Lawrence "Larry" Kasdan (born January 14, 1949 in Miami ) is an American director and screenwriter .

Life

Lawrence "Larry" Kasdan was born on January 14, 1949 in Miami Beach , Florida to Clarence Norman Kasdan and his wife Sylvia Sarah Kasdan (née Landau). Larry then grew up with his brother Mark, who later also worked as a screenwriter and producer, in various small towns in the US state of West Virginia . According to his own statement, Kasdan was teased by his friends because of his Jewish ancestry. In 1971 Kasdan married the writer Meg Goldman . The two sons Jake and Jon emerged from the marriage, who also work as scriptwriters, directors and producers in the film business.

Lawrence Kasdan first received his Master of Arts (MA) from the University of Michigan to become a teacher. In the absence of employment, he became a copywriter and even won the prestigious Clio Award . He began writing screenplays when he moved to Los Angeles . In 1976 he was able to bring Bodyguard to the man, but it was only realized in 1992 with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston in the leading roles. Originally, Steve McQueen was slated to play Kevin Costner .

Kasdan's script for Two Like A Cat and a Mouse caught the attention of Steven Spielberg . Spielberg then introduced Kasdan to George Lucas , who then hired him to write the script for Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Lost Ark . After Leigh Brackett , who had written the first draft for The Empire Strikes Back , died in 1978, Lucas hired Kasdan to complete the script. Kasdan was also involved as a screenwriter on the Star Wars sequel Return of the Jedi (1983). More than 30 years later, Kasdan wrote the script for Star Wars: The Force Awakens . He also worked as an author on Solo: A Star Wars Story , which appeared in 2018.

In 1981 he made his debut as a director with the film Hot Blood - Cold Blood . His other films as a director include works as diverse as the Western Silverado (1985), the comedy I Love You To Death (1990) and the romantic comedy French Kiss (1995) with Meg Ryan .

In addition, he also appeared as an actor, including as Dr. Green in Getting Better (1997) with Jack Nicholson .
