size and strength. During the maximum three rounds of Dynamaximization, all attacks of a Pokémon are converted into Dynamax attacks. Another innovation in the games is the nature zone, an extensive area in the Galar region that connects several cities and in which different Pokémon can be found. In the natural zone, the player can take part in a Dyna Raid with three other trainers, in which the players must defeat a Dynamax Pokémon together.

Development and publication

In June 2017 during E3 , one of the largest game fairs worldwide, Game Freak announced that a main series Pokémon game was in development for the Nintendo Switch, but that it would take over a year to appear. Following the announcement of Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! On May 30, 2018, The Pokémon Company announced that since Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! take over many game mechanics from the mobile game Pokémon Go , another Pokémon game will appear in the second half of 2019, which should again be more based on its predecessors. This was the game that was hinted at at E3 2017.

Pokémon Sword and Shield were first introduced during a Pokémon Direct on February 27, 2019. The first gameplay, the new region, the first Pokémon and the logos were shown. The only mentioned release date was the end of 2019. In another Pokémon Direct on June 5, 2019, shortly before E3 2019, further details about the games were announced, such as the two legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta, which will adorn the game covers, new Pokémon, and the nature zone. In addition, November 15, 2019 has been announced as the release date.

The two versions were able to sell more than 6 million copies together a few days after the release, despite the criticism and controversy in advance.

According to the December 31, 2019 financial report, Pokémon Sword and Shield have sold a total of 16.06 million times.

In a Pokémon Direct presentation on January 9, 2020, Game Freak announced the Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass and the Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass. These include "The Isle of Armor" with the theme of growth and "The Snow Lands of the Crown" with the theme of exploration. It was also announced that with the expansions, around 200 more Pokémon from previous games, as well as some completely new Pokémon, will be added. "The Isle of Armor" is expected to appear on June 17th, while the publication of "Die Schneelande der Krone" is planned for autumn.
