Red Dead Redemption is the successor to Red Dead Revolver, the second Red Dead game and at the same time the start of its own series.

In October 2018, a successor appeared with Red Dead Redemption 2 .

action

Red Dead Redemption takes place in 1911 towards the end of the Wild West in the American - Mexican border area. The protagonist John Marston arrives in the small desert town of Armadillo in the (fictional) American state "New Austin". In nearby Fort Mercer he wants to take out an outlaw named Bill Williamson. The action fails; Marston is shot and lies unconscious on the side of the road. He is rescued by Bonnie MacFarlane, who happens to be passing by, and looked after at MacFarlane's ranch. This is where the prologue ends and the main story begins.

In the course of the main plot, the prehistory is gradually revealed: Marston was an outlaw who, together with Bill Williamson, committed crimes in the gang of Dutch van der Linde. In a failed robbery, gang members left Marston dying. He then settled with his wife Abigail, a former prostitute, and their son Jack in West Elizabeth and became a farmer. Shortly thereafter, agents from a federal agency called " Bureau " kidnapped Marston's wife and son and blackmailed him into arresting or killing his former comrades.

After some time in and around Armadillo and MacFarlane's ranch, Marston was able to secure the help of several people with whom he finally succeeded in digging up Fort Mercer. Williamson, however, has previously fled to Mexico, where Marston follows him.

Once there, in exchange for help in the search for Bill Williamson, Marston supports the tyrannical local government by preventing acts of sabotage by Mexican rebels. Marston learns that Bill Williamson is hiding with Javier Escuella, another former gang member. Looking for clues as to their hiding place, Marston does jobs for the government and later, after it becomes clear that he was only used by the government and in the end almost killed, for the rebels. After all, Marston is instrumental in the overthrow of the local and corrupt Mexican ruler Colonel Allende, in the course of which he can kill his former gang members Williamson and Escuella. Marston now believes to have done the job of the American federal agency and thereby to get his family back. He makes his way to the town of Blackwater, but instead of seeing his family again, Marston is now forced to kill Dutch van der Linde. Marston confronts Dutch van der Linde in an attack on the mountain fortress; However, van der Linde chooses suicide by jumping into the ravine before Marston can shoot him. Marston is now allowed to go back to his family and start a new life as a farmer.

However, after a few months on the farm, when Marston's life finally seemed to normalize, federal agents appear with soldiers to kill him - the last living member of the gang. After John has brought his wife and son to safety, he surrenders and dies, hit by several bullets, alone.

From here on, the player takes on the role of John's son Jack. It was three years after John was buried, and Jack's mother also died. Jack buries her next to his father on the ranch. Jack has matured into a man and is in no way inferior to his late father. At Blackwater train station, he learns from a government official that Edgar Ross, who once ordered the murder of John Marston, has retired and lives in a quiet place with his wife. Jack eventually finds Edgar Ross and kills him in one final duel. Now that he has avenged his father, Jack looks confused at his weapon: Like his father, he has become an outlaw, which he wanted to prevent at all costs. Jack secures his gun and walks away. What will become of him is unclear.

Game principle and technology

The game consists on the one hand of main missions, which advance the plot, and the so-called side missions. Similar to the GTA series, it is up to the player in which order and at what time to play the missions. The player must go to each mission location in order to be able to complete them. The game follows the principle of open world gameplay from a third-person perspective . Here Rockstar Games offers the player a freely accessible landscape, which the protagonist can explore freely on foot, on horseback, by carriage or by train. The game card refers to different environments, including steppes, deserts, coniferous forests, high and snow-covered mountains, etc. The focus of this, unlike the GTA series, is on natural, largely undeveloped surroundings. However, the game environment offers locations and settlements in which the player can interact with computer-controlled characters (play, trade, etc.). In addition to the single player mode, Red Dead Redemption also offers the multiplayer mode, in which the environment can be explored with human players connected via the Internet (e.g. hunting). The title offers a diverse selection of animals that John Marston can hunt. Killed animals can be skinned and the skins sold at dealers. Depending on the area in which the player is staying, different animal species live, including: a. Bison , grizzly bears and wolves . Just like the game GTA 4 , the game was provided with the animation engine Euphoria . The movement sequences are displayed more realistically.

struggle

Gun exchanges and car chases are main parts of the game. The player can take cover behind various objects, aim at people, fire blindly or purposefully. Various weapons are available to the player in Red Dead Redemption . These include shotguns , sniper rifles, cannons , Gatling rifles , revolvers , pistols, knives , explosives , Molotov cocktails or a lasso . In combat, John Marston can take out opponents with the aiming device "Dead-Eye". This allows the player to slow down the speed of the game for a short time in order to then place one or more target points on one or more opponents. Marked targets are then automatically targeted.

Multiplayer

In Red Dead Redemption , the player can play on the Internet with up to 16 players per round, such as deathmatch , snap the bag or capture the flag . There is also a so-called Freeroam mode in which the player can freely explore the vast world of Red Dead Redemption alone or with friends . In this game mode, players can form clans and fight in alliance against other clans, hunt with them or go on a journey of exploration.
