biography

personality

In the first part, The Secret of Monkey Island , Guybrush looks youthful, excited, and a little simple, and reflects a child's demeanor. However, Guybrush is known for his moments of self-assurance, which often backfire, but always have a lot of humor that allows him to get out of even difficult situations.

In Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge , Guybrush shows a significantly more vicious personality and often takes morally questionable acts just to defy or move forward. He is also a little cocky due to his previous achievements, but still shows a relatively sharp mind and clever thinking.

With The Curse of Monkey Island , Guybrush's personality seems to be a combination of his previous simple behavior and his evil nature. He seems a lot friendlier than in the previous parts, but he also keeps making rude comments or performing brazen actions.

In Escape from Monkey Island , Guybrush seems pretty neurotic. He has become a much more polite and caring individual who rarely does particularly bad deeds and even goes to great lengths to help others. He's also developed a far stronger conscience, which shows itself in something as simple as his guilty conscience about stealing a coffee mug.

In the years leading up to Tales of Monkey Island , Guybrush will become significantly more mature. He is more consistent and confident, has a sharper joke and can assert himself against Elaine several times. He's also grown more compassionate, allowing him to win the friendship of Winslow (the former Screaming Narwhal captain he defeated) and Morgan LeFlay (the pirate hunter and fan). All traces of his egoism have disappeared, Guybrush loves Elaine more than anything and refuses to give up the rescue. He always remains loyal to her while at the same time having the courage to assert himself and be firm with her when need be. This seems to have led Elaine to have more respect for him and belief in his abilities. His skills have also improved significantly, as he can assert himself in a sword fight against Morgan LeFlay, the most skilled bounty hunter of all seas, and even manages to defeat her with his sharp mind.

Aside from his razor-sharp wit, Guybrush also appears to be very educated and able to read long passages of literature and pronounce extremely complex words and phrases without thinking about them, although Guybrush mentions dropping out of school several times throughout the series .

Origin of the name

The origin of the name Guybrush comes in part from the bitmap graphics drawing program Deluxe Paint , the tool that the artists used to create the character sprite. Since the character didn't have a name at the time, the file was simply called Guy . When the file was saved, Steve Purcell , the artist in charge of the Sprite , added the Brush file type , suggesting that it was the Deluxe Paint Brush file for the Sprite Guy . The file name was then "guybrush.bbm", so that the developers finally began to call this as yet unnamed character Guy as Guybrush . Guybrush's last name Threepwood was determined in a company competition and is derived from characters from English writer PG Wodehouse , including Galahad Threepwood and Freddie Threepwood (with whom he shares similar traits).

Age

Guybrush's age is not clearly stated in the game. In the second game, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge , a slip of the tongue from Guybrush ("Nine .... ehhh, twenty-one") implies that he may be nineteen while receiving a fake library card at the Phatt City library . In the third part, The Curse of Monkey Island , one learns that Guybrush is twenty years old, which he proves with his membership card of the SCUMM Actors Guild , which he has to present to a non-player character . Since Tales of Monkey Island takes place about ten years after Part 1, he would have to be between 28 and 30 years old here. However, Guybrush often lies about his age, which leaves his real age in the dark.

voice

Guybrush is set to music in German by the voice actor Norman Matt , but only in the third, fourth and fifth parts, as only these have a German voice output. In English it is set to music by the actor Dominic Armato in the third, fourth and fifth parts as well as in the remakes of the first two parts.
