Ms. is an American feminist magazine founded in 1972 by second wave feminists Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes .

story

With the assistance of Clay Felker, editor of New York magazine , the first issue of Ms. was preprinted as a removable insert in New York magazine on December 20, 1971, and on its own in January 1972. 300,000 copies of the first issue were printed, the were sold within eight days. The magazine addressed women's issues such as equal pay, called for the right to legal abortion and denounced the injustice of the patriarchy. The editors did not publish fashion reports or recipes. The magazine had the highest circulation in its history with more than half a million copies.

As feminist concerns began to gain attention in American society in the late 1970s, Ms. lost readers, advertisements, and circulation. In September 1987 Gloria Steinem got out. The Australians Sandra Yates and Anne Summers took over the management. The magazine was sold twice within six months, first to the Australian company John Fairfax Ltd., which resold it after six months.

The magazine appeared monthly from July 1972 to 1987. It has been published quarterly since then.
