The GamePro (including GP or G + ) is a monthly German-language video games magazine of the French publishing Webedia . It is a publication specializing in game consoles and the sister magazine of the PC game magazine GameStar , from whose editorial team it emerged. The magazine originally published by IDG publisher bears the same name as a game magazine that was also published by IDG in the USA between 1989 and 2011, but which was editorially independent and also covered PC games. GamePro appears monthly, usually on the first Wednesday of the previous month, and has around 110 pages per issue, depending primarily on the number of games currently published. The editorial office is based in Munich.

history

The first German-language magazine called Gamepro was published in 9/1994. The magazine, published under license from MVL Verlag as Gamepro (or GAMEPRO written on the cover), was a multi- platform addition to its sister formats Gamers and Total! thought that only reported about Sega and Nintendo . In addition to console games, Gamepro also dealt with games for PCs to a small extent. The editorial team consisted of faces already well-known in the industry such as Julian Eggebrecht, Hans-Joachim Amann, Klaus-Dieter Hartwig and the former Sega European champion Reza Abdolali. The magazine was discontinued after only 14 issues with the 11/1995 issue when the publisher filed for bankruptcy.

The second German version of GamePro, this time self-published by IDG, started as a special issue of the sister magazine GameStar . The first edition 10_2002 appeared as an independent magazine after only ten weeks of development on September 1st, 2002 with Gunnar Lott as editor-in-chief. A DVD has been included with the magazine since this edition .

The magazine was revised in the 01/2007 and 06/2010 editions, for example the layout and the rating system were changed. The current editorial team consists of editor-in-chief Heiko Klinge and other editors who work for Gamestar and GamePro.

A special edition of GamePro appeared with issue 12/2011. This had a completely gold cover for the title story and test by Skyward Sword . The writing "GamePro" was also gold on the (usual) blue background. In contrast to other magazines of this genre , in which special editions appear more frequently, this was the first and so far only special design change of the cover since the issue of the issue.

On April 29, 2015 IDG Entertainment Media GmbH was sold by the parent company IDG to the French company Webedia. The reason is a complete reorientation on the part of the parent company IDG, which now wants to specialize in the IT area and will therefore sell its gaming areas worldwide.

Scoring system

Right from the start, GamePro used the percentage system established in Germany for video and computer game magazines.

A simple rating system has been used for the game tests since the beginning. For the areas

  • graphic
  • Sound
  • service
  • Multiplayer
  • the atmosphere

a rating in the form of 0 to 100 points was given. An overall rating, named in the GamePro as fun, was awarded independently of the individual ratings.

A new rating system was introduced in the 01/2007 edition. For the areas

  • graphic
  • Sound
  • Game design
  • service
  • Story / game world
  • scope

a rating of 0 to 10 points was then awarded. Four editors also rated the game from 0 to 10 points. The overall rating, which was given in percent, was calculated from all individual ratings. The multiplayer rating, on the other hand, was removed from the overall rating box and relocated to a separate rating box that was not directly included in the overall rating.

Another rating system was introduced again in the 06/2010 edition. The overall rating was reverted to the original rating method in which the editors gave the total number of points. Graphics, sound and multiplayer are still rated between 0 and 10 points (all other areas have been omitted), but these are irrelevant for the overall rating.

Awards

Since the introduction of the GamePro, awards have been given to games when they reach a certain overall rating. With an overall rating of 85 percent or more, the game receives a GamePro Gold Award. Play a platinum award with a rating of 90 percent or more.

High scores

The games Grand Theft Auto V (2013) for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 for the PS4 Pro achieved the highest rating in the 18-year history of the magazine with 97% each.

In addition, the titles The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for GameCube (2006) and Wii (2007), God of War II for PlayStation 2 (2007) and GTA IV (2008), Red Dead Redemption (2010), Batman: Arkham City (2011) for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and Super Mario Odyssey (2017) each 95%. This is followed by the GameCube version of Resident Evil 4 (2005), Super Mario Galaxy (2007) and Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010) for Wii, as well as Uncharted 3 (2011) and Killzone 3 for PlayStation 3 with 94% each.

In addition, every year the readers of the GamePro vote for the best game of the past year. The games are then awarded the highest award “(Console) Game of the Year”. In addition to the highest award, there are other awards that change slightly every year. Since 2007 the awards have been called GameStars . In 2011, a closed event took place for the first time for the awards ceremony Games of the Year 2010 together with the sister magazine GameStar.

The games of the year are listed below :
