reboot
After Sierra was re-established, King's Quest should also venture a fresh start. At the Game Awards 2014, a new part was announced with the help of a trailer. The new King's Quest was created by The Odd Gentleman and the first episode was released on July 28, 2015 for the PC. The new King's Quest is a point-and-click adventure and was released in five episodes from 2015 to 2016.
style
King's Quest is stylistically based on late 19th century romance . This becomes clear through the plot ( fairy tale ) as well as through the used colors pink and blue ( blue flower ). Sierra On-Lines Black Cauldron , based on the Disney cartoon Taran and the Magic Cauldron, freely based on Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles by Prydain , uses this style.
Well-known fairy tales
In the King's Quest series, especially in the first games, there are many characters from well-known fairy tales or legends. For example, Little Red Riding Hood, the witch and the witch's house from Hansel and Gretel, the dwarfs from Snow White, Count Dracula ('Count Dracula'), the flute player Pan and the archer Amor. In addition, malicious beings such as werewolf, leprechaun (malicious goblin), troll, ogre or Medusa whose gaze turns you to stone, magicians or carnivorous plants.
Game flow
Using the cursor keys and a text-based input menu, called Parser - Interface , you control the title character - in Part I, II and V Sir Graham - through a landscape full of danger and adventure, with trolls, wild beasts, murderous Robbers, witches and evil wizards. This mode was used up to King's Quest IV, after which it was switched to mouse control.
The title character changes in the other parts: in the third and sixth parts you play Alexander, the son of King Graham and his wife Valanice, in part IV her daughter Rosella and in part VII it is Rosella and her mother Valanice. The plot of the eighth game no longer has much to do with its predecessors; it is structured more like an adventure-action game and the hero has to defeat many opponents. Therefore, the game is only released from the age of 12.
What all games have in common is that you have to find, collect and use or swap objects in order to be able to complete it successfully. There are usually two possible solutions. Finding important items and using them correctly increases the number of points you can achieve in the course of the game.
Fan projects
The developer group AGD Interactive worked on parts 1, 2 and 3 with VGA graphics and mouse control and even gave the games voice output and background music. The results are available as freeware on the AGD Interactive website. In the early 1990s, there was even a Sierra EGA - remake of part 1, which is based on the then newly introduced SCI -based system. Infamous Adventures released a remake of King's Quest 3 in 2006. A new remake of King's Quest 3 was released in 2011 by AGD Interactive.
With The Silver Lining , Phoenix Online Studios released a fan adventure in a modern 3D graphic style in 2010 , which extends over several episodes.
