The Shrine Auditorium , also known as Al Malaikah Temple known in the district of University Park in Los Angeles , California is a large Grade II listed building event and a regional center of the Shriners , a Masonic organization. Like all Shriner buildings, it stands out for its oriental architectural design.

history

The current Shrine Auditorium was built in 1925/1926 and replaced the Shriner Al-Malaikah Temple, which was built in 1906 and destroyed by a major fire on January 11, 1920. The new auditorium was designed by the San Francisco-based theater architect G. Albert Lansburgh, with the assistance of local architects John C. Austin and AM Edelman.

On April 2, 1987, the Shrine Auditorium was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a monument . In 2002 the building was completely renovated for 15 million US dollars , mainly with regard to the stage technology, lighting, seating and other technical matters. Nothing has been changed in the landmark “Moorish” character of the building.

The Shrine Auditorium now holds approximately 6300 visitors compared to 6700 previously.

The Shrine Auditorium has hosted several Oscar , Grammy and Emmy awards ceremonies , as well as major sporting events and concerts. An exhibition and congress center is connected to the Shrine Auditorium.
