action

Vaiana embarks on her journey with an outrigger sailboat

Vaiana lives with her tribe on the island of Motunui in Polynesia . She is the daughter and designated successor of the tribal chief. One day her grandmother Vaiana shows some forgotten sailing boats in a cave, which are equipped with a drum. As the drawings on the sails tell her, which tell of times long past, her ancestors used to venture out to sea. Vaiana imagines what it must have been like when they drove across the sea together singing and orienting themselves by the stars at night.

The island's fishermen complain that they can no longer find any fish. Therefore, Vaiana wants to sail out to sea to find food. Vaiana has had a very special connection with the ocean since she was a child, but so far none of her tribal members have ventured beyond the nearby reef that surrounds the island. On her first attempt, she accompanied her pig Pua, but she capsized. Vaiana does not want to give up, however, and after another attempt she finds herself in the middle of the Pacific.

Vaiana has learned from her grandmother that her and many other islands are threatened by darkness, as the demigod Maui once stole her “heart”, a magical artifact, from the goddess Te Fiti. With it he can create new life. Vaiana wants to track down Maui, and after she finds him, she can get him to bring the heart back with her. Maui can transform itself into different animals using a magic hook. Vaiana and Maui sail together on an eventful journey across the open ocean, fight against huge wave peaks and encounter sea monsters. When they reach the island of Te Fiti, they first have to fight the volcanic monster Te Ka. Vaiana recognizes in this Te Fiti, who transforms itself back after inserting her heart. In a fight, the magic hook of Maui breaks and he receives a new hook from Te Fiti.

When Vaiana returns to her island, she is welcomed by her parents. In the big boats that have meanwhile been taken out of the cave, they go out to sea with the villagers.

production

Staff and pre-production

A Maui- inspired character in the Polynesian village of the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando

Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker . The basis for the film is a script that was written alongside the two directors by Jared Bush , Pamela Ribon and Taika Waititi .

The makers of the film were inspired in their story by the Polynesian culture and the local mythology around the demigod Māui and wanted to create a culturally as authentic film as possible, which takes up the history and religion of Polynesia. In New Zealand's Māori mythology , Māui, also called Māui-tikitiki, is a demigod who is famous for and admired for his spectacular exploits and sophistication. Because he gave fire to humans , he is similar to Prometheus . Māui also occurs in other mythologies of Polynesia, including the Hawaiian one , and the Hawaiian island of Maui is named after him. Clements, who had read a lot of stories about the Māui myth during the preparations, said that there are a large number of great and varied stories about Māui all over the South Pacific, some of which differ, often from island to island, but at their core they all have the same elements. Māui thus initially became the main character of the story that was to be told in the film. It was only later, after they had completed their research in the South Pacific, according to Clements, that the real heroine, Vaiana, was added to their story.

For inspiration for the film shown in the Pacific island paradise took John Musker and Ron Clements 2011, a trip to Polynesia , which also includes the island of Samoa is one

The 16-year-old, who is adventurous and eager to discover, is constantly drawn out to sea, despite her father's other plans. However, because she is torn between her heart's desire and the obligation to her people and their culture, the figure of the rebellious young girl with the tradition-conscious, strict father is reminiscent of the 1989 Disney classic Arielle, the Mermaid . In Vaiana , the action usually takes place not in, but on the water. In contrast to Arielle, Vaiana is not looking for an unreachable prince and great love, but is driven by a sense of responsibility towards her village community. The filmmakers made a conscious decision not to miss a wasp waist for their Princess Vaiana and not to turn her into a maiden in need . Her character was designed in such a way that she can credibly master the stunts and action scenes in the film. Critics often recognized the portrayal of a courageous, altruistic young woman as a positive image of women, and the portrayal of Vaiana's body also corresponds to a realistic figure that allows girls to identify with, which means that the figure also serves as a role model. Juliane Liebert from the Süddeutsche Zeitung comments on this innovation that Vaiana is sometimes becoming a self-deprecating Disney film. The experienced trick directors would have understood how to repeat all the narratives known from Disney films, but also to subtly parody them at the same time. As an example, Liebert cites the scene in which Maui teases the non-princess because she “wears a dress, sings and talks to animals”.

