The game was released in November 2007. Within ten weeks, the game sold over a million times. Uncharted has sold 4.9 million copies to date.

There have been three sequels so far: 2009 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and 2011 Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception . and in May 2016 Uncharted 4: A Thiefs End . In 2015, the first three parts appeared together for the PlayStation 4 .

action

The treasure hunter Nathan Drake, according to his own statement, a descendant of the seafarer Sir Francis Drake , with the help of the reporter Elena Fisher retrieves Francis' coffin from the sea. Surprisingly, there is nothing in this except for a diary. However, the diary contains clues as to the location of the Golden City , better known as El Dorado . Together with Victor Sullivan, Drake goes on a search for El Dorado and follows the instructions in the diary. However, he leaves Elena behind. In the Amazon, Sully and Drake come across clues that may point the way to El Dorado. In a temple ruin they also learn that El Dorado is actually not a city at all, but a huge gold statue that - it seems - was stolen by the Spaniards 400 years earlier. In a stranded German submarine, Drake finds a map that gives the exact coordinates of El Dorado and communicates it to his comrade by radio. When Drake arrives again at Sully, he is surprised by criminals who are under the command of Gabriel Roman and his accomplices Navarro. They take the card from Drake and shoot Sully down. Drake, on the other hand, manages to escape. He meets Elena again, who followed him. Together they flee from the mercenary troops, get a plane and leave the jungle.

By plane they go in search of El Dorado and come across a large island in the Pacific where it is supposed to be. However, the plane is damaged and the two are forced to parachute off, separating them. Drake fights his way across the island and takes on pirates who are based on the island. After he is captured by these, he meets his old enemy Eddy Raja, who is also looking for El Dorado and therefore works with Gabriel Roman. Drake manages to take the card from Eddy and Elena helps him escape. A little later, Elena and Drake find out that Sully is still alive, but apparently working with Roman and his troops. Drake does not believe in the betrayal and wants to free his mentor. Together with Elena, he makes his way to a dilapidated monastery, where the troops suspect El Dorado, kills Sully's guard and frees his mentor, who explains that he has put off the enemy to buy Drake and Elena time.

Then Drake goes to the burial chambers of the monastery. Eventually, he and Elena find the real Francis Drake, who died without finding the treasure. Drake is paying his last respects when Eddy suddenly appears. Shortly after Eddy's appearance, both are attacked by mutated human-like beings . Eddy is bitten by one of the creatures and dragged down into an abyss. Drake, on the other hand, manages to escape into a secret submarine bunker together with Elena. While Elena stays behind, Drake goes on and reveals the secrets of the gold statue, which is apparently under a curse and turns all people who open the statue into monsters, through a film running in a movie projector in a nearby room. When Drake returns, Roman and his people have captured Elena. Drake turns back and meets with Sully to ambush the enemies. Roman and Navarro have now salvaged El Dorado. Roman opens the statue despite all warnings, as Navarro tells him that it is the real wealth of El Dorado and is infected by the same disease that mutated the Spaniards when they tried to bring the statue from the island four centuries earlier. Navarro then shoots the now transforming novel.

Navarro grabs Elena and El Dorado and escapes onto a nearby freighter in the sea. Drake pursues him and confronts Navarro, whom he sinks to the bottom of the sea together with the cursed gold statue after a long fight. Then he frees Elena and meets Sully again.

Characters

  • Nathan Drake is a treasure hunter and, by his own admission, a descendant of the famous British explorer Sir Francis Drake . His real name is Nathan Morgan.
  • Victor 'Sully' Sullivan is a treasure hunter, a good friend of Drake and his mentor. Together with Drake he went in search of El Dorado .
  • Elena Fisher is a journalist and runs her own television show on archeology. Together with Drake she went in search of El Dorado .
  • Eddy Raja was one of the antagonists and treasure hunters. He was Drake's arch rival . During a fight with Drake against the demons , he was killed by one of the demons.
  • Gabriel Roman was one of the antagonists and led the mercenaries together with Atoq Navarro . After finding El Dorado , he mutated into a demon and was shot by Atoq .
  • Atoq Navarro is one of the antagonists and was a lieutenant for Gabriel Roman . After he had brought El Dorado onto his freighter, he was sunk in the sea along with the gold statue during a battle with Drake . It is not known whether he is still alive.

Game world

The game world consists of extensive jungle areas, ruins, darkened catacombs and river areas. The interaction in the game is limited and an open game world such as in the GTA series does not exist. In these areas, however, you have the opportunity to find hidden treasures (golden Maya figures, rings, chains, rubies, etc.) in order to unlock bonus content. You rise in a ranking system and can, for example, look at designs and pictures of the game.

Game principle and technology

The game was developed in 720p. The voice output in the game was localized accordingly for the German sales area.

You control the protagonist from a third-person perspective . The play figure climbs, jumps and shimmy through the air on lianas. The fight against enemy figures is possible with different handguns and long weapons or close combat techniques, depending on the choice of the player. In a firefight, the playing figure has the option of firing shots from cover. The player aims at the opponent by means of a crosshair on the screen.

Production notes

Three sequels have been released for the game: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End . The first three parts of the series were re-released as Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection for PlayStation 4 in October 2015 .

A novel on the video game series was written by Christopher Golden . It was published in German with the title Uncharted: The fourth labyrinth in February 2012 by Panini Verlag .
