Neal Scanlan

Neal Scanlan (* 1961 in Manchester ) is a British make- up artist and special effects artist .

Life

Scanlan began his career in 1981 as a stop-motion animator at the British animation studio Cosgrove Hall Films in Manchester , where he worked on The Wind in the Willows , which appeared in 1983 . From 1984 he worked in London on the Disney production Oz - Eine fantastische Welt . Subsequently, he was chief designer of the mechanical effects for the two Oscar-nominated comedy The Little Horror Shop by Frank Oz . Scanlan was one of the co-founders of the Jim Henson Creature Shop alongside the namesake Jim Henson . For his special effects for A Pig Called Babe , he received the 1996 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects .

He then founded his own effects studio in 1996, the first big project of which was the sequel Piggy Babe in the Big City . Scanlan closed his studio in 2011 and was working on Prometheus - Dark Characters in Hollywood . He was then hired for the Star Wars film series as head of special effects in the Special Creature Effects division . In 2016 he was nominated for a second Oscar for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He did so again in 2018 and 2019 for his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story , and received his third and fourth Oscar nominations.
