The Last of Us is an action-adventure and survival horror - computer game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment , which on 14 June 2013 exclusively for Sony's PlayStation 3 has been released. The game was officially presented at the Spike Video Game Awards on December 10, 2011. In July 2014, a remastered version for the PlayStation 4 was released .

The game is about two survivors: the adult Texan Joel (spoken by Troy Baker in English ) and the young Ellie ( Ashley Johnson ) who roam the post-apocalyptic United States together . Most people in this scenario have succumbed to infection with a fungus similar to Ophiocordyceps unilateralis , which attacks their brains and turns them into aggressive mutants whose bodies deteriorate as the infection progresses.

Within three weeks, 3.4 million copies of the game were sold worldwide. In 2016 the successor The Last of Us Part II was announced. This sequel finally appeared on June 19, 2020.

Gameplay

The Last of Us uses a third-person perspective and lets the player control Joel and partly Ellie, while any companions of the respective character are controlled by the AI . The game includes both firearm fights and hand-to-hand combat and a cover system. The player must try to fend off infected people - people infected by the mutated Ophiocordyceps unilateralis fungus - as well as survivors - people who are not infected, but are in most cases hostile to others. The game is intended to give the impression of what people are capable of in the face of a collapsing civilization without order and care, with the pure urge to survive. The Last of Us is not an open world game , but it offers generous levels, some of which give this impression.

An important part of the gameplay is making medicits and weapons. To do this, different objects are collected and later combined with one another. For example, Molotov cocktails and first aid bandages can be made from rags and alcohol .

According to the developer, the total playing time of the single player mode is 12 to 16 hours.

In the multiplayer mode, The Last of Us builds on a meta-story from the universe of the campaign with the playable factions Fireflies and Hunter , whereby the game principle corresponds in principle to that of the single player mode. With four-on-four battles and comparatively small maps, it is clearly differentiated from other multiplayer modes in which a maximum of 64 players can be involved.

structure

The infected as well as the people can be divided into different groups.

Infected

Infected people are infected with the Cordyceps fungus. It is easy to get infected by inhaling the spores of the fungus or by being bitten by an infected person.

Stages of infection

1st stage: A runner is a newly infected person after the 2-day incubation period . The infected lose their consciousness and turn into aggressive “ zombies ” that are sensitive to noise and hunt people. Runners are fast and they usually appear in groups.

2nd level: Stalkers are loners who silently ambush unsuspecting people. Stalkers already have fungal growths on their heads and bodies due to the infection that settles in the brain and are also stronger than runners due to the infection.

3rd stage: Clickers are stray infected people whose sensory organs have already been completely overgrown by the fungus. They orient themselves with echolocation similar to bats. The echolocation creates a loud click from the extremely noise-sensitive creatures. They are much stronger than runners, apparently due to the infection. Infected people acquire this level of infection after years of infection.

4th level: Bloaters have been infected since the outbreak and are therefore less common. Their body is completely covered with huge plates of mushrooms, which are excellent protection from injuries, but are also heavy, so they are rather slow. They fire around with exploding spore projectiles and tear open the jaws of their victims if you get too close instead of biting them.

People

People are divided, they are almost a greater threat than the comparatively predictable infected people.

  • The military has taken power and is trying to maintain order within the quarantine zones through repression. Outside the zones and during the closing times, people are shot without regard to people.
  • The Fireflies rebel group was formed because they believe the military’s methods are wrong, since the military is killing everyone outside of the quarantine zones to raid their supplies and it is illegal to be there. The Fireflies are anxious to find a vaccination against the Cordyceps and thus to secure the existence of mankind, whereby they wage a constant guerrilla war against the military. They were brutally persecuted and almost exterminated by the military.
  • The people in the quarantine zones don't have much to lose. They eke out their existence with too little food. People are regularly recruited for the field service.
  • Hunters are marauding groups that make their way beyond quarantine zones and shoot at all strangers. Some of them are cannibals who just make ends meet.

action

Itinerary of the main characters in the game

Main game

The plot of The Last of Us plays mainly in 2033, two decades after a mutated Cordyceps has -Pilz infected 60 percent of the world's population and transformed into changing cannibals. After the government collapsed, the military controlled the quarantine areas where most of the survivors lived . The group of Fireflies rejects the violent and totalitarian police state and leads a guerrilla war against the US military.

Joel, who lost his 12-year-old daughter Sarah to a gunshot by a soldier when the infection broke out, is a black marketeer in the Boston quarantine zone . By chance he comes across the leader of the Fireflies, who asks him and his companion Tess to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out of the quarantine zone and bring her to a hiding place of the Fireflies. While they are on the run they are caught by soldiers and it turns out that Ellie is infected. At the last second they manage to overwhelm the soldiers. Ellie explains that the bite on her arm is three weeks old and that she has developed immunity. Only the Fireflies can potentially create a cure. Joel is then convinced by Tess to do her job at all costs. When they arrive at the Firefly base, however, all the Fireflies have already been murdered by the military. Tess, who was recently bitten by an infected person, enables Joel and Ellie to escape by sacrificing herself in a fight with the soldiers.

