action

Emmett is on his way to Turley, where he wants to meet with his brother and then travel to California via Silverado . During a rest, he is attacked by three gunslingers , but he is the better shot. On his onward journey in the desert he reads the paden, which has been robbed down to his underwear, and saves him from dying of thirst. Both ride on to Turley together, where they witness how the Black Mark is driven out of town by Sheriff John Langston because of his skin color.

But in Turley, Jake, Emmett's brother, is in jail waiting for the rope because, as Jake claims, he shot a man in self-defense. Emmett and Paden free him and flee from the sheriff and his men. When this threatens to catch up with them, Mal comes to their aid under the protection of a rock formation. From now on the four men ride together - each of them a true marksman with initially unclear origins and history and each with his own little peculiarity.

On the way to Silverado they meet a group of settlers who have had their money stolen. You decide to find the chest and bring it back. One of the settlers accompanies them to safety. In a canyon they find the band of robbers and use a trick to get hold of the money. However, the settler is shot.

They bring the chest back to the trek and lead it to Silverado. On the way there they split up: Mal to ride to his parents' farm, Emmett and his brother to say goodbye to their family at home before continuing on to California.

Only Paden stays with the trek and leads him to Silverado, where the rancher and landowner McKendrick and his henchmen make life difficult for new settlers and also try to force out rightful landowners like Mal's father. McKendrick takes the law into his own hands and knows Sheriff Cobb and his deputies, all of Paden's former companions, on his side. When Emmett and Jake come into town, the mood heats up because, it turns out, Emmett shot McKendrick's father in self-defense years ago and spent a long time in jail. Paden initially stays out of the argument and becomes friends with Stella, who runs the saloon, which in turn belongs to Sheriff Cobb.

When McKendrick had Mal's father killed out of greed and took revenge on Emmett's family, the situation escalated. Emmett's brother-in-law is shot, his nephew kidnapped and the family home burned down. When Sheriff Cobb then gives Paden to understand that he shouldn't help his friends, and threatens that Stella might suffer, Paden takes a stand against Cobb. Together, the friends free the kidnapped boy and put McKendrick and his henchmen on the job. Finally, Paden puts Cobb in the showdown , shoots him in a duel and ends up being sheriff himself.

production

The film was shot in a total of 96 days over the winter from Thanksgiving to mid-March. For the filming locations, Mark Kasdan explored Arizona , New Mexico and Utah, among others , and decided in favor of New Mexico because of the oncoming winter. Portions were recorded in the area of the Ghost Ranch, where painter Georgia O'Keeffe loved to paint. In Santa Fe also a western town setting was built. The last recordings were made near San Fernando Valley . The entire set was reused and destroyed in the 1999 film Wild Wild West , in which Kevin Kline also starred.

Arvo Ojala was the gun advisor and quick draw artist and trained all actors in gun use.

reception

The US premiere was in July 1985, in Germany in January 1986. The film grossed a total of 32,192,570 dollars.

Silverado was in theaters around the same time as Pale Rider starring and directed by Clint Eastwood . Both ensured a renaissance of western films.

"A fast-paced comedy that could be deadly serious in the right places and offered western fans pretty much everything that they had missed in recent years."

- Thomas Jeier: The western film

“Overly academic attempt to revive the Western. The story of a pair of brothers and their friends in the fight against a corrupt sheriff is told in a complicated and lengthy manner. The captivating individual fates such as that of a black man and his sister who has become a prostitute and the impressive landscape panoramas suffer from this. "
