Uncharted 4 closes the saga the serial hero Nathan Drake from.

The developers describe the plot as "the greatest adventure yet, which will test Nathan Drake's physical limits and determination and ultimately what he is willing to sacrifice to save those he loves".

action

After the events in the game Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception , the adventurer Nathan Drake , who is considered the descendant of the English privateer Sir Francis Drake , has retired .

At the beginning of the game there is the first look back at Nathan's childhood in the Roman Catholic St. Francis orphanage, from which he breaks with the help of his older brother Samuel. Both go on a search for the last owners of their late mother Cassandra.

In the meantime, Nate lives in seclusion with his wife Elena Fisher in New Orleans and has renounced the dangerous hunt for treasure. The actual action begins 15 years earlier in a Panama prison , where Nate, Sam and Rafe Adler are looking for a clue to Henry Avery's treasure . They use the rich Rafe's money to use the guard Vargas for their own purposes. For example, Vargas helps Nate in a fight with another prisoner named Gustavo. In front of the modernized prison is a tower of an older prison where pirates were once executed. In one of the cells, Nate finds a cross, which represents the Holy Dismas , on the back is written digna factis recipimus ( Latin “we receive what our deeds are worth”, Lk 23.41  ELB ). However, the cross gives no indication of the treasure, as its contents have already been stolen. But then Vargas demands information about a treasure found outside, while Nate simply says no. When Nate, Sam and Rafe plan how to proceed, they are attacked by Gustavo and his thugs. The brawl is then ended by the guards led by Vargas. When the inmates are searched, Vargas discovers the cross. Thereupon he confronts the three alone in his office, but is killed by Rafe. Nate, Sam and Rafe flee from the alarmed guards. While trying to escape, Sam apparently dies and Nate follows Rafe alone to a boat on the coast.

15 years later, Nate works as a diver in a rescue team. His employer Jameson is very pleased with his services, while Nate is bored. One morning, however, Nate is sitting in his office and is met by his brother Sam. Sam needs the treasure and Nate's help because drug lord Hector Alcazar took him out of prison because Sam told him in the cell about the value and size of Avery's treasure. It turns out that at a private auction in Italy there is also a wooden cross similar to the one in the cell in Panama.

Together with Victor Sullivan, the Drake brothers steal the cross, but are noticed by Rafe and his partner Nadine Ross, but are able to flee.

In the Scottish Highlands near the Cathedral of St. Dismas, Nate and Sam find further information about the plans of Avery, who probably wanted to recruit various pirates. Rafe, Nadine and their mercenaries, who work for the private army "Shoreline" (which was founded by Nadine's father), discover the two brothers, but are put to flight when Nate sets up a trap. Together with Sully they go to Madagascar , because a map in the catacombs of the cathedral refers to a volcano in Madagascar. There are various watchtowers there, each dedicated to individual pirates who joined Avery. For example Thomas Tew , Christopher Condent , Anne Bonny or Edward England . In the Tower of Avery, the three of them find a map of the city at the foot of the volcano, which refers to two other towers. Sam examines the tower on the coast while Nate and Sully inspect the tower downtown. The two find another map that shows a group of islands off Madagascar. Shoreline mercenaries are waiting for them outside and a chase begins. Nate, Sam and Sully barely escape, but meet Elena in their hotel, who was alerted by Sully because Nate did not inform her of his plan. Then she leaves Nate, while Sully also gets out.

Nate and Sam continue their search to find out on the islands that Avery and Tew built the pirate utopia Libertalia , where they put all of their treasures in a treasure house. Nate looks through the binoculars of a large Avery statue and sees a large island in the distance where they suspect Libertalia. On the way, they get into a storm with their boat and are attacked by Shoreline who destroy their boat. Nate wakes up on the coast and goes in search of Sam. Together, the two finally discover Libertalia, which was apparently quickly abandoned by the inhabitants. In the looted treasure house they discover the remains of a fight between guards and residents. The portraits of the founders were all labeled with the word “thief”. On the ceiling is a map of the island showing New Devon as the home of the founders. There they suspect the treasure. Then the two are attacked by Nadine. When Rafe rushes to the aid of Shoreline Captains Knot and Orca, Sam threatens Nadine with a gun. Nate tries to get his brother to lower the gun, but is instead confronted with the true story of Sam's release. Sam was ransomed by Rafe to help him find Libertalia. However, since Sam went to Nate, Rafe could not forgive him for this breach of trust. Rafe then shoots Nate, who is pushed back by his brother when his arm is hit. Nate falls down a cliff, hits his head, and is caught by trees.

He remembers the break-in into the villa, where he and Sam suspect their mother's belongings. When they find their mother's book, they are threatened by Evelyn, the old and sick owner, who has alerted the police because of the break-in. However, it turns out that Evelyn was a friend of Cassendra and she tells the brothers about her mother, who was a great historian. But then the woman suddenly dies and the police enter the house. Nate and Sam can barely escape with the book. The book contains records of Avery's treasure and Francis Drake and the theories about his descendants. The brothers decide to start a new life and now live under the name Drake instead of their actual family name Morgan .