Joel and Ellie now follow the clues about the whereabouts of the remaining Fireflies, who are apparently dead. On her journey across the USA, there are always dangerous clashes with hunters and infected people, in which Joel is ultimately critically injured and Ellie can only barely bring him to safety. In the winter months, Ellie now has to go alone in search of food and medicine. While hunting a deer, she runs into a hunter. Both are ambushed and can only survive together in the fight against infected people. She manages to get medicine for the injured Joel. The hunter recognized Ellie, however, as she and Joel had previously killed numerous hunters in a nearby town. They raid their hiding place. While trying to lure the attackers away, Ellie is captured. Joel, who has since recovered from the medication, can take up the chase and rescue Ellie.

In the spring of 2034, Ellie and Joel finally meet the Fireflies, who are holed up in a hospital in Salt Lake City. Because the fungus grows in the host's brain, Ellie would not survive the necessary surgery to test her immunity. Joel decides to free Ellie from the operating room and shoots the leader of the Fireflies while trying to escape.

Both manage to escape from the hospital. On the way out of town, Ellie, who was under anesthesia, asks why the Fireflies let them go. Joel lies to Ellie and claims that there are many immune carriers of infection, but that the manufacture of an active ingredient is not possible. The main game ends when you arrive in Jacksonville, where Joel's brother lives in a relatively safe community.

During the campaign, the player will find various letters, photos, audio recordings and newspaper articles that tell a more detailed background story.

Left Behind

The expansion tells the story behind the main game and the survival of Ellie and the injured Joel in winter. Both narrative strands alternate in short episodes.

Ellie is woken up one night by her friend Riley, who had previously disappeared for a long time and has since joined the Fireflies. Riley leads Ellie to an abandoned mall to use her to start up a working generator. After browsing a costume store, they stumble upon the power pack and can turn on electricity for the entire mall. To their amazement, an old children's carousel and a photo machine are still functional. Trying to get a slot machine going also fails, so Riley captivates Ellie's imagination with her description of a fight game . When the two talk about the threatened farewell, an argument breaks out. Riley runs away from Ellie and Ellie runs after her. After they make up again, Ellie begs Riley to stay. Riley agrees and they both kiss. As they dance to loud music for joy, they are surprised by infected people and have to flee. On the run, both Ellie and Riley are bitten by infected people. They are then faced with two options: suicide by revolver or waiting for the infection to occur. After Ellie desperately asks about a possible third option, they decide on the second.

In the second part of the plot, Ellie searches a mall where Joel is immobilized in one of the shops. He was previously seriously injured in the course of the nearby main game. Ellie's attempt to find a first aid kit in a pharmacy is unsuccessful. Their way leads them through flooded cellars that are populated by infected people. On the other hand, she has more luck in a crashed military helicopter. When she wants to return to Joel with the medical kit, she is caught by hunters and has to fight her way through. In doing so, she can use infectious people who are approaching in her favor. When she finally wants to open the door to Joel's hiding place, she is attacked again and has to defend herself one more time. This part of the story ends with her getting on her horse and pulling Joel behind her on a stretcher.

announcement

The game was first mentioned in the form of a billboard in Times Square , prior to the Spike Video Game Awards on November 29, 2011, with the slogan "a [PlayStation 3] exclusive you won't believe". First teaser showed a post apocalyptic event, riots, an epidemic , quarantine and violence, and a section from the BBC - television series Planet Earth . This shows an ant with an Ophiocordyceps unilateralis infection, a fungal parasite that usually attacks and kills insects. On December 9, 2011, players from Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception discovered a hidden Easter Egg as a newspaper headline "Scientists are still struggling to understand deadly fungus" a reference to the said teaser. At the Spike Video Game Awards, Sony officially unveiled The Last of Us , a new game from Naughty Dog developed by a previously unknown team of 80. A trailer from game scenes showed a man and a teenage girl fending off other survivors and beings overgrown by fungi.

Shortly after the launch, Naughty Dog Co-President Evan Wells posted more information about The Last of Us on the official PlayStation Blog :

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that fuses survival and action elements to tell a character-driven story of a modern plague that is decimating humanity. Nature is increasingly overlaying civilization, forcing the last survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave youngster but ahead of her age, must work together to survive their journey through what remains of the United States. "

- Evan Wells : PlayStation Blog

The announcement confirmed that the new project would be led by studio game director Bruce Straley. Former lead designer of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West , Mark Richard Davies, also worked on the game for Naughty Dog. After Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was released in 2009, some of the development team formed a new team for The Last of Us while the others worked on Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception . For the first time, two different Naughty Dog games were produced at the same time.

At the Spike Video Game Awards 2012 it was officially announced that The Last of Us would be released on May 7, 2013. However, the date was later postponed to June 14, 2013 by Sony and Naughty Dog to give the developers more time. A demo of the game was made available to buyers of God of War: Ascension on May 31 .

