action

After the Hosnian system and thus the headquarters of the New Republic, the Galactic Senate and their Starfleet have been destroyed by the Starkiller base, the First Order is about to destroy the last base of the resistance on D'Qar . During a space battle, the resistance pilot Poe Dameron and a small fleet manage to destroy a large siege battleship with bombs. However, this results in considerable losses of the resistance, the remaining fleet of which escapes with the help of a hyperspace jump.

Meanwhile, on Ahch-To , Rey tries to persuade Luke Skywalker, who lives in self-imposed exile, to join the resistance. Luke defies Rey's request as he graduated with the Jedi due to his failure to train Kylo Ren. Rey tries desperately to change the Jedi Master's mind. In the Millennium Falcon , Luke meets R2-D2, who shows him his sister Leia's call for help to Obi-Wan Kenobi , whereupon Luke decides to train Rey.

Meanwhile, Kylo Ren faces Supreme Leader Snoke on the Supremacy , a gigantic mega-class star destroyer. Snoke has doubts about Kylo's abilities due to Kylo's loss to Rey at Starkiller base. In the meantime, Rey and Kylo develop a mental connection through which they can communicate, even though they act spatially far apart.

The Resistance Fleet is discovered again by the First Order after the hyperspace jump. The bridge of the command ship Raddus is badly damaged in an attack and all high-ranking leaders are killed. Only Leia can use the Force to save herself back into the ship, but from now on she is in a coma . Vice-admiral Holdo will take over her post, who wants to stay out of reach of the supremacy of the First Order. A renewed jump into hyperspace does not make sense due to scarce fuel reserves, since the First Order can locate and track the ship even during the jump. So that they can escape anyway, Finn, the maintenance worker Rose - whose sister was killed in the attack on the battleship - and BB-8 are sent on a secret mission by the degraded Poe, who doubts Holdo's abilities. You should deactivate the direction finder on Snoke's ship, which is responsible for locating the fleet. Following a tip from Maz Kanata , they have to find the master code breaker in the betting town of Canto Bight , who is supposed to give them access to Snoke's ship unnoticed. After Finn and Rose were arrested by the local police on Canto Bight, "DJ", who is sitting in a cell with them, reveals himself to be a code breaker, and the three of them flee the planet together with BB-8.

Meanwhile, Rey continues to familiarize himself with the Force. The power bond between Kylo Ren and Rey is getting stronger and he tells her that Luke betrayed him back then and wanted to kill him. Luke, however, reveals to her that he had felt the dark side in Kylo, whereupon Kylo attacked him and destroyed his Jedi Academy and most of his students. Rey assures Luke that she can still feel good in Kylo. However, she fails to get Luke to return, so she sets off alone, hoping to convert Kylo for good.

After Rey faces the First Order, Kylo takes her to Supreme Leader Snoke. The asks Kylo to kill Rey to strengthen the dark side in him, whereupon he kills Snoke. He and Rey then jointly defeat Snoke's personal Praetorian Guard. Finn, Rose and BB-8 managed at the same time to get to the Snoke Star Destroyer with the help of "DJ". Shortly before they manage to deactivate the direction finder, however, they are captured, not least by "DJ" changing sides. In the meantime, Poe has started a mutiny in order to bring the spaceship to a safe place in the short time window that would result after the hoped-for deactivation of the direction finder. This mutiny is ended with the support of the reawakened Leia. Poe learns that, contrary to his expectations, Holdo had a plan up his sleeve, namely to bring the resistance fighters on smaller transport ships to the mineral planet Crait , where a former fortified rebel base is located. Support is to be called from there, while the First Order, still following the flagship of the rebels, is to fly past the planet without noticing that its crew is no longer on board. This project fails, however, because "DJ" has meanwhile sold the information to the First Order that the rebels are leaving in small transport ships.

Rey, firmly convinced that Kylo will join her after killing Snoke, realizes she was wrong. He tries, clearly desperate, to convince Rey to join him. In the ensuing duel for Anakin Skywalker's former lightsaber, it breaks.

The resistance suffered heavy losses again from the first order bombardment. Holdo then decides to turn the Raddus , on which she was left alone, and rams the ship by means of a hyperspace jump into the supremacy , which is badly damaged and destroyed along with all star destroyers in the approach path. On the collapsing Supremacy Finn succeeds in overpowering Captain Phasma in an armed duel, which apparently falls to her death. Together with Rose and BB-8, they escape on a shuttle and follow the resistance on Crait. Rey also escaped from the ship in an escape pod. Kylo Ren names himself the new Supreme Leader and orders the remaining First Order forces to attack Crait.

