Max Payne 3 is a video game from developer and publisher Rockstar Games for Windows , macOS , Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 . The third-person shooter released in Germany on May 18, 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and on June 1, 2012 for the PC as well as on June 20, 2013 as a download for OS X . The action game with neo-noir storyline is the sequel to Max Payne (2001) and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (2003) and continues the story of the eponymous antihero , but the Finnish studio was no longer responsible for the development Remedy Entertainment .

action

As in the previous games, the player takes on the role of the eponymous protagonist Max Payne, eight years after the events in Max Payne 2 . Because of his relationship with the hit man Mona Sax, Max had to quit his job with the New York Police Department and left town to settle in Hoboken, New Jersey . After the severely alcoholic and pill addict ex-police officer kills the son of a local mafia godfather, he and his police friend Raul Passos leave the USA with him for São Paulo to try a new start as a bodyguard. There he works for the influential Branco family, consisting of the businessman Rodrigo Branco, the politician Victor and the party-goer Marcelo. Among other things, Max is tasked with protecting Rodrigo's wife Fabiana.

As in the predecessors, the plot works several times with time leaps. The game begins as soon as Max arrives at his new apartment in São Paulo and tells various key events, such as the incident in Hoboken and other story-related events, in multiple flashbacks during the course of the game. Compared to its predecessor, the cutscenes are in comic form.

During an attack on a private Brancos party, members of the street gang “Comando Sombra” tried to kidnap Fabiana, but Max prevented them from doing so for the time being. In another robbery in a nightclub, they finally manage to bring Fabiana under their control. A planned ransom delivery in the football stadium fails due to the appearance of a paramilitary group called "Crachá Preto" who takes the money, as does a subsequent rescue attempt in which the gangsters escape with their hostage. Back on the Brancos estate, Max and Passos want to consult with Rodrigo Branco, his brother Victor and the head of the special police unit Unidade de Forças Especiais (UFE) Armando Becker. But the facility is attacked by a Crachá Preto killer squad. Rodrigo Branco is killed and the facility is destroyed by a bomb explosion. Max escapes and finds out that the attack was originally aimed at him and that Fabiana is being held captive in the city's favelas .

Max feels responsible for everything that happened to the Brancos. He decides to refrain from alcohol and make another attempt to rescue Fabiana. Resident police detective Wilson Da Silva explains that Rodrigo Branco's Crachá Preto has been hired for illegal operations on several occasions. Da Silva continues to believe that both UFE and Rodrigo's brother Victor are linked to the recent events. On his search in the favelas, Max finally discovers Fabiana as well as her sister Giovanna (also Passos' friend) and Marcelo Branco. Giovanna and Marcelo went to the favela independently, in the hope of being able to release Fabiana from the gang. But Comando Sombra leader Serrano shoots Fabiana and flees with the two remaining hostages. While Max takes up the chase, the UFE attacks the favela. Max witnesses how the UFE surrenders a number of prisoners to the Crachá Preto for a fee. Finally, Max finds Marcelo and Giovanna, who are now in the hands of the deputy Crachá Preto leader Milo Rego. However, he has to watch as Marcelo is cruelly killed by him. Max then kills Rego and saves Giovanna. Later Passos shows up to pick her up by helicopter, but he escapes with Giovanna and leaves Max, who is rescued shortly afterwards by Wilson Da Silva.

After a tip from Da Silva, Max breaks into a dilapidated hotel and discovers that the Hotel Crachá Preto serves as the base for a criminal organ smuggling network. He also learns that the organization pays the UFE to arrest these people in the favelas and then hand them over for organ removal. Soon after, Payne lays explosives to destroy the entire complex. He is almost shot by Crachá Preto leader Álvaro Neves, but is saved by Raul Passos, who a short time later leaves town with pregnant Giovanna. Meanwhile, Da Silva finds out that Armando Becker and Victor Branco are actually behind everything. He asks Max to take care of it, as he sees no way to legally arrest both of them due to severe corruption.

Max therefore fights his way through the UFE headquarters and finds out that Becker and the UFE are behind the murder of Rodrigo Branco: Becker's assistant, a man named Bachmeyer, had hidden in Rodrigo's office before the Crachá Preto attacked the system and shot him shortly afterwards. Victor, whom Max tracks down with Becker shortly afterwards, explains to Max that he wanted his brother to give him more money for his election campaign. He therefore ordered Crachá Preto to interrupt the ransom delivery in the football stadium. The money was used to finance the illegal organ removal, the profits of which were used to finance Victor's election campaign. Victor and Becker flee to the airport, pursued by Max, in order to escape from São Paulo in Rodrigo's private jet. Becker suffers severe burns in the fight with Max, from which he dies shortly afterwards. With the help of Wilson Da Silva, Max then also destroys Branco's jet, but spares Victor so that he can be tried.

A week later, Max Payne saw the latest news on television on Bahia Beach, Brazil. There he learns that the UFE was disbanded because of its links to the illegal organ trade and that Victor Branco was found hanged in his cell. It remains unclear whether this was suicide. In the final scene of the game, Max is seen enjoying his vacation in Bahia, determined to get on with his life.

Gameplay

The player controls his character directly from a third-person perspective through largely linear levels. The bullet time typical of the series, in which the game is slowed down considerably and the time can be used to better target the opponent, is also the defining stylistic feature of the fights for the third part. Max can jump at the touch of a button. With the help of a cover system, Max can be instructed to seek protection from enemy attacks behind walls and objects.

For the first time in series history, Max Payne 3 has a multiplayer mode for a maximum of 16 players. In addition to the Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch variants, there was a Gang Wars variant in which two teams of players compete against each other in five rounds. The game variant changes every round and depends on the course of the preliminary round. Only the crucial fifth round is set as a team death match, for which the teams can develop advantages in the four rounds. In the so-called Paynekiller mode, one player takes on the role of Max Payne and one of Raul Passos. Both compete against the rest of the players. The distribution of roles changes as soon as it is possible to eliminate one of the two. The player who succeeded in shooting then takes on the role of Payne or Passos.

development

Max Payne 3 was announced in March 2009 with a Winter 2009 release period. Until the actual release of the console version of the game in May and the planned release of the computer version in June 2012, the game was postponed several times. The Rockstar studio in Vancouver was primarily responsible for the development work. The work was supported by Rockstar London, Rockstar New England and Rockstar Toronto. The game uses the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE) developed by Rockstar itself . For the physics calculations, Natural Motions Euphoria engine was licensed, which was used to reproduce the character's movements, for example when shot or jump, and to calculate the destruction of objects.

The soundtrack for the game was composed by the American noise rock band Health .

Max Payne 3 received mostly excellent reviews. Carsten Görig from “ Spiegel ” compared the staging of the game with the films City of God and Tropa de Elite . Occasionally, however , Max Payne 3 was also received cautiously. David Hugendick from Die Zeit complained, for example, that the developers had limited themselves too much to staging orgies of violence. Compared to other rock star productions like GTA 4 or Red Dead Redemption, the game lacks any subtlety or narrative ambition. He also criticized the strictly linear game structure and described it as anachronistic to the open-world solutions of the comparison games. In Take-Two's 2012 annual report dated May 22, 2012, the company reported sales of three million copies of the game for Xbox 360 and PS3. According to Take2's information in the first quarterly report for the 2013 financial year, sales figures worldwide fell short of expectations. In the US, only 440,000 units were sold in the first month of sales, but the forecast was 600,000. The press suspected the timely release of Blizzard's bestseller Diablo III (3.5 million copies sold on the first day of sale) on May 15, 2012 as the reason for the sluggish sales of Max Payne 3 .
