Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are video games from the Pokémon series that belong to the role-playing game genre. The games were released simultaneously in Europe on November 23, 2016 and in the rest of the world on November 18, 2016, for Nintendo 3DS . They were developed by Game Freak , published by The Pokémon Company , and distributed by Nintendo . Together with Pokémon, they form Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon , as well as Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! the 7th generation of the Pokémon role-playing game series .

Gameplay

In Pokémon Sun and Moon , the player controls the protagonist from a bird's eye view through the fictional region "Alola", which is based on the Pacific island chain of Hawaii . The player catches and trains the beings native to the world, called Pokémon, and uses them in the fight against other Pokémon. As usual for the Pokémon series, there are two main goals to be achieved: defeating the Pokémon League, consisting of four strong trainers from each region, and completing the Pokédex by catching all Pokémon.

The player has to catch wild Pokémon that happen to be found in the area and can train them by fighting other Pokémon. He can then have up to six captured Pokémon compete in a turn-based combat system against other characters, so-called trainers, who also use captured Pokémon. The story takes place in the Alola region, which consists of four natural and one artificial island. On each of the four islands he has to compete against the "island king" to gain access to the Pokémon League. There he has to defeat the top four to get the title of "Pokémon League Champ". He has to defend this title for the first time in the Pokémon series against challengers.

Pokémon Sun and Moon differ in the time in the game world, among other things: the time in Pokémon Sun is taken from the time set on the console, while in Pokémon Moon the time is offset by twelve hours. In addition, the games differ in the Pokémon they can find: Some Pokémon can only be found in one of the two editions and must be transferred to the other edition by swapping.

The games were released simultaneously worldwide on November 17, 2017 for Nintendo 3DS . They were developed by Game Freak , published by The Pokémon Company , and distributed by Nintendo .

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were mostly developed by younger developers at Game Freak, while most of the more experienced developers were busy developing a Pokémon game for the Nintendo Switch . Pokémon Sun and Moon were widely praised by critics: The games on Metacritic achieved an aggregate rating of 87%.

Above all, the game's too low level of difficulty was criticized. Critics praised the game for the beautifully designed game world, the closer connection to your own Pokémon and many useful innovations compared to its predecessors.

“Every city and every island has its own unique style and is convincing all along the line. In the end, however, I could hardly decide who to take on my team, now that I no longer have to rely on VMs. [...] Yes, overall it wasn't very difficult. But I could enjoy it all the more, after all, I hardly had to get upset about stupid opponents and verbally abuse them. "

- Laureen Eggmann in PC Games (rating: 9/10)

"The feeling of confirmation that you have created and trained your team so well that you could even defeat the strongest trainer in the region and later the entire top 4 [..] is missing from Pokémon Sun & Moon, as the strongest captains and yourself the island kings can be defeated without great effort. While at the beginning I tried really hard with training and creating the move set, I had to realize in the course of the game that all the effort was in vain. Despite the disappointment, the practical innovations such as the Pokémobil, the display of the effectiveness and above all the strategic four-man battle, Battle Royal, are convincing. "
