action

30 years after the collapse of the galactic empire: Luke Skywalker has disappeared. In his absence, the remnants of the empire under the leadership of leader Snoke have reformed into the so-called First Order, which is terrorizing the galaxy and fighting the New Republic. Princess Leia Organa , now General of the Resistance, sends her best fighter pilot Poe Dameron on a mission to find an artifact that is said to reveal Luke's possible current whereabouts.

On the desert planet Jakku, Poe receives a hologram card from an old archivist named Lor San Tekka - an excerpt from a larger map that could lead to Luke Skywalker. Before Poe can disappear with the map and his droid unit BB-8 , Lor's village is attacked by the First Order and all of the villagers are killed. Poe is captured by a First Order Commander Kylo Ren and taken to a Star Destroyer over Jakku. Before that, however, he can hide the map in BB-8 and help the droid to escape.

One of the First Order Stormtroopers, FN-2187 , is emotionally gripped by the death of a comrade during the operation and the subsequent killing of innocent villagers; he frees Poe and with his help escapes from the Star Destroyer. While escaping in a TIE fighter, it is damaged and the two men crash-land on Jakku. FN-2187, which had recently been given the name "Finn" by Poe, is thrown out of the TIE fighter when it crash-lands. When he reaches the wreck, he only finds Poe's jacket and believes that his ally died in the crash. Kylo Ren, who learned of the existence of BB-8 and possessed the map from Poe Dameron through a power trick, orders a hunt for the droids and the renegade soldier on the planet Jakku.

On Jakku, the scrap collector Rey lives from the slaughter of old wrecks from the time of the rebel uprising against the empire. During one of her forays into the desert, she encounters BB-8, who has just been captured by a local, and frees the droid who is clinging to her heels in gratitude. After initially wandering around aimlessly, Finn finds a city in the middle of the desert. There he watches as Rey is attacked by two locals who try to steal her BB-8; However, Rey can successfully defend himself before Finn can step in. When BB-8 recognizes Poe's jacket on Finn, he and Rey confront the ex-stormtrooper, and Finn, who is fond of Rey, tells her that he is a member of the resistance. Stormtroopers arrive and fire on Rey and Finn. However, the two manage to capture the Millennium Falcon, which is in a junkyard, and manage to escape Jakku with him.

In space, Rey and Finn are caught by a beam and taken on board a freighter. They hide in the falcon's hold, where they are found by Han Solo and Chewbacca , who are again smugglers and from whom the falcon was stolen some time ago. The clash between Rey, Finn, BB-8 and Han is disrupted by two groups of alienated Solo business partners who want to collect their claims. In an attempt to cut off the enemy parties from each other, Rey accidentally releases three dangerous creatures trapped on board, who immediately hunt down the occupants of the freighter. Han, Chewie, Rey, Finn and BB-8 escape aboard the Millennium Falcon, where Han tells his two passengers that the ancient Jedi stories and the light and dark sides of the Force are true. Luke had tried to create a new Jedi Order after the fall of the Empire, but one of his disciples fell into the dark side of the Force and killed the rest of the ascending order, whereupon Luke felt guilty about retreating into a self-chosen exile and a card that leading to the first Jedi temple on Ahch-To. This renegade student was Kylo Ren (actually Ben Solo), the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia, who follows his grandfather Darth Vader on the path of the Dark Force under the guidance of the mysterious Supreme Leader of the First Order, Snoke.

After some persuasion, BB-8 reveals the map it contains, but since this is only a part, it is not enough to find the Jedi Temple. Han suggests taking his passengers to a friend in Takodana, the bar owner Maz Kanata , who Han wants her to bring BB-8 to Leia, but she refuses. Finn, who wants nothing more than to escape the First Order, finally tells Rey the truth about his origins and begs her to go with him, which she refuses. Then Rey is lured by a child's voice into the basement of Maz's palace bar, where she finds Anakin Skywalker's old lightsaber , which Luke later received and lost again in the fight against his father. When she touches the sword, she has visions of herself, Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker and a few other voices. Maz realizes that Rey is Force sensitive and offers her the gun. However, since Rey is disturbed by the visions, she wants nothing to do with it and escapes from the building and into the woods, followed by BB-8.

Meanwhile, the First Order is taking its first step towards subjugating the entire galaxy. From her new super weapon - the Starkiller base, which was completely installed in a converted planet - she opens fire with a gigantic beam weapon on the seat of the New Republic in the Hosnian system and destroys the star system in a single blow. Through the work of spies and informers, she also learns the current whereabouts of the map, and an orderly raid party attacks Maz's palace. Han, Chewbacca and Finn take up the fight against the attackers and are able to hold their position successfully until a squadron X-wing of the Resistance arrives and defeats the First Order. However, Rey is overwhelmed by Kylo Ren, who has followed her and BB-8's tracks, and taken as a prisoner.

