action

The villain hopes Hen Wen can show him the way to the black cauldron that has the power to create a gigantic army of invincible undead. With the help of the stubborn Princess Eilonwy, a quick-tempered bard, and a harassing creature named Gurgi, Taran seeks to save the world of Prydain from the Horned King. In meeting witches, elves, magical swords and the black cauldron itself, Taran learns what it really means to be a hero and that some things are more important than fame and glamor.

Production history

  • The film cost about $ 44 million but grossed only $ 21 million, which is less than half. This makes it the least successful film in the masterpiece series after The Treasure Planet .
  • After Tron , Taran and the Cauldron is the second Walt Disney Studios film to contain computer-animated sequences.
  • After The Adventures of Ichabod and Taddäus Toad, Taran and the Magic Cauldron is the first Disney Studios film to be approved for ages 6+ by the FSK .
  • Hen's vision of the Horned King at the beginning of the film is a re-used scene from a sequence that appeared in Fantasia , the one with the music from A Night on Bald Mountain .
  • The later successful director Tim Burton worked as an illustrator for the film .
  • It is the first Disney cartoon that does not include singing.

Film cuts

About half a year before it was released in American cinemas, the new chairman of Walt Disney Studios, Jeffrey Katzenberg , saw the finished film for the first time. The film music and animation had already been completed, but Katzenberg disagreed with what he saw. He found the film too brutal, so he cut out about thirteen minutes of footage. Elmer Bernstein , the composer of the music for Taran and the Magic Kettle , did not have time to adapt the music to the new cuts, which is why there are sometimes very noticeable jumps in the film music. The scene of the birth of the undead from the cauldron was cut heavily. Another cut sequence showed a soldier being decomposed by green fog. Nevertheless, the final version was the first full-length Disney cartoon to receive a PG from the MPAA . To date, the uncut version of the film has not been released on DVD or VHS.

Reviews

  • “Taran and the Magic Cauldron is Walt Disney's 25th full-length masterpiece. This film combines the inimitable perfection of Disney's masterpieces with the myths and fantasies of a bygone era. A film that all fantasy fans will get their money's worth. It is the first film in animation history to use computer-generated scenes and Dolby stereo sound. ” - Dirk Jasper FilmLexikon:
  • “A technically perfect fantasy cartoon from the Disney workshop, which entertains with bizarre mythical creatures. For a purely children's film, of course, it contains too few humorous and too much dark scenes, which do not gain any new aspects from the story of the struggle for good versus evil demonic forces. ” - Lexicon of international film ”. (CD-ROM edition), Systhema, Munich 1997.
  • “Taran and the Magic Cauldron is really not particularly original. For eighty minutes, the events simply roll off without any more than extremely superficial interaction between the characters. A feast for the eyes, sure. But little more. ” - Variety

The Wiesbaden film evaluation agency awarded the production the title valuable .
