The Edge ( stylized spelling : EDGE ) is an English-language magazine that deals with video games . It has been published by the British Future Publishing Verlag since August 19, 1993 every four weeks (13 issues per year) mainly in Great Britain . A well-known motto of the EDGE is: “It's not for everyone” (“It is not for everyone”).

concept

The EDGE reports on computer games on various platforms. Games for consoles (also for portable models, so-called handhelds ) and for the PC are covered. A striking detail of the magazine is that under the respective articles there is not the name of the editor, but always an E , the EDGE logo. While in many other game magazines the individual editors and authors come to the fore through portraits and opinion boxes, the names of the EDGE employees only appear in the imprint. The articles are always described from the " EDGE perspective" ("EDGE asked ..."). Outside of this perspective, various columnists from the professional world write .

Another principle is the rating of games on a scale from one to ten, whereby the respective ratings are known to be relatively strict. So the top grade of 10 has been awarded for the following games:

All in all, the evaluation by points only plays a small role and is deliberately kept inconspicuous in the layout : the evaluation only appears in the form of a single number at the end of the text.

Special emphasis is also placed on the peculiar design and layout, which, with its strikingly reserved and simple style, stands out in some cases strongly from other magazines, which are designed more towards younger target groups. The respective cover is of great importance here and is almost always free of big headlines. In the localized edition for Germany, however, this is handled differently. There you can sometimes find a lot of text elements above the cover image. These are located (in the English original) on a removable film in which the magazine is shrink-wrapped.

With a few exceptions, no data carriers such as CDs or DVDs are usually included.

history

Parts of the EDGE were also distributed in the USA under the name Next Generation . From issue 155 (November 2005) to July 2007, there was also a German translation published by Computec Media . However, the German translation left a lot to be desired in many places, and in some places the original English was clearly recognized.

In January 2007, the German EDGE magazine , which previously appeared monthly, was changed to a bi-monthly publication. In July 2007, the German Computec publishing house suddenly discontinued the magazine for “strategic reasons”. Instead, subscribers automatically received PlayZone , a magazine for Sony game consoles from the publisher, but could cancel by phone.