Han, Finn, Chewbacca and BB-8 meet Princess Leia and C-3PO and are taken to the base of the resistance on D'Qar, where Finn meets Poe again, who, contrary to all expectations, also survived the crash on Jakku. Even R2-D2 is there, but Luke's disappearance the droid has gone into standby mode and is therefore remained inactive for years. While Finn reveals to the resistance all the information he can provide about the Starkiller base, Han and Leia engage in a conversation. It is revealed that the two broke up after their son's betrayal in order to somehow come to terms with the pain of this mistake. Nevertheless, Leia sincerely hopes that her son can still be converted to goodness and asks Han to try everything to get him back. With the help of its now completed information, the Resistance is planning the destruction of the Starkiller Base. Finn (who mainly wants to save Rey), Han and Chewbacca volunteer as a raiding party to infiltrate the base and disable its shields so that the resistance can attack.

Meanwhile, Rey is interrogated by Kylo Ren at the Starkiller base about the contents of the card. When the latter uses the Force to extract the information from her memory, Rey's own potential awakens in the Force, and she can withstand Kylo Ren's intrusion. When he then leaves her alone to report this incident to Snoke, Rey uses the Force for the first time to escape her captivity and to find a safe hiding place in the base. There she is found by Finn, Han and Chewbacca after turning off the screens, and together they try to bring the operation to an end by incapacitating an important energy oscillator of the Starkiller weapon.

The resistance begins its attack on the Starkiller base, but can initially do nothing against their primary weapon. While trying to sabotage the oscillator, Han encounters Kylo Ren, who has sensed his father's arrival through the Force. Though Han does his best and Kylo Ren himself is shaken with doubts, he kills his own father in front of Rey, Finn and Chewbacca. In a fit of rage, Chewbacca injures Kylo with a blaster shot and detonates the previously attached explosive charges, which tears a gap in the wall of the oscillator. With this opening, Poe manages to fly inside and damage the oscillator with his hunter's on-board weapons so critically that the energy accumulated in it gets out of control and initiates the self-destruction of the base.

Finn and Rey flee to the surface of the planet, but in the forest where the Millennium Falcon is hidden, Kylo Ren stands in their way, who wants to kill Finn as a traitor and bring Rey to Snoke. Finn faces Kylo Ren with Anakin's lightsaber in a duel, but is seriously injured by the latter. Desiring to protect her boyfriend from Kylo Ren, Rey uses the Force and lightsaber to engage Kylo Ren in a duel. She can defeat him, but when the planetary surface rips open between them, the two are separated. With Chewbacca's help, Rey and Finn escape the collapse of the planet and they return to the resistance headquarters. When they got there, R2-D2 reactivated suddenly and reveals the missing part of the card that he had secretly kept in his memory. With the now completed map, Rey and Chewbacca set off on board the falcon to the water planet Ahch-To. The film ends with Rey finding Luke on a cliff and offering him his old lightsaber.

The fictitious calendar of the Star Wars universe is used for the schematic classification of the actions . This differentiates between the years before the Battle of Yavin (VSY) and after the Battle of Yavin (NSY). The Battle of Yavin IV marks the end of Star Wars (1977), in which Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance destroy the first Death Star .

places

production

The plot after The Return of the Jedi has been retold in numerous books since 1983 , but with the takeover by Disney, the previous expanded universe was deleted from the official canon of Star Wars. This only includes the previous six films as well as the animated series Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars including the corresponding cinema film . Star Wars: The Force Awakens is therefore not a film adaptation of existing literary models.

In October 2012, director George Lucas sold the episodes VII, VIII, and IX plot and Lucasfilm to Disney . Michael Arndt edited the plot and was then hired as a screenwriter. David Fincher , Brad Bird and Guillermo del Toro were originally intended as directors, but all three had to decline due to scheduling difficulties. In January 2013 that JJ Abrams, the director and announced, Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg , the consultant would be of the project. After the scriptwriter Michael Arndt left the production, Lawrence Kasdan, who had already written the script for The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi , and JJ Abrams took over his duties and wrote the final script.

As early as the end of 2013, open casting for young actors was held in a total of eleven US and British cities. More than 37,000 people took part, plus around 30,000 submitted applications.