In the battle the resistance is clearly inferior and seems already defeated. Finn tries to turn the tide on a suicide mission with his glider, but is deliberately pushed aside by Rose at the last second, seriously injuring herself. To everyone's surprise, Luke appears at the base and faces Kylo on the battlefield. He announces that he will not be the last of the Jedi. After Kylo, in a rage, apparently fatally with his lightsaber, it is revealed that Luke is still on Ahch-To and only appeared in the form of a power projection on Crait. This action gives the resistance enough time to escape with the help of Rey, Chewbacca and R2-D2 who arrive at the Millennium Falcon. The plan almost fails because the escape tunnel is blocked by rubble, which is cleared aside by Rey with the help of the Force. Luke, greatly weakened by the exertion, dies and becomes one with the Force. Leia assures the dozen remaining members of the resistance that the rebellion has everything it takes to spread the spark of hope and be resurrected. Leia and Rey both sense through the Force that Luke has died.

In Canto Bight, meanwhile, a stable boy who helped Rose and Finn escape and who wears their ring with the mark of resistance, listens to the legends and stories about the Jedi master Luke Skywalker, before he pulls a broom towards him with the force and Hopefully he looks at the stars where he discovers a spaceship that is about to jump into hyperspace.

production

Project development and pre-production

Lucasfilm President and Producer Kathleen Kennedy , 2017.

In October 2012, Star Wars inventor George Lucas sold his production company Lucasfilm , and with it, among other things, the rights to Star Wars , to Disney . As a result, a new Star Wars trilogy was announced. In August 2014, it was announced that Rian Johnson would be responsible for the script and direction of The Last Jedi . When producers were Ram Bergman , a longtime partner Johnson and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed JJ Abrams remained as Executive Producer . Just before George Lucas sold the rights to his brand to Disney, he was working on ideas for a new trilogy. Some of them, in which, for example, Luke Skywalker lives in solitude in an old Jedi temple and ultimately trains a young Jedi named Kira, can be found in Johnson's final version without Lucas being involved in its creation.

Since work on the plot of the immediate predecessor The Force Awakens was still ongoing, Johnson worked closely with JJ Abrams, who directed and co- wrote the predecessor's script with Lawrance Kasdan . During the work on the script and the shooting, Johnson was also in close contact with the so-called Lucasfilm Story Group, whose task is to ensure the continuity of all works published by Lucasfilm within the Star Wars universe. He also exchanged ideas with some of the actors and members of the crew and improved the dialogues with them. For example, Carrie Fisher played a key role in the dialogues of her character Leia Organa, and Laura Dern also made final changes. At Fisher's suggestion, several characters wear jewelry in the film. Johnson was inspired by numerous works he and his team watched during production, including Above the Rooftops of Nice (1955), The Commander (1950), The Bridge on the Kwai (1957), Three Outlaw Samurai (1964), A letter that never arrived (1960), Sidi Hakim uprising (1939) and Sahara (1943). Particular inspiration with regard to Luke's power skills Johnson drew from the 2010 published, no longer part of the official canon , book The Book of the Jedi , in which, among other things, the ability to project power was described.

Benicio del Toro confirmed his involvement in the film in September 2015, while Kennedy announced in December of that year that in addition to "a handful of new" members, the entire cast from The Force Awakens would return for the eighth episode. In February 2016, Laura Derns and Kelly Marie Trans' involvement in the film was revealed. A little later, the names of the three most important new characters ("DJ", Vice Admiral Holdo, Rose Tico) were known, with the character of Rose according to Johnson having the largest share of all new characters in the film.

Filming

Director and screenwriter Rian Johnson (r.) And producer Ram Bergman , 2017.

The shooting began in September 2015 even during the pre-production on Skellig Michael , an island off the coast of Ireland . Due to the weather conditions, filming at a later date would have been difficult. As in The Force Awakens, the island served as the setting for the planet Ahch-To , on which Luke Skywalker is in exile. The film was shot in the historic, former monks' settlement, which can be reached via almost 600 steps on a stone staircase without a railing. It is one of the oldest monasteries in Ireland. Since Skellig Michael and the side islands are home to one of the largest gannet colonies in the world, birds were often seen in the background during filming. In order not to have to laboriously remove them from the final film, the fictional bird breed of the Porgs was created, which live on the island in the film.

Work in Pinewood Studios ( England ) began in November 2015, with Rick Heinrichs acting as production designer . A total of 180 to 200 creatures were created as costumes and masks for the film, but not all of them can be seen in the final film. According to Neal Scanlan , so many real, non-computer-generated ( CGI ) creatures have been produced and used for any Star Wars film before .

