I Love You to Death is an American comedy film directed by Lawrence Kasdan from the year 1990 to kill in which it comes to the unsuccessful attempts of an unfaithful husband.
action
The pizza maker Joey Boca doesn't take marital fidelity that seriously. His wife Rosalie is not at all enthusiastic about it. Because their Catholic upbringing does not permit a divorce, other measures are required. Encouraged by her resolute mother and the pizza delivery boy and house friend Devo, she decides to promote the notoriously unfaithful husband from life to death, which in practice turns out to be extremely difficult.
At first, neither a hired killer with a baseball bat nor a car bomb from Rosalie's mother show the desired result. Therefore Rosalie and her mother cook a well-seasoned spaghetti sauce with two glasses of sleeping pills for Joey, but Joey is tough and only dozes off after several servings. To be sure, they call Devo, who is in love with Rosalie. He is supposed to finish off Joey with a pistol, hits him in the back of the head, but Joey survives.
Therefore Devo asks the two supposed professional killers Harlan and Marlon for help. Both are high and eventually shoot Joey's heart. The blood stains on his shirt suggest that the projectile has come out on the back. It then seems clear that he's dead, and Rosalie realizes what they did and prays that Joey may still be alive, whereupon he appears behind her. Obviously, he didn't notice anything about the attempted murder, even though he had previously complained of stomach aches and headaches.
Two police officers, regulars at Joey's Pizza, finally get a tip and want to check on Joey. They spot the gunshot wounds and call an ambulance. Joey survives because the sleeping pills stopped his bleeding. Both Rosalie and her mother undertake the attempted murders. Joey realizes that his behavior was wrong and wants to improve. He breaks up with his lover at the bedside and finally gets Rosalie, her mother, Harlan and Marlon out of prison by paying the bail. He wants to continue living with Rosalie - and promises to remain loyal to her in the future.
background
The plot of this film goes back to an actual event: the pizza maker Tony Toto survived several assassinations of his wife Frances in 1983. After he bailed her out of prison and forgave her, they both continued their marriage.
Reviews
I love you to death triggered a mixed or inconsistent response from the film review. In numerous cases it has been critically noted that overall it is a rather mediocre comedy. On the other hand, there was broad agreement regarding the remarkable performance of the actors. This is especially true for Hurt and Reeves, who would have mastered their roles as stoned killers who were completely overwhelmed with contract killing and had great comedic talent.
"Staged without a concept, just as clumsy as boring comedy."
