Life

Childhood in Israel and studies in the United States

Neil Druckmann was born on December 5, 1978 to Yehudit "Judy" and Jerry Ilan Druckmann in the West Bank , Israel . When he was young, Druckmann's older brother Emanuel showed him comics, computer games and films. These forms of entertainment, particularly computer games from Sierra Entertainment and LucasArts , helped Druckmann learn English. Druckmann was particularly interested in storytelling and wrote his own comic books. In 1989 he moved to the United States with his family . He attended middle school and high school in Miami , Florida , and then studied criminology at the University of Florida . His brother smuggled him into the Electronic Entertainment Expo in the late 1990s . Druckmann worked as an employee at My Favorite Muffin and as a salesman at PacSun.

Druckmann soon became a graphic arts research assistant at Florida State University while living in Tallahassee . He spent a year at the university and from July 2002 worked in the visualization laboratory within the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology. During this time he and some friends started developing the game Pink-Bullet for Linux and Microsoft Windows . At some point he wanted to become an animator , which required participation in art classes, but his parents forbade him to do so. After taking a programming course, Druckmann realized that this was his preference and began a bachelor's degree in computer science in December 2002 , which he completed the following year. Druckmann moved to Pittsburgh , where he attended Carnegie Mellon University ; in August 2003, he began his master's degree in entertainment technology, which he earned in 2005 from the Entertainment Technology Center. In April 2004 Druckmann developed the game Dikki Painguin in: TKO for the Third Reich for the Nintendo Entertainment System as a student at Carnegie Mellon, in collaboration with his fellow student Allan Blomquist.

Beginning of the professional career

With Amy Hennig , Druckmann created the story of Uncharted: Drakes Schicksal and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves .

At the Game Developers Conference met printing man the co-founder of Naughty Dog , Jason Rubin . After the printer had "annoyed" Rubin, he gave him his business card. In 2004, Druckmann joined Naughty Dog as an intern in programming, before being promoted to a full-time position as a gameplay developer a few months later. During the development of Jak 3 (2004) and Jak X (2005), Druckmann repeatedly asked Co-President Evan Wells if he could join the design team. Wells was reluctant to put him on the design team since he was originally hired as a developer, but agreed to review Druckmann's design work when he finished it after hours. After developing Jak X , Wells concluded that Druckmann was qualified in the field of design and placed him in the role of game designer for Uncharted: Drake's Fate (2007). In this position, he worked closely with Amy Hennig to create the story of Uncharted , before becoming the lead game designer on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009), focusing more on writing the game's basic plot. Druckmann also worked on the original design and story of Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier (2009) before Naughty Dog gave up the game; High Impact Games completed development.

In 2009 Druckmann worked on the motion comic Uncharted: Eye of Indra, as a writer and director. Eye of Indra is a prequel to Uncharted: Drake's Fate and tells the story of Nathan Drake before the events of the first game. Druckmann's first graphic novel , A Second Chance at Sarah, was published by Ape Entertainment in February 2010. With illustrations by the artist Joysuke Wong, the novel tells of Druckmann's interest in traveling back in time to meet his wife at a younger age. “There's something cute and poetic about this idea,” said Druckmann. He got the impression that he has a lot in common with the protagonist Johnny and that "many of Johnny's mistakes and fears are based on his own inadequacies". The critics particularly praised Wong's illustrations as well as Druckmann's writing style and figure development.

Druckmann (right) with Game Director Bruce Straley (left) at PAX Prime 2014. Both worked closely together during the development of The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End .

After developing Uncharted 2 , Naughty Dog split into two teams that worked on projects at the same time. While a team was working on Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (2011), Co-Presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra selected Druckmann and Bruce Straley to lead the development of a new game; Druckmann was chosen because of his determination and talent for design. Although she is a new game of the original Yak-and-Daxter - should develop series, the team was of the opinion that they are "the fans of the franchise would be proved no service", and decided a new game titled The Last of Us to develop.