Nate wakes up in the arms of his wife Elena, tells her what has happened and asks for forgiveness. Nate and Elena go to New Devon to rescue Sam and contact Sully, who is waiting with his plane at the old port. They discover dozens of skeletal gibbets off New Devon . New Devon was also completely flooded and in the individual houses of the founding members the two discover indications that the pirates fought each other to increase their treasures. Only Avery's house was not flooded. There they meet mercenaries again and find a secret passage that leads to a ship graveyard on the coast. There they support Sam, who was able to free himself. Together they go to the plane with Sully, but Sam flees to the big mountain where Avery's ship with the treasure is said to be, but Rafe is also waiting with Shoreline.

Nate is separated from Sully and Elena and now has to keep Sam alone from the dangerous search. Nate goes into a cave and actually discovers Avery's ship. Nadine and Rafe argue, however, because Nadine had lost all of her men, except for Knot and Orca, due to the many traps of Avery. At that moment Sam grabs a boat and drives to the ship. Nadine, on the other hand, wants to leave the island, but is beaten by Rafe and betrayed by her men so that she has to accompany Rafe to the ship. Rafe cannot allow someone else to find the treasure before him, as he only became rich through his inheritance and therefore wants to prove something to himself and the world.

Nate swims to the ship while the bow of the ship is destroyed in an explosion. He enters the burning ship and finds Knot, who set off a trap, dead on the ground. He goes into the hold where the great treasure is ultimately located. There he sees his unconscious brother Sam, who is trapped under a beam. Rafe appears and Nadine threatens Nate with a gun when she approaches from behind. However, she also threatens Rafe with her weapon when she takes his from him and points to two skeletons, which are the remains of Avery and Tew. Both killed each other, like all those who were obsessed with the pirate treasure. Nadine then leaves the hold and traps Rafe and Nate.

While Nate tries to free his brother, Rafe angry attacks him with a sword. Nate grabs the sword from Tew's chest and they both fight in the burning hold. When Rafe destroys Nate's sword and sets it up, Nate quickly cuts the rope of a pulley system that carries a basket full of heavy gold statues. This shoots down and the contents buries Rafe under itself.

Nate then shoots a hole in the stern of the ship with a cannon to make the ship sink and thus free Sam. They both eventually flee the island with Elena and Sully.

Nate and Elena fly back home, and Sam teams up with Sully to take on more smuggling jobs. Elena uses the money from the ship she received from Sam to buy Jameson's company, and Nate and Elena start their own company.

A few years later, on a sunny day, Cassie tries to open her father's mysterious closet. There she finds various things such as a Spanish coin, a blue glowing substance, a gold disc and a strange cross. When she leafed through a book, however, her parents found her and confronted her. Then Nathan and Elena decide to tell her the adventures they had, whereupon the family goes to the boat to tell her the whole story from beginning to end.

Gameplay

The protagonist Nathan Drake is controlled from the third-person perspective . The play figure climbs and jumps over house roofs and cliffs in the style of parkour . The fight against enemy figures is possible with different handguns and long weapons or with close combat techniques, depending on the choice of the player. In a firefight, the playing figure has the option of firing shots from cover. The gameplay is largely based on the predecessor Uncharted: Drake's Fate. In addition, vehicles can be controlled and obstacles and abysses can be overcome quickly using a gripping hook. A detailed example of the applied game principle can be found in a sixteen-minute demonstration that was published on the occasion of the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015. There are also four different multiplayer modes.

development

The announcement of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End took place as part of the PlayStation 4 -Launch events on 14 November 2013. In March 2014 it became known that the author of the series, Amy Hennig, and the lead developer Justin Richmond, the development studio Naughty Dog to be left. In June 2014, Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, the developers behind the game The Last of Us , took over the ongoing project. The change of the creative team required far-reaching changes in the plot and the direction of the game principle.

In March 2015, the postponement of the publication date from the end of 2015 to spring 2016 was announced. This step was justified with the additional development time required to give the game the necessary fine-tuning. Lead developer Neil Druckmann was quoted as saying, “Since we first showed you the gameplay material for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End , more of the game and the story have come together and we've realized that this game is more ambitious than we originally assumed it. "

In September 2016 it was announced at the PlayStation Meeting in New York that the PlayStation 4 Pro unveiled there supports the title and can thus display Uncharted 4: A Thief's End in better graphics.

The main character Nathan Drake is also dubbed in the fourth part of the Uncharted series in the US language version by the American actor Nolan North . His brother is voiced by Troy Baker .

Uncharted 4 was one of the first games to use temporal anti- aliasing.

Extensions

As part of the PlayStation Experience 2016 in Anaheim , Naughty Dog announced a story DLC called Uncharted The Lost Legacy , which focuses on the two characters Chloe and Nadine.

reception

“The modern Indiana Jones with the loose mouth leaves me with one laughing and one crying eye after what will probably be his last adventure. Seldom have I felt so entertained by a game lately as by Uncharted 4. "

- Kai Schmidt : GamePro, May 10, 2016

The trade press particularly praised the technical quality, the detailed graphics and the staging of the game.