In an interview with Deutschlandradio Kultur , Musker stated that they came up with the story of the film themselves, as the Pacific islands offer a very rich culture and seemed very inviting visually. After that, Musker read into Polynesian mythology. For further inspiration for the Pacific island paradise shown in the film, Musker and Clements took a trip to Polynesia in 2011. They were accompanied by a group of anthropologists, ethnologists, historians, linguists and choreographers from the islands of Fiji , Samoa , Moorea and Tahiti . Musker said of the accusation that they had " disneyfied " the Polynesian sagas , that it was a made-up story that was settled 2000 years ago and in which one had to include historical details of the culture, clothing and dances, on the other hand they could not be forgotten that it should be a story for a global audience that doesn't know these things.

For Auli'i Cravalho , who was born in Hawaii and who lends her voice to the title character Vaiana Waialiki (in the original Moana Waialiki) in the film, this was her first job as a speaker. Dwayne Johnson lends his voice to the demigod Maui, Alan Tudyk speaks Heihei and Temuera Morrison Vaiana's father Tui Waialiki. Christopher Jackson took over the singing voice of Tui. Nicole Scherzinger can be heard in the role of Vaiana's mother Sina Waialiki and Rachel House as Gramma Tala, Vaiana's grandmother. Pua, a name derived from the Polynesian word for flower , is spoken by Puanani Cravalho , and Jemaine Clement speaks the giant crab Tamatoa.

Vaiana is the first Disney film to be dubbed in Tahitian . The German-language dubbing was carried out by FFS Film- & Fernseh-Synchron GmbH based on a dialogue book by Tobias Neumann under the dubbing direction by Cay-Michael Wolf. The musical recordings and arrangements took place in the Jamzone Studios in Munich under the direction of Thomas Amper . The background vocals included Manuel Straube and Opetaia Foa'i .

Andreas Bourani sang a song for the soundtrack. Bourani also speaks

Film music

The soundtrack was composed by Opetaia Foa'i , Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda , and some of it was recorded. Musker explained that since the Polynesian Islands have their very own sounds, they were looking for musicians from these islands who could convey this faithfully. After the musician Opetaia Foa'i, who grew up in Samoa, was found, the singer of the world music band Te Vaka, who made the musical connection to the islands, he was brought together with Mancina.

Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter sees Oscar potential in the work on the score , and he also considers the song We Know the Way to be Oscar-worthy. Other critics see it the same way. The musicians have been nominated several times for their work, for example in the context of the Hollywood Music In Media Awards 2016. The song How Far I'll Go was nominated as Best Film Song in the context of the Critics' Choice Movie Awards 2016 and the Golden Globe Awards 2017 . On 24 January 2017 an official nomination was made How Far I'll Go as Best Original Song at the Academy Awards in 2017, the Auli'i Cravalho will also sing live during the ceremony.

The soundtrack for the film , which includes 2 CDs with a total of 59 tracks, was released on November 18, 2016. In addition to the 14 main tracks, the deluxe edition includes demo versions, outtakes and purely instrumental karaoke tracks. The soundtrack entered the UK's soundtrack album chart at number 97 after its release . The soundtrack entered the Billboard 200 album charts at number 16 and reached position 5 at the beginning of December 2016. At the beginning of December 2016, the soundtrack also entered the US soundtrack album charts at number 2 and reached number there the following week 1.

On November 28, 2016, Disney released the song You're Welcome as an element of a film clip. The song was sung by Dwayne Johnson . Johnson had already sung the song live with his colleague Lin-Manuel Miranda at the film's world premiere on November 14, 2016 at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. Both versions of the song are featured on the soundtrack. In the version by Johnson, the song entered the iTunes Soundtrack Charts Top 100.

A soundtrack with songs from the German dubbed version was released by Walt Disney Records on December 16, 2016 . The soundtrack has a length of 1:17 hours and contains twelve original songs from the movie, the original film music and two end credits in English and German: How Far I'll Go ( Alessia Cara ) / I'm ready ( Helene Fischer ) and You're Welcome (Jordan Fisher) / Volljoy ( Andreas Bourani ). The original title of the song We know the Way (sung by Lin-Manuel Miranda) is called We know the way in the German version and is sung by Louis Liebfried and Manuel Straube .

