Lupita Amondi Nyong'o (born March 1, 1983 in Mexico City ) is a Kenyan actress and filmmaker . For her dramatic performance of a slave in the film 12 Years a Slave was her by the Oscar ceremony in 2014 with the Oscar as best supporting actress award.

Life

Nyong'o [ˈɲɔːŋɔ] was born in 1983 as the daughter of the Kenyan politician Peter Anyang 'Nyong'o in Mexico City and grew up in Kenya. She gained her first experience in a theater of the Phoenix Players production company in Nairobi .

She studied at Hampshire College in the United States, where she graduated with a degree in film and theater. She then worked on the production of various films, including Der Ewige Gärtner (2005) and Namesake - Two Worlds, One Journey (2006). In 2008 she starred in Marc Grey's short film East River . She then returned to Kenya, where she took on a role in the television series Shuga .

In 2009 she made the documentary In My Genes about the life of the Kenyan albinos , for which she wrote the screenplay and was also responsible as director and producer.

This was followed by studies at the Yale School of Drama , where she also appeared in several theater productions. Immediately afterwards she got the role of Patsey in Steve McQueen's drama 12 Years a Slave . The role earned her numerous awards, including an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress , the Chicago Film Critics Association Award, and the Critics' Choice Movie Award, as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress . Nyong'o then received a lot of media attention, especially in the USA, she was photographed for the front pages of major fashion magazines such as Vogue and Glamor and was called a style icon.

On June 2, 2014, it was announced that she was hired for the role of Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Force Awakens , which was released in December 2015. She was also involved as Maz Kanata in the sequel , which was released in 2017. In 2018 she was first seen in the role of the warrior Nakia in the Marvel film Black Panther .

In 2014, Nyong'o secured the rights to the film adaptation of the novel Americanah by the Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie . In the TV mini-series she will play Ifemelu, the protagonist.

Her German dubbing voice is usually Rubina Nath . In the Star Wars films she was voiced by Ghadah Al-Akel and Regina Lemnitz , among others . In Black Panther lent her Alice Bauer her voice.
