action

Nathan Drake and his best friend Victor "Sully" Sullivan are set up in a deal with the seedy Talbot, in which Drake wants to exchange his precious ring left by his ancestor Francis Drake for a large amount of money. Katherine Marlowe, a former acquaintance of Sully, steals a fake duplicate of Drake's ring, believing it was the real one. However, Marlowe is also in possession of a disc in which the real ring can be inserted, which then gives clues to where the lost city of Iram may be , which Drake and Sully have been looking for for a long time.

Drake and Sully pursue Marlowe, Talbot and their husbands with the help of Drake's boyfriend Charlie Cutter and Drake's ex-girlfriend Chloe Frazer. They manage to steal the disk and find a map in the underground of London that was made by Lawrence of Arabia , which gives further clues to Iram. The group of four separates to follow the clues: Chloe and Cutter travel to a citadel in Syria , Drake and Sully visit an old castle in France . There they find part of an artifact , but are also surprised by Talbot and his men. They take the artifact from Drake and burn the lock down, with Drake and Sully barely able to escape.

Believing to have killed Drake and Sully, Talbot now travels to Syria to find the second part of the artifact and also to kill Chloe and Cutter. Drake and Sully follow them, find the artifact together with Chloe and Cutter and receive new clues that suspect Iram to be in Yemen . On the way back, however, they are provided by Talbot and Marlowe. They manage to escape, but Cutter is seriously injured in the process, which causes him and Chloe, who does not understand Drake's obsession with the city and the possible wealth that is there, to get out. However, Sully agrees to travel to Yemen with Drake. There they get help from the reporter Elena Fisher, who smuggles Drake and Sully into the state of Yemen as journalists. Under the capital Sanaa , the three find further clues to Iram, but while they are in the city, Drake is shot in the neck with an arrow with a hallucinogen that makes his senses go crazy. When he comes to, he is in the hands of Marlowe, Talbot and the pirate Rameses, who works with Marlowe. They take Drake to a ship graveyard and try to get information about the location of Iram from him. However, Drake escapes and fights his way to a cruise ship, where he suspects his friend Sully, who is apparently also held captive by Rameses.

On board the ship, Drake notices that Rameses was bluffing and Sully was not there. Drake then kills the pirate and the ship is sunk in the ensuing battle with his henchmen. Drake washes up on a beach and meets Elena in a nearby hotel, who tells that Marlowe's men captured Sully and brought him in a convoy to the Rub al-Kali . Drake then smuggles himself into a cargo plane that is supposed to fly over this desert. This leads to an accident in which the plane breaks apart over the desert. Drake can land in the desert unscathed. After a long journey he reaches a ghost town where Marlowe's men are staying. He is saved by a man named Salim and his people who have been following Marlowe's people for a long time. Together with them, Drake attacks the convoy and frees Sully.

A little later, Sully and Drake actually reach Iram in the middle of the desert and reveal the secret of the city: The water there triggers hallucinations in people, in which he experiences terrible fears. Marlowe and her lackeys want to get the water out of Iram and bring it under civilization in order to control humanity with fear. But Drake and Sully can destroy their equipment and thus thwart Marlowe's plan. The city is now beginning to fall apart. Drake and Sully begin their escape, but quickly run into Marlowe and Talbot again. Marlowe gets caught in deadly quicksand in which she threatens to sink. Drake tries to save her, but fails, drawing Talbot's anger. In a final skirmish, Drake can also kill Talbot and then flee Iram together with Sully. In the end, Sully and Drake meet Elena again and the three of them go on a new adventure.

technology

Naughty Dog massively expanded the existing Dynamic Objects Traversal System (DOTS), which was specially developed for its predecessor to enable physics calculations on moving objects. In conjunction with the so-called Dynamic Sea System , the technology allows multi-level physics simulations. The engine is able to simulate in real time the swell of the sea, a cruise ship floating above it and all objects on it, including the play figure, which are exposed to the constant movements and fluctuations of the ship. While the actual execution file of the game only takes up 18 MB, it takes up a total of 46.3 GB of storage space on Blu-ray.

The English-language website GameTrailers awarded the game the Best of E3 2011 Award in the “Best Graphics” category, ahead of competitors such as Battlefield 3 , Metro Last Light or Far Cry 3 . In November 2011, the technology blog Digital Foundry certified the engine's state-of-the-art quality .

Game mechanics

The game mechanics of Uncharted 3 largely corresponds to that of its predecessors. Fighting and climbing passages usually still alternate. However, both Drake and his opponents have new skills compared to their predecessors. Enemies now climb after Drake when he climbs up in certain places. In return, however, Drake can kick the opponent down. In addition, Drake is now able to take on multiple opponents at the same time and snatch their weapons from them in the process. Also, with good timing, it is possible to throw back hand grenades.

The playing time for the solo adventure is around eight to ten hours.

Multiplayer

Like the second part of Uncharted, Uncharted 3 also has a multiplayer mode . This has been expanded compared to its predecessor. It is now possible to individualize your own character in terms of headgear, facial features and clothing. You can also design a logo for your own team and the weapons can be improved with red dot sights and other attachments. There are several game modes in multiplayer. These include deathmatch with three teams , in which three teams of two fight each other, a classic deathmatch mode and a co-op mode in which missions with a small story must be completed.