In developing ideas for The Last of Us , Druckmann used a concept he developed as a student at Carnegie Mellon University. It was his idea, the gameplay of Ico in a story that during a zombie - apocalypse plays, like those of Night of the Living Dead , which merge with a main character John Hartigan in Sin City is similar. The main character, a police officer, would have the task of protecting a young girl; however, due to her heart condition, the players often took control of the young girl and switched roles. He based The Last of Us on this concept, replacing the cop with Joel and naming the young girl Ellie. Druckmann wrote The Last of Us with the intention of "anchoring the story firmly in reality," a marked departure from Naughty Dog's earlier "light and easy-going" feel. "It had to get a little darker than Uncharted to explore a sadder subject," he explained. Before directing the play, Druckmann took acting classes in order to "speak to the actors in the same language". The game was released on June 14, 2013 in praise for Druckmann's work on the story. He has received numerous awards including a BAFTA , a DICE Award , a Game Developers Choice Award , a Golden Joystick Award, and a Writers Guild of America Award .

Druckmann later worked on the download expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind , a prequel about Ellie's relationship with her friend Riley, which received critical acclaim. He has received other awards for his work on Left Behind , including a second BAFTA and Writers Guild of America Awards. In particular, he was praised for writing a scene with a kiss between two female characters, which has been described as a "breakthrough" for computer games. He also co-wrote the four-issue comic miniseries The Last of Us: American Dreams with writer and artist Faith Erin Hicks . It was published by Dark Horse Comics , with the first issue appearing in April 2013, and was recognized for Druckmann's writing style and character development, as well as for Hicks' simplistic illustrations.

Working on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Josh Scherr , Druckmann's co-writer on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End .

After Hennig's departure from Naughty Dog in March 2014, it was announced that Druckmann and Straley were working on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (2016) as Creative Director and Game Director respectively. Initial reports claimed that Hennig was "pushed out" of Naughty Dog by Druckmann and Straley, although Co-Presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra later denied this. Even the author of the story, Mitch Dyer, admitted that this story was false. Druckmann wrote the story with Josh Scherr ; Druckmann viewed Scherr as the "funny one" and allowed him to write the humor of Uncharted 4 , as Druckmann found himself incapable of writing jokes. He appreciated the collaboration on the writing of Uncharted 4, having written The Last of Us almost entirely on his own. The game was released on May 10, 2016 and was recognized for its history. It was named Best Narrative at the 2016 Game Awards and named "Outstanding Achievement in Computer Game Writing" at the 69th Writers Guild of America Awards. Druckmann served as head of narrative development for Uncharted: The Lost Legacy , which was released in August 2017.

Film, series adaptation and The Last of Us Part II

Druckmann (left) with Sam Raimi (right), who was supposed to produce the film adaptation of The Last of Us .

In March 2014, Sony announced that Druckmann was working on a film version of The Last of Us to be produced by Sam Raimi and distributed by Screen Gems . By January 2015 he had written the second draft of the script and conducted a reading rehearsal with some actors . There was very little work after that, as Druckmann stated in April 2016 that the film had gone into developing hell and in February 2018 he said, “I don't want this film to be made”. Druckmann worked as a play tester for What Remains of Edith Finch . In August 2017 he was a guest judge on an episode of Face Off . In March 2018, Druckmann was promoted to Vice President of Naughty Dog.

Druckmann returned as Creative Director for The Last of Us Part II (2020) and wrote the game with Halley Wegryn Gross ; Straley no longer worked as a co-director. After some allegations of homophobic and misogynistic scenes in one of the game's trailers , Druckmann said the team aimed to depict the characters “in a nuanced way to find their complexity” and that “everyone's life is at risk ". The themes of revenge and retribution were inspired by Druckmann's own childhood experiences in Israel, where violence was a common theme. He wanted players to feel a "thirst for vengeance" before realizing the reality of their actions. Druckmann noted that some members of the development team were reluctant to see the game's cynicism, but ultimately preferred a controversial story to a "banal" one.