As a consultant for the film, George Lucas attended the meetings that discussed the first drafts of the script. Lucas' son Jett told The Guardian that his father was “very torn” in the decision to sell the rights to Star Wars, even though he was involved and very interested in the decision to direct Abrams was to introduce a new generation of Star Wars characters into the universe. The documents that he handed over to production included rough drafts for the next films that he had written when he was considering making the next parts himself a few years ago. In January 2015, Lucas stated that Disney had discarded its designs for the film. In January 2014, Abrams confirmed that the script for the film had been completed.

Production costs amounted to 200 million US dollars . The film's costume designer is Michael Kaplan , who previously worked with Abrams on the Star Trek films.

Filming

Filming began in May 2014 and ended on November 3 of the same year. As in previous collaborations ( Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness ), JJ Abrams and his cameraman Dan Mindel shot on 35mm film . In addition, set in the desert Jakku was for an action sequence, 70-mm - IMAX format used. The shooting of the film took place mainly in the Pinewood Studios , but also on Iceland , on Skellig Michael and in Abu Dhabi . The film was also shot on the former Royal Air Force military base Greenham Common in Berkshire, near Pinewood Studios.

The parallel shooting of James Bond and Star Wars on the same studio site gave the opportunity for Daniel Craig's cameo appearance . In the scene when Rey is able to free himself from the captivity of the First Order, he plays the stormtrooper who is influenced by Rey via thought power.

Film music

As with all six previous episodes, John Williams again composed the score for Star Wars: The Force Awakens . He also composed the music for the film's first trailer. Unlike the previous films, the new soundtrack was not recorded in England by the London Symphony Orchestra , but in Los Angeles . The recordings were conducted by John Williams and William Ross; In addition, at Williams' express request, Gustavo Dudamel conducted the recordings of the title melody for opening and closing credits. Lin-Manuel Miranda also composed two musical works for the film.

marketing

More than a year before the film was released, on November 28, 2014, the first teaser of the film was released. In the first week, the 90-second teaser was viewed more than 110 million times, setting a record. The teaser was extensively discussed, criticized and parodied in the press and on the Internet. The second teaser, which was published at the Star Wars Celebration on April 16, 2015, showed unprecedented interest with 88 million viewers in the first 24 hours. A third trailer was released on October 20, 2015, one day after advance ticket sales began. This exceeded the previously set records with 112 million viewers on the first day. Various TV spots followed, as well as exclusive trailers for Japan and the People's Republic of China , all of which were published unannounced before the world premiere.

Conflict with German cinema operators

The German theatrical distributor Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Germany had already adjusted its distribution terms at the start of Avengers: Age of Ultron in April 2015. The group now basically demanded 53 percent of the ticket price from the cinemas, without taking into account the size of the venue as before. In the case of Star Wars: The Force Awakens , there was again a conflict between distributors and many German cinema operators. This conflict was still not resolved even after the start of advance sales. The film could therefore not have been shown in at least 50 German cinemas. On November 20, 2015, however, it became known that Cinemaxx was the last German cinema chain to successfully conclude contract negotiations with Disney. Already at the end of October it was announced that Star Wars had achieved a record result with 200,000 tickets in advance sales.

Hannah Pilarczyk says on Spiegel Online , Star Wars: The Force Awakens "should meet the expectations of the vast majority of fans". But the film is hardly surprising. Above all, however, lies “the layer of dust and sand that gave the first films their great patina”. The dialogues are “rich in tempo and punch”, and the new ensemble knows how to implement them skillfully. But "of the impartiality with which Abrams had previously modernized the Star Trek franchise " is not felt.

Dirk Peitz writes in Die Zeit that the film is "the greatest possible play-safe of a Hollywood blockbuster" and "ultimately a variation of what is possibly far too familiar". Nevertheless, it is a pleasure "to witness the processing of a totally predictable dramaturgy", and that is "mainly due to the film aesthetics that Abrams uses."

Kai Mihm praises in epd Film that “Abrams' cinephile nostalgia is of a similar sensitivity here”, as in Super 8 . Abrams and his co-writer Lawrence Kasdan played "with familiar motifs" from the very first film and docked "on to the original storyline". At the same time, they developed “fresh ideas and familiarize us with a whole range of fascinating new characters.” They “manage the trick of merging continuation and reboot.” At the beginning, one still thinks “a dashing pilot (Oscar Isaac) would Hero of the film. But it disappears ”, and with the actual hero duo of young woman and black man, Star Wars “ remarkably defies the usual heroic conventions of blockbuster cinema ”.