In January 2016, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that The Last Jedi would not hit theaters on May 26, 2017 (almost 40 years after Star Wars to the day ), as originally planned , but only in December 2017.

In February 2016, Disney's CEO Bob Iger confirmed that filming on The Last Jedi had started at Pinewood Studios. 14 stages and a total of 125 different sets were used, on which many employees who were previously part of the crew for The Force Awakens worked. In March 2016 the film was shot for a week in the historic old town of Dubrovnik ( Croatia ). It served as the setting for the play town Canto Bight, where Finn, Rose and BB-8 meet "DJ" and escape the planet after a chase through town. In May it was shot again in Ireland. Malin Head in County Donegal and Ceann Sibeal in County Kerry (off the coast of which Skellig Michael is located) served as an additional backdrop for the planet Ahch-To, as no filming was possible in the medieval monastery complex on Skellig Michael. These were recreated in Ceann Sibeal. Mark Hamill was initially surprised by the role of Luke Skywalker, which he played, as it did not correspond to his personal background story, which he had invented himself in the almost 40 years since The Return of the Jedi . However, working with Rian Johnson and the final film convinced him. His original doubts were wrong and the compulsion to leave one's comfort zone was a positive experience in order not to experience the same stories in the Star Wars universe, as Hamill admitted. The Last Jedi turned out to be a great film. The Salar de Uyuni salt flat in Bolivia served as the setting for the final battle on Crait . The film was shot there in July 2016. The last filming took place on July 22nd.

As with the predecessor, the shooting was characterized by extreme secrecy. For example, Benicio del Toro received a script that was protected with a code. In addition, most of the actors wore long black robes outside of the closed sets to hide their costumes, hairstyles and sometimes even the actors themselves while they were being driven back and forth between the sets. In Dubrovnik, drones were even supposed to be used, which were allowed to take other drones and flying objects from the sky that wanted to take aerial photos of the filming. As in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and The Return of the Jedi (1983), the character Yoda was depicted as a doll. Frank Oz steered it and gave it his voice again; the doll used was made according to the plans of the one originally used. In order to keep Frank Oz's involvement and Yoda's appearance a secret until the premiere of the film, his name was removed from all official press releases and marketing appearances and never mentioned. Frank Oz was also only allowed to eat in his own offices, but not in public restaurants nearby, before driving to Pinewood Studios, where his scenes were filmed. Personal meetings with Mark Hamill were also carried out in the strictest of secrecy.

Post production

Work on film editing began on August 25, 2016. Johnson's first film version was, according to his own statements, more than three hours long, which is why some complete scenes had to be removed. When asked if there would be an art director's cut at a later date , Johnson assured them that the theatrical version was the best version of The Last Jedi . At the time of publication, The Last Jedi is the longest-running Star Wars film.

Carrie Fisher, longtime actress of Leia Organa, died in December 2016 as a result of a serious heart attack . Her appearance in The Last Jedi was her penultimate film role. The filming of The Last Jedi had already been completed so far that Leia's role in the film did not have to undergo any changes and she could perform as originally planned. Even if her scenes had already been completely filmed, she was no longer available for the mandatory ADR . This entailed time-consuming work by the sound editors . The film is dedicated to her in the credits " In Loving Memory of Our Princess - Carrie Fisher " (in German "In loving memory of our princess"). As in The Force Awakens, her daughter Billie Lourd is part of the film as an actress.

On September 22nd, just under 12 weeks before regular theatrical release, Johnson announced that post-production was fully completed.

Film music

On August 13, 2016, John Williams confirmed that he had accepted an invitation from Kathleen Kennedy to also contribute the film music for the eighth episode. The multiple Oscar winner had already composed the music for the seven Star Wars episodes. The recordings began in December 2016 and continued over several months until May 2017 in close cooperation to develop the film. It was recorded by members of the Los Angeles Freelance Orchestra, and the vocal parts were sung by members of the Los Angeles Master Chorale. The film recordings were directed by John Williams and William Ross .

