Steve Purcell (* 1961 in Northern California ) is an American comic book artist , animator and game designer .

Life

Purcell attended the California College of the Arts in the early 1980s, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and where he met Mike Mignola . There the first comics with Sam & Max appeared in the student newspaper.

After graduating, he worked briefly for Marvel Comics . In 1987 the first 32-page Sam & Max comic book was published before Purcell was signed by LucasArts as an animator the following year . After his original project was discontinued, he worked on Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders and designed the covers for Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island . In between he published other volumes of Sam & Max comics.

In 1992 Lucasarts acquired the rights to Purcell's characters and produced the game Sam & Max Hit the Road . While programming the computer game, he married the game designer Collette Michaud who was involved in the development. After he left Lucasarts, a 24-part animated series based on Sam & Max was created in 1997 , which was broadcast on Fox Kids . Purcell then worked briefly at Industrial Light & Magic , but then moved to Pixar , where he worked on the script for the feature film Cars , and also worked as a voice actor . He was subsequently involved as an author and speaker in the computer games based on the film.

After LucasArt's license expired in 2005, Purcell gave it to Telltale Games . Since then, Sam & Max games have been published in episode form. In 2007 he received the Eisner Award for a Sam & Max web comic published on the Telltale website .