As part of the Festival d'Animation Annecy , Ron Clements and John Musker presented a scene from the film and new artwork drawings and other scenes in their rough versions in April 2016 . Here the two directors also commented on the reasons for the different film titles in individual countries. In the USA the film was released under the name Moana , which is also the name of the main character in the original. In Germany and most of the countries in Europe, however, the film and main character were given the name Vaiana instead . In Germany, this is possibly due to German copyright law , which states that no two films may have exactly the same name (unless it is a remake ). Since there is already a miniseries called Moana , which deals with the life of the Italian porn actress Moana Pozzi , it is assumed that the film was renamed Vaiana for this reason , also to avoid confusion with the actress herself. For this reason, the film is called Oceania in Italy , as the directors confirmed at the 2016 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Another reason could be the fact that the Spanish cosmetics manufacturer Casa Margot , the word mark has been registered Moana.

Lego released several themed sets for the film at the start of the film, Hasbro added various dress-up dolls and figures to its range. In November 2016, Der Hörverlag of the Random House publishing group published a German audio book on the film written by Suzanne Francis. On December 1st, 2016 Egmont published Vaiana: Das Buch zum Film , which was written by Nancy Parent and translated into German by Sonja Schuhmacher.

The film celebrated its world premiere on November 14, 2016 as part of the AFI Festival . The film was released in North American cinemas on November 23, 2016 and in German cinemas on December 22, 2016. In China, the film is one of the 38 foreign productions that may be shown there in 2016 according to a quota.

reception

Age rating

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK without any age restriction. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film contains several moments of tension that can briefly frighten or frighten small children. Although these scenes can be an emotional challenge for the youngest viewers, they cannot be expected to be overwhelmed: The moments of tension are always balanced out by numerous calm, humorous and relieving scenes. The many positive figures and the all-round happy, cheerful ending also contribute to the relief. "

Reviews

As of September 2018, the film had won over 96 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics and was one of the top-rated films on this platform in 2016.

Variety's Peter Debruge says the film sticks to the tradition that made Disney a pioneer in animated folk tales, but that the film still has a distinctly modern twist. Entertainment Weekly's Devan Coggan also says the film has a lot of the characteristics of a classic Disney adventure, from the goofy animal companion characters to the feel-good messages, but the film's smart and heated heroine is something new, the change from the usual , European princesses sunk in lovesickness. Caitlin Moore of the Washington Post says that while the film moves on familiar territory, where identity and self-discovery are the main themes, it manages to bring a breath of fresh air into the latitudes much traveled in the past.

Even if Vaiana was widely praised that Vaiana is a fighter who realizes herself, there were critics who were dissatisfied with the film. The Tongan cultural anthropologist Tevita O. Ka'ili said that Pacific culture is based on dualisms and that the counterpart to the god Maui is actually the heroic goddess Hina and not a little princess named Vaiana. Ka'ili sees the “ Disneyfication ” of Polynesian legends as a colonial act in which cultural narratives and symbols are robbed of their original meaning and simplified. It was also criticized that Disney brought a costume of the character Maui on the US market, which was accused of " blackfacing ", a theater originally from the 19th century, in which darkly made-up actors slipped into the roles of colored people .

Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter calls the film contemporary Disney at its best. It is a lively adventure that combines state-of-the-art computer animation with traditional storytelling and colorful characters that are characterized by grandiose voices. His colleague Scott Feinberg saw a good chance for Vaiana to receive a nomination for Best Animated Film at the 2017 Academy Awards , which he did.

Gross profit

After its theatrical release, the film reached number 1 on the box office in the USA, Russia and France. In the US, Moana became the second most successful film ever to be shown on a Thanksgiving weekend, which lasts a total of five days and is known for particularly high grossing. In those five days, the film grossed more than 80 million US dollars. Only the film Frozen - Totally Unabashedly was able to show a higher grossing result on Thanksgiving weekend 2013. In China, the film grossed 12.3 million US dollars on its opening weekend. The total worldwide revenue of the film from theatrical screenings to date is $ 643.3 million. The film reached number 12 among the most successful films released in 2016. In Germany, the film has so far recorded 2,118,970 visitors.