The 20-track recording was released on December 15, 2017 under the name Star Wars: The Last Jedi (original film soundtrack) and is 77 minutes long. Both well-known motifs are developed further and completely new ones are introduced, so that John Williams remains true to his style of leitmotifs . Well-known motifs include the Star Wars main theme, which is used at the beginning of the film, the power theme, as well as the themes Reys, the Millennium Falcon, Ahch-Tos, the resistance, Kylo Rens, Yodas, the rebellion, Han and Leias , as well as the final theme, which, as in all Star Wars films before, is played at the end of the film and at the beginning of the credits. Well-known motifs can also be heard in the Throne Room Snokes. The melodies of the deep male voices are strongly reminiscent of the theme of the Emperor in Return of the Jedi .

marketing

The first effective publicity announcement for The Last Jedi came about two months after the start of the predecessor The Force Awakens . In the almost 30-second video published on February 15, 2016, the beginning of the production of the film is announced and the first, short excerpts from it are shown. On January 23, 2017 the title of the episode was announced as The Last Jedi , the official German translation The Last Jedi followed on February 17, 2017. The actual marketing began about ten months before the release of the film, after the application of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story , the previously released first film outside of the actual saga, was over. As part of the Star Wars Celebration 2017, the largest Star Wars fair in the world, a lot of information about the film was revealed. The first teaser, unveiled by director Rian Johnson on April 14, 2017, achieved the greatest reach and was shown to hundreds of fans, then published on the Internet and clicked millions of times. At the same time, the first movie poster for the film was released, which shows the three main characters Luke Skywalker, Kylo Ren and Rey. As part of the D23 Expo, a video was shown that provides a look behind the scenes of The Last Jedi . The first detailed trailer followed on October 9, 2017 and for the first time gave a deeper insight into the film and the expected plot. In addition, the final film poster was published, which was then used in various variations for advertising purposes of all kinds. At the same time, international ticket sales began when the trailer was released. This was followed by 15 to 45 second long spots that were broadcast from November 1, 2017.

The Expedition 54 team watches The Last Jedi in the Harmony module of the International Space Station (ISS).

The film was particularly advertised in the months and weeks before the film was released. Rian Johnson and the most famous actors in the film attended numerous events organized by American and international media. These included appearances on the most popular American entertainment programs broadcast internationally, such as Jimmy Kimmel Live! , Conan , The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show . In the German-speaking countries, interviews, mainly with Mark Hamill, the Golden Camera , the Stern and the Frankfurter Allgemeine, were published. Major US newspapers and magazines published some exclusive information about the film as part of their marketing, for example in editorials in their editions, which were very popular among fans thanks to various covers. Major articles have been published by Entertainment Weekly , Vanity Fair , TIME , Rolling Stone, and the New York Times , for example .

The merchandising for the last Jedi launched on 1 September 2017 is advertised for several years as "Force Friday". Numerous books, short stories, comics, action figures, toys and more that revolved around the film and its characters and locations were distributed in the coming months.

In the video game Star Wars: Battlefront II , an expansion for The Last Jedi was released on December 13, 2017 , which added characters and locations from the film to the game.

synchronization

As in previous Star Wars films, the German dubbing was done by Film- & Fernseh-Synchron GmbH in Berlin. Björn Schalla wrote and directed the dialogue . The film received mostly positive reviews from critics. The reactions of the audience, however, were more mixed.

On Spiegel Online, Hannah Pilarczyk expressly praises the work of the director, whose “closeness to his characters, his feeling for their needs” make the film “such a triumph”. The last Jedi is therefore not only the longest film in the Star Wars series, but also "the richest". In the opinion of Johannes Spengler from kino.de , Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a "masterpiece" and better than its predecessor, as director "Johnson finally gives priority to the human again instead of focusing on silly power esotericism and space battles" . The news magazine Focus criticized that it took too long to get the film going, and that the final theatrical version was "still at least half an hour too long and sometimes seems tough." In addition, "many dramatic scenes failed to have their effect" and the "largely silly humor often comes in inappropriate places".

According to Martin Schwickert from Augsburger Allgemeine , the film cuts “between ballistic skirmishes, undercover missions, self-discovery processes and spiritual battles” and “drives the characters into their own contradictions with Shakespeare's force”. In the daily newspaper Die Welt, editor-in-chief Peter Huth concludes that the film is “the most unsuccessful, greatest film in the series. A masterpiece of redundancies, an endless string of quotes from the previous parts, it's incredibly fast and infinitely lame, the new characters develop and behave exactly like the old ones, same conflicts, same weapons, same solutions ”, one Criticism, which the author Juliane Liebert also addresses in the Süddeutsche Zeitung : "The same constellations are always repeated with a generation gap."

