Rockstar Advanced Game Engine

The Rockstar Advanced Game Engine ( RAGE ) is one of Rockstar San Diego , developed in cooperation with developers of other Rockstar studios game engine .

RAGE was developed in response to the acquisition of Criterion Games by Electronic Arts (EA). So far, the Rockstar studios, for example in the GTA III trilogy, used the engine RenderWare developed by Criterion . Its use has been discontinued due to concerns about the use of the information EA would obtain by licensing the RenderWare engine. Instead, an in-house development should be created for new projects.

RAGE was used for the first time in the Xbox 360 game Rockstar Games presented table tennis , which was later ported to the Wii including the engine . The engine was also used in the games Grand Theft Auto IV ( PS3 , X360, PC) and Midnight Club: Los Angeles (PS3, Xbox 360). Contrary to claims to the contrary, the PlayStation Portable offshoots of the GTA series and Midnight Club: LA Remix are not based on RAGE, but use an in-house development by Rockstar Leeds and Rockstar London .

Based on the graphical presentation of table tennis , the engine has received very good reviews. In particular, the detailed animated faces were often rated positively.

Various third-party middleware has been integrated into RAGE , including the character animation engine Euphoria , the physics engine Bullet and the SpeedTree development environment, which is used to display realistic trees .