On April 9, 2014, Sony announced a remastered version for their in-house game console PlayStation 4 . The version expanded to include the left-behind DLC appeared at the end of July 2014.

concept

The concept of The Last of Us was based on an excerpt from the BBC nature documentary series Planet Earth , which showed an ant that was infected by a Cordyceps fungus. Here the fungus takes over all actions of the insect and produces growths on its head. The idea that the fungus could attack people was the game's initial idea. Artistic inspiration came from the novels City of Thieves , I Am Legends , No Country for Old Men , The Road , On the Move , the comic series The Walking Dead and its adaptations. The computer game website GamesRadar emphasized the inspiration from the film adaptations I Am Legend and The Road , as well as the television series of The Walking Dead and the films 28 Days Later , Children of Men and Flowers of Terror .

Although the mushroom epidemic is the main background of the game, The Last of Us is “not a zombie game” but “a story about a father-daughter-like relationship,” influenced in part by the interactions between Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan, his mentor and father figure in the Naughty Dogs Uncharted series. Joel is a survivor and antihero while Ellie is a 14 year old girl with no experience in the pre-apocalypse world. The composer is the two-time Oscar winner Gustavo Santaolalla . The soundtrack mostly refers to the characters' emotions and not the usual horror in the game.

After the first trailer for the computer game Dead Island was released, the team was concerned that the two games would be very similar and deal with the human or emotional side of a post-apocalyptic event. However, after the release of Dead Island it turned out that the gameplay differed significantly. In contrast, Creative Director Neil Druckmann made it clear that the trailers for The Last of Us did reflect the feel of the game. He also stated that The Last of Us storyline should raise the bar for other developers because the current standard of storytelling in the industry is not as good as it could be. Naughty Dog showed a long trailer with game scenes at Sony's press conference during the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2012.

Extensions

In October 2013, the multiplayer DLC Abandoned Areas was released with four additional game areas .

On February 14, 2014, the DLC Left Behind was released on PlayStation Network: the approximately two-hour story told by Ellie before she meets Joel. It also fills the narrative hole from the main wintry story when Joel is seriously injured.

The Last of Us Remastered

The Last of Us Remastered was released for the PlayStation 4 on July 30, 2014. This new edition offers improved graphics with high-resolution textures. The performance of the PS4 version is fairly constant at 60 FPS , but there is also an optional 30 FPS mode included. The controller was also on the new DualShock 4 - Controller adapted and also makes use of its features, such as the Light Bar , the touchpad and the speakers use. Extras include all previously released DLCs and audio commentary by Creative Director Neil Druckmann, Ashley Johnson (Ellie) and Troy Baker (Joel). With the 1.07 patch released in November 2016, The Last of Us Remastered also benefits from the improved hardware of the PlayStation 4 Pro and supports UHD resolution and HDR .

Rating in game magazines

The first reviews of the game were consistently positive. The British film magazine Empire gave it five out of five points and wrote: “ The Last of Us is not only the best game Naughty Dog has made to date and an obvious contender for the best game of this generation of consoles, it could also prove to be Citizen- Prove Kane moment for computer games. A masterpiece that will be looked back benevolently even after decades. ”The official British PlayStation magazine also wrote a positive review, awarded the highest score with ten points and called it“ a work of art in which impressive views and sounds are emotionally draining, consistently captivating Advancing end time adventures ”. Some critics drew parallels with Cormac McCarthy , calling it a partly interactive version of The Street , his Pulitzer Prize- winning end-time novel about a father and son roaming the United States. However, the combat system was sometimes criticized. The aggregator Metacritic , which collects press reviews, received The Last of Us from 98 reviews 95 out of a possible 100 points and ranks fourth among the best-rated PlayStation 3 games of all time when it was published. In May 2014, IGN voted the game 3rd among the best games for the latest generation of consoles (PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii).

comics

A four-part comic series entitled The Last of Us: American Dreams was produced by Dark Horse Comics . It was written by Neil Druckmann , Naughty Dogs Creative Director , and Faith Erin Hicks. The comics serve as a prequel and set a year before the events in the video game. They are about Ellie and her best friend named Riley. The first issue was released on April 3, 2013. The first comic sold out quickly and a reprint was released on May 29, 2013, along with the second issue. The fourth and final issue was published on July 31, 2013.

The German version was also published on July 31, 2013 by Cross Cult as an anthology.

filming

In March 2014, Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Entertainment confirmed that a film adaptation of the video game would be produced. Sam Raimi should act as the director , the script should be written by the creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann. Maisie Williams was in the process of starring Ellie. The film should be based on the video game, although there should be some major changes that relate to the course of the story.

In April 2016, however, Druckmann expressed skepticism about the status of the development: “Now it has landed in development hell, so to speak [...]. It has not been worked on for over a year and a half. "

On March 5, 2020, it was confirmed that the storyline would be adapted for HBO as a series. Craig Mazin , who previously created and wrote Chernobyl for HBO, will work on the series with Neil Druckmann. The plot is based on that of the original game. The plot of the sequel could be dealt with in the future. Johan Renck , who worked alongside Mazin as a director on the series Chernobyl , will act as director for the pilot episode .