Mathias Ottmann criticizes in lifestyle magazine GQ that the film feels “incredibly long and repetitive. When the first euphoria has evaporated after about an hour, when the film keeps turning the same loops, then a bit of the fun is lost. ”In addition, the director did not“ get the right moment to end his film . ”Matthias Dammes from the game magazine PC Games “ didn't find it easy to classify what was seen ”due to the length of the film and the dense plot, even if the“ strip in the middle sags a little. ”Nevertheless, the film was“ definitely one of the better ” Star Wars Films ”. The editors of the cinema magazine Cinema drew the conclusion: "Perfectly animated star adventure that comes up with powerful battles, furious lightsaber duels and surprising twists, but also with some dramatic weaknesses and lengths."

Carsten Baumgardt of the film magazine Filmstarts says in his review that “Rian Johnson [...] with the fantasy spectacle The Last Jedi [delivers] a strong middle section of the third trilogy, which lives mainly from the return of Mark Hamill as the legendary Luke Skywalker . Together with Daisy Ridley's energetic Rey, he whitewashed some weaker elements in the other storylines. "

An often-mentioned shortcoming of the film is the storyline about Finn and Rose. Although this is told extensively long and extensively, it has little influence on the plot: Neither the plan to switch off the sensors is implemented, nor is the outcome of the Influential people introduced the action (the fleeing transporters are fired only after the betrayal of the "DJs", but this has no real influence on the further course of events). Instead, the plan of withdrawal, as decided at the beginning, will be carried out. Behind the scene is “well-packaged criticism of society and capitalism by screenwriter and director Rian Johnson. […] The belief in change prevails from below and with the oppressed, ”says Ludwig Jovanovic from RP Online , who also praises the possible end with a stable boy who has power and looks hopefully at the stars.

Anna Smith praised the portrayal of complex female roles and dialogue in The Guardian .

Gross profit

Production costs of $ 200–250 million are offset by box office revenues of $ 1.332 billion worldwide. Without taking inflation into account (nominally), the film is in 14th place in the list of the world's most successful films of all time (as of August 8, 2020). The Last Jedi is the most successful film of 2017 and the second most successful film in the Star Wars film series after The Force Awakens, which at $ 2.068 billion is the fourth most financially successful film of all time.

It was also the top-grossing film of 2017 in the United States and Canada, and hit the best opening weekend of the year with $ 220 million on the opening weekend (third-best ever after The Force Awakens and Avengers: Infinity War ). Overall, the film grossed $ 620 million in the US and Canada alone. The Last Jedi is currently ranked ninth of the most successful films there ever.

In Germany, The Last Jedi achieved  the second best starting weekend of all time (after The Awakening of Power ) and the third best starting week ever (after The Awakening of Power and Fack Ju Göthe 3 ) in terms of  sales (with almost 20 million euros ). It grossed a total of almost 69.4 million euros and attracted over 5.8 million visitors to German cinemas. In terms of sales in Germany, it is the most successful film of 2017 and the ninth most successful ever.

The net profit from the movie theater alone was about 417 million US dollars for the lead studio Disney .

Cameo appearances

In the course of the film, there are numerous cameo appearances by Star Wars veterans or other well-known personalities, including Warwick Davis , who has appeared in numerous Star Wars films and other adaptations since The Return of the Jedi , Justin Theroux as Gambler in Canto Bight with Lily Cole accompanying him. Director Rian Johnson also makes an unrecognizable appearance. His hand can be seen as the hand of Luke Skywalker for a few seconds when he hands over Han Solo's dice from the Millennium Falcon to Leia. In addition to his role as Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill made a brief appearance as Dobbu Scay in the casino. Hamill's three children, Nathan, Griffin and Chelsea Hamill, each appear as Resistance soldiers. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (as Slovenian Lo, who alerted the Canto Bight police to the shuttle illegally parked by Rose and Finn and thus ensures their arrest and prosecution) and Noah Segan (X-wing pilot) are through their roles At the time of publication, the only two actors to star in all of director Rian Johnson's films ( Brick , Looper , Brothers Bloom , The Last Jedi ). Prince William , Prince Harry , Tom Hardy and Gary Barlow made appearances as stormtroopers. Gary, the dog of the late Carrie Fisher (Leia), who can be seen briefly in the Canto Bight casino, also has a very special cameo. Also shown briefly is Gareth Edwards , director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story , as a soldier of the resistance awaiting the imminent attack of the First Order on Crait. This is thanks to Rian Johnson, who in turn made a brief appearance as an Imperial officer on board the Death Star in Rogue One , a scene that was seen in an almost identical manner in the first Star Wars film .

continuation

The new Star Wars trilogy was concluded with the ninth episode, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , in which JJ Abrams re-directed the same as for The Force Awakens. Filming began in August 2018 and was released in December 2019.