Druckmann is the writer and executive producer on a television adaptation of The Last of Us for HBO , which is expected to cover the events of the first part and parts of the sequel.

writing style

Druckmann's writing philosophy, which he recognized in conversation with game designer Cory Barlog , is “simple story, complex characters”; Druckmann doesn't like computer games with complicated representations, but likes to write complex relationships between characters. Throughout his writing, Druckmann focuses on each character in his scenes and tries to penetrate the mindset of each individual character. He tries to ignore the tropes of character in an attempt to write "honestly". Druckmann also writes with a minimalist mindset and often asks himself: “What is this scene really about? What is the least we have to say or do to convey that and nothing more? "

Before writing a game, Druckmann and Straley draft a full sketch of the story before digging deeper into the narrative and discussing the “moment-to-moment bars” of each level that lead to a bigger event. They usually start with the middle of the story, as this forms the core of the game and the narrative before examining the climax of the game and the development of the characters. The frame Moderator John Horn identified a recurring theme in pressure's stories, including A Second Chance at Sarah and The Last of Us, namely the concept of characters who try or hope to change their past in any way; Druckmann admitted he hadn't noticed this trend, but agreed and saw its repetition in one of his upcoming stories.

Influences

Druckmann mentions game designer Sam Lake , who describes himself as a "longtime fan", as a great inspiration . Druckmann's favorite games include Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge , Ico, and Resident Evil 4 , and he often takes inspiration from character-focused comics like Preacher and Y: The Last Man . Druckmann was also influenced by the character-oriented narrative style in the adventure game King's Quest by Roberta Williams . While writing The Last of Us , Druckmann took inspiration from several films, including Merciless , for his ability to get viewers to support the protagonist despite his immorality; No Country for Old Men , because of its subtle and concise implementation, which forces audience engagement; and Gravity , because of its simplicity and intensity.

Views

"While working on The Last of Us [...] I wanted to create one of the coolest, non-sexualized female protagonists, and I felt that The Last of Us was an opportunity to change the industry."

- Neil Druckmann : Presentation at the International Game Developers Association on September 16, 2013

Druckmann regularly advocates for gender equality in computer games, citing Anita Sarkeesian as an influential example; he presented Sarkeesian with the Ambassador Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards 2014 and was a regular advocate of her projects. When Druckmann found that he wrote regularly about "white, heterosexual, Christian male" characters, he felt compelled to create more diverse characters instead. Throughout the development of Uncharted 4 , Druckmann was influenced by concept artist Ashley Swidowski to include more female characters in the game. “She constantly challenges me and urges diversity in our cast,” he said. When focus testers criticized the inclusion and representation of female characters in Uncharted 4, one of whom was forced to leave the test group due to an outbreak, Druckmann replied: "Wow, why is that important?"

Similarly, The Last of Us initially received Ellie negatively in early focus tests. Druckmann prides itself on the fact that Ellie is a "strong, non-sexualized female protagonist," and hoped other developers would take similar approaches to characters without fear of being unfavorable. Druckmann and Straley were surprised by some setbacks in relation to gender roles in The Last of Us, although Druckmann noted that "the more we progress, the more these problems emerge." He said it was a “misunderstanding” that female protagonists would hinder game sales, as evidenced by the success of The Last of Us .

Personal life

Pressure man currently lives with his wife Maya and his children in California Los Angeles . He became a father during the development of The Last of Us ; his daughter was a "great inspiration" for him when writing the game. He found that the birth of his daughter reinforced his ideas about family and he realized that he would do "anything" for her. Druckmann plays computer games with his children and mentions Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the Pokémon series . On his first day as Game Director of The Last of Us, Druckmann had a headache and started double-seeing ; the following day, he found that he needed emergency eye surgery because an infection was threatening his left eye.