In the Austrian daily Der Standard , Michael Pekler criticizes that the film “looks like a single popular cultural reservoir that is shallow enough that nobody can drown in it. What is remarkable is the dexterity and accuracy with which the various references and set pieces are placed. Whether the attacking spaceships whistle like the helicopters in Apocalypse Now or a lightsaber stuck in the ice like Excalibur in a stone: The Force Awakens is a film you've seen before you've even been to the cinema. That corresponds to the logic of a B-movie from the 1940s - but with a budget of 200 million dollars. "

For Daniel Kaiser from Norddeutscher Rundfunk , “the film is just an infusion. He is discouraged. It has nothing surprising. ”For the radio journalist,“ in principle […] there is no new idea. The old ideas just look a little better now. And at what feels like the fifth showdown on a really deep abyss that suddenly opens up, you sometimes look discreetly at the watch in the cinema. The Force Awakens looks like a revamped version of the first trilogy. "

Carsten Baumgardt from Filmstarts says in his conclusion that “finally [...] there are real Star Wars again ! With the heavily nostalgic The Force Awakens, JJ Abrams is celebrating a more than auspicious, incredibly entertaining prelude to a new Star Wars trilogy. "

Christian Horn is also enthusiastic about Filmrezension.de : “Only when the lights go out in the cinema does the contract with the audience begin, and only then does it decide whether there could possibly be more of it. In the case of The Force Awakens, the answer is, Yeah! With the almost perfect blockbuster, the pop culture myth is being given an absolutely worthy successor. "

International reviews were also divided over all the praise and general recognition of the commercial achievement. Richard Brody from the New Yorker criticizes the tight emotional calculation of the production. Ernesto Diezmartínez from the film blog Vertigo praises the entertainment value, but describes the work as being so careful to meet every fan expectation that every risk was avoided. Phil Hall of the Examiner wonders, because of the obvious parallels between the original films, whether instead of Disney Xerox bought the rights to Star Wars.

Gross profit

The film's budget of 245 million US dollars is set against box office revenues of around 2.067 billion US dollars after its theatrical release. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was only the third film, after Titanic and Avatar, to top the $ 2 billion mark in global revenue. In just twelve days, The Force Awakens broke, among other things, the record for reaching the one billion dollar mark fastest. Not including inflation (nominally), it is the financially most successful film at the North American box office (USA and Canada) and by far the most successful film in the Star Wars film series. A few weeks before its premiere, Steven Spielberg thought the film was ambitious enough to break the previous record for the most successful film. In the list of the world's most successful films of all time, Star Wars: The Force Awakens currently ranks fourth (as of August 8, 2020). The net profit, which was only achieved through the running time in theaters worldwide, was over 780 million US dollars.

Awards (selection)

Star Wars: The Force Awakens only celebrated its world premiere on December 14, 2015 in Los Angeles . The film was therefore not considered for various film awards, the nomination lists of which were published in early December. For example for the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes . In addition, critic associations such as the National Board of Review , the New York Film Critics Circle or the Los Angeles Film Critics Association did not see any exclusive critic screenings, so that the film could not be nominated for these awards either. Disney justified the procedure with the fact that they wanted to keep the story secret as long as possible.

Trivia

  • In the scene where Rey touches Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber, the following flashback shows the mechanical breathing of Darth Vader and a scream from Luke Skywalker from The Empire Strikes Back . You can also hear the whispering voices of Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Obi-Wan being the only one who speaks to her directly. He calls her name and explains that this is the first step. In the original version, the voices of Yoda and young Obi-Wan were voiced by Frank Oz and Ewan McGregor for the film; For the voice of old Obi-Wan, a clay snippet from the late Alec Guinness was used.
  • The newly introduced character Finn is named FN-2187 as a stormtrooper. 2187 is also the prison cell number on the first Death Star from which Princess Leia was saved by Luke Skywalker and Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope . Both go back to George Lucas' enthusiasm for the film 21-87 by director Arthur Lipsett .
  • In the scene where Finn is looking for a tool in the spare parts, he finds the old training remote (exercise ball) that Luke used aboard the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope to improve his skills with the Power to exercise.
  • In September 2016, Panini- Verlag also published the German translation of the novel Blutlinie (original title: Bloodline) written by Claudia Gray , the plot of which is set six years before The Awakening of Power and tells the story of the film.
  • The droid R2-D2 has been embodied in all Star Wars films by the British actor Kenny Baker , unless it was animated or remote-controlled . He died in August 2016. In The Force Awakens mainly Jimmy Vee took on the role of R2-D2, even if he was not named in the credits, Kenny Baker is listed as "R2-D2 advisor".
