Lin-Manuel Miranda (born January 16, 1980 in New York ) is an American actor , composer , songwriter and rapper . He is the composer and lyricist of the award-winning musicals In the Heights and Hamilton .

Life

Miranda grew up as the son of Puerto Rican parents in Manhattan and studied at Wesleyan University . In the second year of his studies, he started working on In the Heights . The musical combines Latin American musical styles and hip-hop with conventional musical music. It addresses the influence of gentrification and upward mobility on an immigrant neighborhood. An early variant of In the Heights premiered in 1999. In 2007 the musical Off-Broadway and 2008 on Broadway . Miranda played the main role of Usnavi in ​​it. The Broadway production won four Tony Awards and the accompanying recording won a Grammy .

From 2007 to 2015 Miranda worked on Hamilton , a musical about the life of the American founding father Alexander Hamilton . In 2015 Miranda was accepted into the MacArthur Fellowship . In 2017 he was also inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars annually.
